The Wage Gap VS Rationalism

This video goes over the rationalist argument against the wage gap in greater detail than my previous video on the subject of feminism. It is also a refutation of some of the points made by Unlearning economics, and why quantitative-only analysis for the wage gap just doesn't hold up to logical scrutiny.

The simplest argument against the pay gap is that "if women can be paid less for the same work , why do companies even hire men at all?" (We already know many companies shift production to poor countries where labor costs are less)

"uhh uhh literally everyone who's not me or my clique is utterly POWERED by hatred for non-white non-men" Thats what they would say/think. They think people are cartoon villains purposefully "oppressing" women due to some hateful feeling of superiority. when you realize leftoids are projecting about 99% of the time when they try explaining their opponents' motivations, it all makes sense. Leftoids are fueled by pure envy/hatred. See Cecilia; wtf does she mean by saying "men dominate certain fields"... like... yes...? Is stating a fact an argument? What's the implication? That men "dominate", i.e. discriminate against women inherently*? On projection: women are very cliquey. I've observed women excluding other women from their groups for no particular reason except for spite. Potentially, women project their own female thought process onto men as a explanation why women may not be hired as much.

I've been debating this with a feminist, and their reasoning for the wage gap was to just quote an Oxford University paper. What they didn't anticipate is me actually going and studying that paper, and it turns out the quote they took from it was just the initial hypothesis, and the entire rest of the paper was debunking it. Update: It's not an Oxford University paper, but a Harvard one, I just remembered it as being from a popular university and didn't bother to actually check.

Most of the economical data surrounding the wage gap is flawed. You don't need to factor in rationalism when you can simply look at WHY the data is flawed. (Nonetheless,this approach is generally preferable to going over countless research papers and lays down a general foundation that can be used to disprove a lot of iffy reasoning.)
@LoganLS0
@LoganLS0 Год назад
"I'm not going to go over this entire video and all the claims he makes in it." I did. Here's my comment: Women being discouraged from working is not evidence of discrimination against women. If anything it's evidence of "discrimination" in favor of women. Because working sucks and men don't have the option to not work. Also, being a housewife isn't "unpaid labor". It usually comes with room, board, and a stipend. And you're highly likely to be working for someone who is far more humane and generous than the average corporation. Plus if you don't like the position you can get divorced and receive a massive severance package. Also, even if we were to take the concept of "unpaid labor" seriously and accept that women do more of it, I would argue that the unpaid labor that men tend to do is more valuable on a per hour basis. Since changing breakpads, fixing plumbing, laying tile, building sheds, landscaping, cutting wood, moving furniture, electrical work, etc generally has a higher skill level and therefore market value than everyday domestic tasks. And for whatever reason, women don't like doing those things. I've been around 27 years and never met a woman who changed her own breakpads. Another thing, women should not do manual labor en masse. That's a terrible idea. It isn't like your job where you sit in a a cozy room and go at your own pace. Most women cannot move heavy objects for 10 hours a day at a pace anywhere near that of men. Those who can are unicorns who should be celebrated as such. But if you do it broadly you'll get unprofitable landscaping companies, miserable women with broken bodies, and men who resent their unproductive female coworkers. And lastly, by your own logic that survey that say gay boys do better than straight boys in school doesn't support your conclusion. Maybe less masculine boys do better in school because the female dominated teaching profession discriminates against masculinity.

In hindsight I might've been a little too worked up after watching his terrible video.

It doesn't make sense to blame "hiring discrimination" or "discrimination in the workplace" if there are, in fact, women in the same workplace earning more than male peers. If they're discriminating against all women, then why is it just you? "X causes Y, but only sometimes" doesn't make sense. There have to be other factors. It's basic causation.

Are most of the stores and flo o r space given over to men's spending or women's? A large majority of space is given over to women's shopping. How is this possible - earn less, but spend more? Meh people keep overcomplicating things. At least in the current day and age, in non 4th world shitholes, you can achieve anything you want with some planning and hard work (of course i'm talking about achievable goals, not saying everyone can become a trilionaire, but more like you can get a good job, find a good partner, start a family, have enough money for your hobbies, travel etc. if you so desire of course). Many people just don't want to do that, or more precisely have been taught to "live in the moment". They literally tank their futures for small scale fun in the span of a couple of years, and then they get mad at the system for them not having everything someone who was busting their ass that whole while, has. And all of this applies to anyone of either gender.

So? I have an annoyingly ethnic name, if my name was Mike Smith my job hunts would be vastly shorter. I consider this a feature, not a bug. I would say that it may appear like discrimination but it is actually an understanding of human behavior, the woman is more likely to just accept the offered starting wage/salary while the man is more likely to negotiate so to avoid the headache that is negotiating they offer a higher starting salary/wage to males, if more women negotiated their salaries/wages (a disagreeable behavior) they probably wouldn't continue this tactic.

The problem with this video is that you don't take social pressures into account. Women are socially expected to take care of the kids and do all the house work and men are expected to bring in more money to provide for the family. This is what leads to the wage gap but these differences aren't biological. After a baby has been born and has finished breast feeding there's no biological reason why the mother should be the primary caregiver. Absent of social pressures you should expect caregiver, house work and paid employment roles to be carried out equally by both sexes once the children are more than a year old.
@1685Violin
@1685Violin 10 месяцев назад
And? That doesn't disprove anything the video said. The wage gap is still pure nonsense.
@thebigreddub
@thebigreddub 10 месяцев назад
@@1685Violin Okay. The video is about how the wage gap is a natural consequence of the differing incentives between men and women. Thing is, what you're incentivised to do is largely dependant on the society you live in. Let's say, for example, my motivation is to be respected by the people around me. In the modern western world, I might become a doctor or an engineer; in medieval europe, I would become a priest; in the roman republic I would become a soldier. In each case my motivation is the same but what I am incentivised to do is based on the society that I live in. Now one of the main claims of the video is that women who want to have children are incentivised to look for a job that's more flexible and that usually means a job that pays less. This only makes sense if you assume that the way our society is currently, is the only way that it can be. It's entirely possible to build a society in which jobs are flexible and pay well. This is a problem caused by the way we as a scoiety view work and the incentives of those who employ workers. The wage gap is one of the consequences of this broader problem.

This can be seen in this Office of National Statistics report from 2016. www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peopleinwork/earningsandworkinghours/articles/womenshouldertheresponsibilityofunpaidwork/2016-11-10

Then, it's not about direct discrimination against women doing the exact same job, it's about cultural habits according to you. You can discuss if that's the case and if it would be better to push culture in a different direction (more so than it's already being done, as women are more and more incentivized to build a career instead of being caregivers), but it's a different discussion. @@thebigreddub

@Andyisgodcky
@Andyisgodcky Год назад
Can't tell if you're being disingenuous or not. Its a percentage. A dollar has 100 cents in it. The claim is that for every dollar earned, a woman earns only $0.70. That is 30% less than a man. Yes, when you scale it down into the smallest amounts, thats 7 pennies for every dime a man earns. Trivial at that point, but when you scale it back up, thats $7,000 for a man's $10,000. Thats THEIR claim, which is bullshit for numerous reasons I have no need of going into here. Also, "Living wage" is a nebulous term meant to abuse a person's empathy for others in an attempt to win support for whatever arbitrary number gets thrown around. First it was $13. Then it was $15. Now its $20. They just keep adding to it and calling it a 'living wage.' It means nothing other than "Pay people far more for the same skill-less, mundane work they're already doing."
@thedabblingwarlock
@thedabblingwarlock 9 месяцев назад
1. States and even counties have different costs of living. I did the math based off my own expenses, which are probably a bit high considering I live in Alabama and I like to keep my house cool, and it is possible to live off less than $15/hour or $30k/year. It's not going to be pleasant. You'll have to be disciplined in what you spend money on, but it is possible as long as you don't have debt to worry about. $30k/year in California or NYC isn't anywhere near enough to cover rent. 2. Companies have an incentive to pay their employees enough to keep them. No matter how much experience an employee has and how little skill is needed, there's going to be a learning curve while they are brought up to speed on how things work in the company and are trained on the various systems they'll need to know to do their jobs. Companies also have to pay for mandatory gear (and honestly I think any company that wants things standardized should consider it as part of investing into their workforce, but that's a different topic) The more turnover you have, the more overhead you have because you're having to spend more hours training new employees. You also risk burning out your management staff, which if you lose them causes even more headaches. Minimum wage in Alabama is $7.25, but most of the job postings I'm seeing for fast food places are offering $12/hour. Whether or not they are actually paying that is a different matter entirely, but the point is that those places are offering wages that are a good deal higher than the minimum, and pretty close to what I was making at my old job. If you do even a half-way decent job, you're likely to get raises, and if you're willing to work extra shifts, you can also get overtime (assuming that you're working full time) which bumps that up to $18/hr. It's not get rich kind of money, but where I live, at least, it's enough to survive on your own while you build up skills or look for other job opportunities. 3. Not all labor is equal. Working a cash register, using a mop, and washing dishes in a sink are not high skill jobs. This isn't a dunk on the people who do those jobs, but you can learn most of what you need in less than thirty minutes and they are jobs that almost anyone can do. Basically, the pool of people that a company can pull from to fill those positions is huge compared to more skilled positions. If you want better pay, look at where there aren't enough people to fill the need. The US is in dire need of tradespeople like machinists, welders, plumbers, carpenters, and mechanics. Most companies are willing to take people on as apprentices or pay for them to go to a trade school. The work is hard, but I'd argue that it's a more fulfilling career than most white collar ones. 4. Raising the minimum wage isn't going to solve an issue with cost of living. It adds a fixed overhead cost that a business owner has to pay in order hire extra hands, which means that business owner either needs to accept lower margins or raise their prices. People like to harp on business owners and corporations being greedy, but there is case law on the books that a company has to maximize shareholder returns. Not raising prices not only opens up the owner or CEO to more risk, but also opens them up to being sued. So the increased costs of raising minimum wages, which causes everyone's wages to go up since a company is going to want to keep people it's trained working for them since they've already invested time and money into them, leads to increased prices to cover those costs. In addition, even the company doesn't need to lay off anyone, they now have to pay more for each employee that they grow by, slowing growth and disincentivizing companies from hiring new people. Sure, you may not lose jobs, but you're also going to have a harder job growing the job market. This means more unemployment which leads to further strains on government budgets as they try to pay for welfare programs with a reduced tax base. So no, raising minimum wage isn't the answer. Letting the market do it's think is more likely to be beneficial in the long run rather than trying to meddle with it and mucking things up.

I have a good idea for this. Simply call everything feminine weak and everything masculine strong. When you work, thats masculine, when you take a break thats feminine. This way, every argument is done! And people cam finally start to do what they whant. So when a woman works, thats masculine and we just accept that this is how we say it. And if a man takes a break, its feminine and we just accept that ee say it. We just need a way that is the easiest to start and work with. Seriously. And there should be certain sections that can be done by both men and women and it doesnt have to be said wether thats masculine or not. Id say that exessive training in the gym or working really rely hard is masculine while doing nothing all das is feminine. But to have something in the middle, shall not be determined at all. Running, climbing is both masculine and femine because they are the most normal and infinite reasonable activities for the human body a human can do. Other wise we have swimming wich is not human so it needs a lot of strength and power wich most males are more interested in having then most females so its masculine. Of course we should look at the fact that humans just as animals (that isnt actually a big difference) have the strength to survive so both men and women inhabit this strength to survive the "impossible" (attack of a cool shark that is way more chad then us by being older then trees). We need two truths: 1what we are and what we should be again(feminine)2what we might should be "again because we forgot to be like that/because its important for survival and glory". So i think that the truth here lies in sharp advice that directly tells us certain things. Its not wise to use these phrases but intelligent. If we say that being weak is feminine and being strong is masculine, then we can begin to focus on not doing these things. Of course men also cry and women can be strong. Im just saying that men shouldnt cry and women dont really have the best genoms to develope more muscles and if they do, it can actually lead to health risks. I ultimatly feel that im not an idiot or dumb person for saying this but i know and feel in my gut that this suggestion could have been presented better.
