What a year! And can it really be a year already? Your coverage was amazing - you should all be so proud. Art's photography was some of the best footage I have ever seen of an eruption and put the broadcast media to shame. And it was Valur's fizzing excitement at being able to get so close to the eruption (but not walking on the lava!) was positively infectious. Thousands of people wanted to be there to share the joy, terror and awe of watching a volcano erupt. I'm still convinced it's no coincidence that the eruption stopped within minutes of me landing in Iceland last September - sorry guys...
I came across the channel, by accident. Yes. The volcano. I am still a happy subscriber and watch most videos. I love the walking newscast with Polly. Please keep the format. It really is a great way of humanizing news, instead of just reporting it. Great work by a great team. Thanks to the team behind the scenes, as well. For the unseen work they do.
Started watching RVK newscasts when I saw a report of 20,000 earth tremors in the Reykjavic and Gelding........ area. What! thinks ignorant me. Valur was walking through an area where it was thought an eruption would occur, as I recall. As far as I can count, I've watched every newscast since and will continue to do so even without volcano. The magnificent camera work by Art, capturing the terrifying, mesmerising beauty of this long eruption was glorious. Valur"s lively, intelligent commentary was a joy to the ear. Still is. Valur and Josie, congratulations on this presentation. Particularly fine and a perfect format. Enjoyed it hugely. Thanks to the whole Grapevine team - that includes Polly. Bless you for bringing us this latest gem. Oh, by the way, please don't either of you lose your lovely accents.
Valur and Josie Anne, this is (really, really) great. The review is excellent and personal. The set-up for the interview is perfect and friendly. You are correct that your reporting of the volcano was the spark that made your RU-vid channel go exponential and thanks to RU-vid's algorithm your channel pop-up on my home screen. I only wish I could be there in person to shake your hand and congratulate you and your team...well done you.
I remember having the live cams on nearly 24/7, watching every one of your newscasts for updates just waiting for the eruption. Seeing that red glow on the live cams just filled me with so much excitement to see the next newscast. To see a 'new' volcano be born and grow over live cams and newscast was amazing. Thank you for all the coverage!
But Valur, the accent is part of the attraction. We who yearn for travelling to Iceland enjoy seeing and hearing everything that is Icelandic. So walking around was a splendid idea - and to involve Polly was just brilliant. 👍
I found the first videos of volcano on March 20th and almost daily for hours on end I was mesmerized by the spectacular for the next 6 to 7 months. Watching it change daily getting invested in the community of viewers that watched with me. It was so calming that I wish we had something like it now. I missed that time of my life. You were a part of it. Along with the others that kept us informed.
I love this! It was so neat to go back and watch some of the old clips from when I really start following the Reykjavik Grapevine! And the excitement of wondering when and how the magma was going to erupt! Can't wait for the next episode!

Brilliant! We've been watching, subscribed & placed orders all thru Covid, for chocs/books/accessories, allsorts, trying to help RGV & at the same time pace things so we got new editions of the paper with each order, it was such a visual lifeline to beloved Iceland when we couldn't get there ourselves! It was amazing & brilliant how things took off for you when the rumblings started & then the eruption kicked off! But we've loved you all from the start (& the paper even longer than that ofc!) & all the extra brilliant sidelines as well, abandoned Iceland, saga stories, supernatural, perspective, roundabout (😉) etc, all the content is just so well done & welcome for all us Íslandsvinir! We've bumped into Valur & the adorable Pollý a couple of times in Rvk & it's always such a buzz, so friendly! And we love your accent Valur so don't stop, we could listen to you all day!

I remember watching “the man with the dog,” from before the volcano started. I showed it to my sister before this “new” thing (RU-vid), I’d found. As in this part, we stopped playing on phones and went out for the day. Thanks for all.

A few nights ago I watched Fire & Iceland on Amazon Prime. I highly recommend it. There were interviews with people associated with the six-month life of the volcano, including Valur, beautiful videos of the eruption and lava, and sadness at the end of it all. Thank you, Valur and Josie Ann, for doing part 1 here. Part 2 should be very satisfying.
Wow! Wonderful photos and lovely memories! I had never seen Natthagi and Geldingadalir before the eruption. They were absolutely breathtaking with all these patches of green and the gray sea in the distance! Thank you for sharing images and remembrances with us!
Wow - this is brilliant! I discovered your channel at the onset of the volcano. I've stayed for all the news, and enjoy the offerings from your store. After buying a tin of the wonderful incense last year, I would drape my mask over it, so when I wore it, that lovely smell was there. 😊 I'm really enjoying the backstory of before the volcano erupted, and I look forward to reliving the time of the eruption through your channel!
Can't wait for the next one. I was totally addicted to my laptop for six months looking to al the webcams and enjoying the Newscast when you and Art went to the volcano in al weather conditions. It was al so mesmerising. I was every time surprised that people could come so close to the volcano. I have watched from the start and could follow all new fissures. I look forward to part 2.

I was so lucky to be living in Iceland back then when it happened, so I witnessed all the eartquakes and the eruption itself. This video brings back a lot of good memories. I love Josie's smile and her warm and accommodating demeanor🤗, the accent is something I would love to hear in my house everyday . . so you're welcome Josie . . . 😘 umm . . . just needed to get that out there. Yes the little spurt that turned into 'Bob' was for me an introduction to volcanology and Iceland, it's ppl. its landscapes and it's mystical culture. Then Bob x 2 went ballistic and was soon replaced by many fissures, what a spectacle! . . . Then a real volcano appeared and by that time 3 valleys had been filled and a huge area was transformed by brimstone and rivers from hell, I was riveted for 6+ months and Covid for me didn't matter! Icelanders however were restrained in their response, they built a wall here and another there and said "yes you're a beast, but we will direct you!" and so it pretty much was . . . now what a lovely story for young Icelandic children and others to hear!

Luckily my family understands my obsession with Iceland. I'm still waiting to take my 10th trip to Iceland, really wish I could move there. Looking forward to Part 2!

Definitely a historic event, that was closely followed for such a long time. The changes to the entire area were impressive, and finally and fortunately relatively harmless. It could have been so much worse had it not finally died out before breaking through to coast or worse towards the towns.
You know, I would probably buy a compilation DVD of all the fantastic volcano-related newscasts that you produced for the duration. Maybe something to put together and sell in the shop? Especially the ones with drone footage. Every broadcast from the volcano was so much fun to watch (for those of us who could not visit for ourselves). Can't wait to see Part II of this mini documentary!

I love this channel, i think i been with you almost every episode since April/May 2021. Its been a daily thing to watch more or less, specially with news on volcano changes. And I’m still here too. I’m Swedish and have been dreaming of to visit Iceland, sooner or later. I like the casual walking with Polly, and sightseeing some parts of your country, mainly the volcano part, or parts of Reykjavik and its parks etc. And i always love the drone shoots. Fascinating to see what went on before the eruption. I only came on the scene within a day of the eruption. And you all handled it so well, I was hooked.

I thought you had been doing this for a long time, I didn't know you started it right before the volcano and that's what made your channel more famous! wow.. thats how I found you guys. by the way. I was following a Icelandic channel that was watching the earthquakes and waiting for the eruption and talking about where it may be erupt at and then after it all happend I saw your channel in my recomended list. Okay - so it's great to see Valur's doggie Polly featured. To give this documentary a bit more bite, it would be good to use the "dateline" titles (the ones that look like they are being typed out) and to have a trendline showing the # of subscribers to the channel plotted against calendar dates. We fans want to be amazed by statistics.
That was excellent! I first subscribed to the print edition of the Grapevine around 2004. I let the subscription expire a few years later when I found I could get most of the info on the Grapevine website. When Covid came along I subscribed again to do whatever I could to support The Grapevine because it had become my primary source of news and information concerning Iceland. I had other sources, like Iceland Review and news in English pages of Morgunblaðið and DV. But none covered the news as thoroughly or as timely as Grapevine. I was so happy when you started posting on RU-vid and amazed at how quickly you developed from simply a news and entertainment and arts magazine to an incredible source of not only those, but Icelandic history, folklore, sagas, language and pretty much everything else to do with Iceland! And here you are, exceeding my expectations again!
To be clear; Kellir is not a “volcano” per se, but it is the result of a single volcanic eruption, a Pleistocene fissure eruption that occurred under the multiple-kilometer-thick ice cap of the last Glacial Maximum. Similar to how volcanoes under Vatnajökull, etc erupt subglacial today and melt holes in the glacier, the fissure under Kellir melted a cavity within the thick ice cap, and this cavity was filled with lava, in the form of submarine pillow lavas in the subglacial lake that formed in this cavity, and hyaloclastite from interactions with lava and the water. When the ice melted and partially eroded this pile of lava that filled up a subglacial lake thousands of years ago, Kellir was left behind. This type of volcanic landform is called a “tuya”. Though in Iceland they call them “móberg”.
Like many others, I came for the volcano and stayed for the hardy news-dog and her faithful assistants. Mind you, more vulcanism would be fine as well...
My cildren still laugh at the fact that their Mom watched like bewitched the lifestream, and screamed about the eruptions :-D By the way, I reckon Valur´s accent sounds quite Scottish.
I can imagine that if you are there where 100's + e/quakes happen every day the anxiety and expectant tensions would build to a crescendo, you await and hope for a release. Does this remind you of any biological processes? It's the build up of expectations that make us more intent and that makes any climax all the more intense, sorry if this needs an X rating but actually I love the similarity between slow geology and the build up, this nervous excitement, expectation, experience and final satisfaction that ppl. have when they reach the conclusion. And then came Josie, and it starts all over again! 🤣
Have you watched the New Zealand Prime Minister who was doing a press conference when an earthquake hit, in May 2020. She was so ‘matter of fact’ about it.
Doc was ok. Would have liked to see more volcano footage...less chat. VALUR! What possessed you to wear that horrible hat.? That said...I have been a fan of this channel and especially Valur's onsite coverage of the volcano.
