You might have heard of the ongoing volcanic eruptions near Grindavík, Iceland. You might not have heard that it's hard to monitor a volcano in the dark. We'll talk about why an Icelandic winter is the worst time for monitoring equipment like DOAS, InSAR, and GPS.

8:22 Grindavik was evacuated already in November and the evacuation has since turned permanent. As a result, Iceland has an acute and serious housing shortage - one percent of Icelanders has to find or build a new home now. This is partly because repeated volcanic eruptions are the new normal for a foreseeable future and partly because nobody can say with sufficient certainty, after all the earthquakes, where there are caverns under Grindavik, which could turn into sinkholes. One worker was already lost - he was never found, as it turned out that there was a whole river running underground through the town that nobody had known about.

ive seen upclose now over 10 eruptions here in iceland, more than once been less than 5km away from the start of the eruption when it blew, nature is scary but so beautiful, the force of nature is awesome in the truest meaning of the word

Great to see Shawn Willsey on this video. He is a great teacher of geology. His explanation about why InSAR can’t measure the volcanic deformation in the snow is not quite correct. InSAR requires that the surface reflect radar in the same way on the two dates of images, and the snow causes the measurement to lose coherence due to the surface changes.

Iceland is just about as mythically awesome a place as Australia... Four hours of sunlight in winter, and presumably something like four hours of night in high summer - plus beaches with ice like diamonds, SEVERAL incredible volcanoes, and the some of the best architecture on the planet. Oh and all those Eddas!

regarding night in summer, there's a couple months that it doesn't actually get dark at all, the sun at most just slightly dips below the horizon, enough to not be visible but not enough for it to get dark, in fact in the northernmore parts of the island you actually experience midnight sun where the sun doesn't go below the horizon at all.

That’s only in the very north of Iceland. They have a pretty normal amount of sunlight in the winter. I’ve been there in both the winter and spring and daytime didn’t seem particularly short.

@@robertt9342 probably. I’m including any time the sun is above the horizon and not sunset. Now Scotland, on the other hand, is very weird during the summer. The sun doesn’t set until 11pm!

imagine being only about 2km away from a volcano when it erupts, back in 92, i had just come down from the volcano, Mt Hekla, we were driving away, when the sky lights up behind us, and we see lava shooting up about 100m into the air, for a 6 year old, it was the coolest thing ive ever seen in my life :D

I've been reading into EM/RF discharges near volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Ive been thinking of cost effective sensors for a citizen science initiative to detect, aggregate and report changes in local ground conductance and the schumann resonances. I would hope these devices to assist in prediction of storms, eruptions, and fault line events. Now to watch the video and find out what I can learn!

Based on the headline of this discussion I assumed it was going to be about me and others having a tough time seeing a volcano erupt in the dark perhaps because "visual purple" was being created and destroyed. Instead it was about how scientists had a tough time doing experiments on volcano eruptions during the winter.

Shawn Wilsey has a great RU-vid channel which covers all sorts of geology related subjects. He does videos about the places he travels to around the US...especially out west. But also around the world. He covers topics that arise in world news...eg the Iceland eruptions, or the Tonga volcano. They are all extremely well explained and usually beautifully filmed.

It super sucks, considering that the housing situation in Iceland is really dire right now, after they had to evacuate Grindavik for good. One percent of Icelanders has to find a new home, because nobody can say with sufficient certainty if, after all those earthquakes, there are caverns under Grindavik, which could turn into sinkholes.

My thesis is about using seismic velocity as a gauge for volcanic activity, though really it's about how precipitation affects seismic velocity and gets in the way of seismic velocity being a gauge.

Phenomenal stuff AS. So glad to hear your full thoughts on future; the end came out right when we got sent home from college during my senior year cuz of COVID. I wish I'd kept track of how or why I subscribed to a channel. I know about half the time a new sub is simply a spinoff or alternate/additional content from a creator in already following (see all the WhistlerVerse & BradyVerse subs). Occasionally, it'll be a video in my Home feed or recommended off to the side (desktop). A couple times have been me just searching out a topic I was interested in (less so now than when I first made YT my primary viewing content after I cut the cord). A few were suggestions my (now grown) kid provided. Which, given the number of channels to which I still sub leaves a sizable number of channels that had to be creator recs, sources, or collabs. All that to say: adding another as introduced by Hank. And might I add, a welcome addition since I've only had 1 volcano/tectonic/geology dedicated channel in my list for the longest time.

Shawn's livestreams are great, we actually watched a new vent in Iceland open up live during the Feb. eruption on one of his streams. He was working with a drone company and doing a flight, when the new vent began to open up. Shawn spotted it and directed the drone operator over to view it.

FYI... the correct date of the Galeras stratovolcano tragedy in Columbia was January 14, 1993. Six volcanologists and three tourists were killed. Because they were located away from the sudden eruption, the workshop leader (a geologist) and six others on the volcano survived.

@@khills Why did Hank say (8:22) "If they do decide to evacuate the area ..."? In reality the evacuation of Grindavik happened November 10, 2023, and it has been mentioned in the Wikipedia article about Grindavik since November 11.

I could tell you that Grindavik actually hasn’t been fully evacuated - folks have been allowed back multiple times, and in fact there are still some stubborn souls there now, because the evacuations aren’t mandatory. They’re just of the “if things go sideways we won’t send SAR in to rescue you” sort of deals. Some folks came back a few times between November and lava and then bailed; some folks have been gone since November, some since the January fissure that spewed lava in town. For others, it was the sinkhole killing a man. And then, there’s a farm that’s currently in the “likely death zone” should the lava tongue actually make it to the ocean, and AFAIK they’ve never evacuated, as they’re technically outside Grindavik; there are lots of small farms like that in the area. Plus, of course, there’s the Blue Lagoon, which is on an evacuate and close, then reopen cycle. (None of that is getting into the gas, either - it’s caused some issues in other populated towns on the peninsula, and should the lava reach the ocean, other evacuations may have to happen.) But the reality is, that outro wasn’t in the script that came across my (freelancer) desk, and unlike some of the other Complexly productions, fact-checkers don’t review SciShow scripts after filming or post-production. The first time we see the finished product is the same time as the rest of you. So this is my guess: Hank was trying to tie the outro to the sponsorship, and he just didn’t know enough about the topic to know it would be an inaccurate comment. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I would love to have seen a volcanic eruption while I was in Iceland in 2022. Such an amazing country with amazing beauty. I do wish that grindavik is able to remain safe after this most recent eruption. Some of my favorite pictures taken were in grindavik. I can’t wait to return and enjoy this magnificent country.

DOAS is nearly identical to how astrophysics got its start on the 19th century by measuring absorption and emission spectra from stars and gas clouds. I'm a little surprised volcanologists only started using this very recently.

INSAR = Interferometric synthetic aperture radar. They compare the phase differences (fractions of wavelengths) between the radar imagery of different passes, and convert that to distance and thus ground deformation using the speed of light, frequency and wavelength of the radar.

i spent a week in iceland. may 2017. the sun set at 2330 and rose at 0430. kids were riding their bikes on the culdesac at 2230. also iceland was hit by the 2008 financial crisis worse than anyone so using real estate speculation as a segue into an ad read might be a first draft.

@@084ironmanI thought Iceland got its name, because Hrafna-Floki hiked up a mountain in the Westjords and saw the fjord full of ice and icebergs. So he name it Iceland. And Greenland was likely far more green when it was discovered than now.
