I did not know about this feature in DaVinci Resolve as I don't use DaVinci Resolve for my audio recording, but it's good to know, although I think Blackmagic should change this so that you can just have a button to click that changes the meters or right click to change them instead of having to go into the settings to change it and then remembering to change it back afterwards.

I didn't know you could adjust the audio input like this in resolve. I know from playing guitar that you have an input signal that you can adjust in various locations along the signal chain. Every output becomes a new input for the next device in the chain. Order matters, and sometimes less is more. If you have a clipping input signal, there's not much you can do to fix that in post. Too low of an input may cause static trying to boost it to acceptable levels on the output. Would have been nice if Resolve just had a little toggle button to switch between input and output audio levels right on the mixer. We should really view everything as a signal chain. If your operating system (or audio interface) setting is not optimal, the signal received by resolve will also not be optimal. It becomes quite complicated when you think about it, but fortunately we have guys like you who dig up all these neat tips and tricks we don't know of... Thanks for yet another cool tip...

Using analogies... A bucket feeds a fluid into a trough that supplies a drinking tub. The tap that feeds the fluid into the bucket is the gain. The tap that controls the flow of fluid from the bucket to the trough (that channels the fluid into the drinking tub) is the Trim. The Direct Output control (I've never used this one so am not certain this is correct but used the echo/eq direct o/p as a guide) the speed at which the bucket is emptied if it needs to be drained. Good tutorial.

Good tip. I knew the concepts about pre and post-fader but didn't know how to do it in DR. I'm transitioning from Premiere/Audition. It would be great if Fairlight had a PFL button on each track so you didn't have to go into global settings to make that change. Maybe in the next version.

Just started using Resolve and this will be helpful as I do movie riffing/funny commentary and was planning to record my next project in Resolve. Audacity is nice for open source but it doesn't have the video playback I really need to sync to the video. This and using side chain compression will go a long way in making everything sound good. I'm quite impressed with what you can do with Resolve in just the free version.
@SennaCrow
@SennaCrow Год назад

@@SennaCrow I use OBS for streaming. If I'm doing an improv riff where mistakes don't matter because improv, I use that. Got several improv riffs on my channel that I did in OBS. For something scripted, which this project is, Resolve is great because I can jump to specific places in the video, and I can do multiple takes and keep what works on the timeline. So I can use both depending on the project. Glad I found this because I used to use Premiere Elements and this is more robust and free.

And I have a Mac Studio with alots of memory both for graphics card and internal, not basic one. I think Black Magic needs to improve this for DVR. Interesting that Fairlight works like that. If I was designing the UI - I think that I would have had a level indicator for anything that the record button is used to show input level and just keep everything else. the way it was. I don't think I have ever not seen old analogue mixers where the input wasn't showing a level. Seems illogical to me for it to work the way you are showing - Resolve should include input levels on a future update. Good job explaining it Jason. I like how you have developed in your approach to tutorials.
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski Год назад
Thanks Jim, I appreciate hearing our thoughts. It would be nice if they had an easier to find button or meter for anything that is pre-fader. In theory, if you have the VO Track track soloed and the fader set to unity, you should see the input levels the same as the 'pre-fader' levels. On the digital mixers I use for live music, you need to solo a track to see an individual track's input levels and be able to properly set gain levels. BMD is always making things better and better for us, we will see if this gets better down the road. Thanks for checking out the video!
@RobKristjansson

Great video as always, Jason! Quick question! If I keep my track faders at unity while recording, the meters should show me the same level as if I set them at pre-fader, right?
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski Год назад
Yes, if the fader for the track is set at unity, it should show you the correct levels. I think the tricky part is that people may think they should just adjust the fader and that is all they need to do versus actually looking at the signal pre-fader

I am breaking down workflow order as well as system settings so I can create narrator presets within DaVinci. I am hoping not to spend a dime in external plugins. It's been very difficult because there is a huge gap in Davinci Resolve videos directed at narrators, but I have been finding a few things at a time that can pull stuff together. Got a long way to go on getting it all orderly, sensical, and perfected. It's really, really hard when just three weeks ago I barely knew a thing about audio engineering or mastering, etc. 😁 The only thing I know for ABSOLUTE sure, is that I do not want to use AUDACITY. I would have liked to see a diagram with the mic on the left and a series of function boxes as the audio is processed. Then, it would be easy to show where the meter display was coming from, depending on pre-fader, etc. setting. And where does the Trim audio come from on that type of diagram? This is why I took an immediate dislike to Fairlight. I don't use it at all. I'm no guru but I did work the board in a professional studio when I needed voice talent to record narrations for our video projects, mix in camera video and music track; sometimes sound effects as well. There are things that are pretty standard and therefore expected at that level so when I saw the complication of Fairlight I figured it's got all of that. But it's a different animal. e.g. having that hidden checkbox outside the Fairlight page is BS.

@@charlieross-BRM ok, I understand now you don’t use Fairlight that much, fair enough. My comment about the value of a flow diagram still stands. I am going to do some voice over for a documentary. Earlier today I watched a video about the Patch function used to connect a source (microphone input) to an audio track. I wish you had mentioned this too. Your description would have been much clearer if you used a diagram to show the mic connected to a fader connected to an audio track (in Resolve, of course). Then it would be easy to understand pre- and post- fader measurement points. Your description of Trim control was unclear to me. Unclear in the extreme. You mentioned “Disc” and I can’t remember anybody else using that terminology. In my imaginary block diagram, post-fader audio goes to a voiceover track which I presume is recorded on disk. So, where does Trim enter the picture? You didn’t identify the point at which it operates (post-fader, presumably), and its function is a mystery. Please explain. Still, I had missed the toggle for measuring at the input to the fader, so thanks. Would be nice if this was assignable to a track. Maybe someday. Still, you did provide some valuable advice, for which I thank you.

I did not hear why pre fader is better.

Because it gives you actual input levels regardless of where the fader is positioned.

@JasonYadlovski Thank you for the reply. What I still don't get is why does it matter. What is the benefit because the output is what people hear. I don't see what additional control I have, and no quality difference was shown.

Pre-fader is only valuable when you are recording into davinci resolve directly - like a voice over. It's to make sure you microphone levels are sufficient as you are recording. After recording, you'd want to turn that off and go about editing the audio as normal.

Since my Yeti Nano has no volume control, it wouldn't be useful to me, but I can see how it could to others. Thank you! @@JasonYadlovski
