imagine you are marching through a foggy, claustrophobic valley in the early morning hundreds of miles from home in some cold, wet, hilly & forested foreign & alien land after being away for months. now imagine you hear a dozen of these going off in the distance on either side. now imagine the voices of countless screaming warriors and clashing shields & weaponry drowning it all out... seeming to come from everywhere around, out in the mist. imagine your legion officer barking orders to form up for battle, fear is HIS voice, as the thunder of a thousand running feet drowns out all other sounds... and then they are upon you, wide-eyed, pale men painted blue, clothed as the day they were born, yelling battle cries & animalistic shrieks and charging you with not a hint of fear or hesitation in their eyes just awesome

My favorite thing to think about is not just that there’d be a million of these but imagine it’s your first war, they tell you when you start hearing the trumpets don’t be scared. It begins with just one, and grows to hundreds, maybe thousands. You think at first “oh that’s not so bad” and as the number grow all thoughts become fear of just how many of these fuckers are out there. There comes a point where you lose count how many there are and just quake. Your brothers try to calm you by strengthening their resolve but the sound deafens you, and without warning and without hearing it, you’re attacked from behind by thousands of fuckin naked psycho dudes with spears. Gaul was somethin else.

The majority of Celtic tribes were in England, although of course there were Celtic tribes throughout the rest of the British isles also.(England being the larger mass of country) The inhabitants of Gaul were Celts and the Irish used to do a lot of trade with them. Then the Romans invaded and tried to make Gaul and Britain one huge Roman empire, ( don't forget that there was no water between Gaul and Britain or Ireland and Britain back then, there was a land bridge and the same goes for under the English channel, you could have walked to Belgium at one point) in Gaul there was a Celtic tribe called the Parisii whom the Romans could not move (this is how Paris got its name) from the Parisii tribe who originated from Yorkshire in England. the rest of the Celts were forced into what is now called Britanny , the word Britanny is latin meaning ''little Britain'' apposed to Britannia which in latin means ''Greater Britain''. Then the Franks invaded Gaul, they were a Germanic people, and then Gaul became known as Francia, a latin word meaning ''the land of the franks''. although the Celts in the British isles were primarily a peaceful friendly and welcoming people, you did have your feuds between tribes and many were great warriors and some were mercenaries, some even fought for the Romans, which was a huge mistake on the romans part (lookup the crossrail skulls) and because they were mercenaries and warriors they loved nothing more than to travel and fight. the Celts from the British isles fought the Romans in Italy and went as far as Egypt and met with Alexander the great. The Celts did not come to Britain, it was the Celts from Britain that went to other countries and took their ways with them. The Romans even copied for their own use Celtic helmets like the coolus helmet and the montefortino helmet, also the galea, roman centurion helmet was inspired and designed from the celts. along with the galea short sword etc...linking shields was a Celtic thing also that the romans learnt from their celtic mercenaries. this is just a very, very small example believe me. another thing that I must say because it does wind me up, THE VIKINGS DID NOT WEAR HORNED HELMETS, it was the Celts from Britain.

I can imagine how terrifying this would be. Imagine you’re a Roman soldier on a campaign in Gaul. You set up camp for the night. Then, somewhere in the darkness, you hear a faint sound that gradually gets louder. It is a carynx. Then more of them start playing. You wake up out of your sleep in a cold sweat and grab your sword. The sounds get louder and louder and louder. Then they stop. This is no consolation because you know the enemy is close. You and your fellow soldiers grab weapons and hastily put on armor. Then, without any warning, screaming Gauls attack your camp!
@DderwenWyllt

I like to imagine some skilled Brythonic musicians could hit a note that would make the Roman shields resonate, just imagine a legion marching through the forest and a sound echoes through the valley, a sound of creaking and moaning like the very forest is rising up, then suddenly each soldier's shield starts to shiver, like the shields themselves feel terror at the oncoming battle. I know it's almost impossible since they were mostly wood, but damn that scene would make good cinema.

Sure it wasnt played like this. Probably more just blared out loudly and monotonously. Enough to strike fear into enemy hearts though! The Zulu did the same with the "bull-roarer", a simple block of wood with a hole in it, whirled around on a long length of rawhide rope which produced a deep, roaring sound. Several together would have been quite intimidating...

Makes a certain Roman defeat in a German forest alot more interesting. Not one historian has thaught that it can used to send messages in battle or village to village not just music but a phone as well. That is why it's such a tall instrument sound travels further it can also be seen clearly in battle. Think outside the box did boudica use it to controll the thousands to rise against the Romans. Usefull if the battle feild is miles long and comunication is key

You know those weird like "Scary" sounds on youtube, but when you listen to them they arn't scary? Well think of it this way, the Carnyx Was a Gallic War Horn, and it sounds cool and Jazzy behind a screen but, imagine your a Principe, Your Walking through a Forest in Northern Gaul, everything is good, Your talking too your friend Lantigos From the next Town Over, And then Boom, Just a A Deafening Sound of a Carnyx Breaks the Air, and its not just one, two, No its Multiple, And it doesn't make one single sound, multiple sounds are just going on at once, its hard to even really comprehend whats going on at this point because all you can here is what is pretty much a Terrifying Trumpet, and there isn't visibly anyone to see anywhere, its Just A Deafening sound From out of nowhere, and it feels out of nowhere. Then it stops, and the Silence is almost horrifying in its self because all you've heard for the past 2 minutes was a pretty much Large Upright trumpet blaring from out of nowhere. But then the sound starts again but closer, Now you can visibly see the Guals in there trees, but they're still shrouded in Mystery. Then That Carnyx Blares Again, And All you see in your final moments is just a buncha Gauls, Who look nothing like the Shirtless Barbarians they where depicted as in Rome, Charging at you in Actual Armour, And before you or your whole Cohort can even prepare you on the Ground dead. So Yeah i Just made and wasted my time for this Because well, i hate when people say "Well, This sounds doesn't scare me." When they're behind a screen eating Hot Cheetos.
