Jonathan That is exactly what Norman Reedus said to the show runner. He needed his tough guy moment for his own ego. Even though they have been setting up Negan and Beta’s rivalry all season.

Negan doesn’t even get a swing in. I mean, I didn’t really need a long fight like Daryl and Beta had and it really wouldn’t have made sense given the immediate situation. But I was really hoping we’d see Negan breaking Lucille over Beta’s back like in the comic.

Rob Stefani Couldn’t agree more. They backed themselves into a corner with the zombie situation. But they could have easily done a fight scene on the lower floors of the building they were in, similar to the Rick and Negan fight from season 7.

Beta had gone insane and he was hallucinating the walkers talking to him throughout his last two episodes.

Honestly beta would’ve most likely killed negan if he even had a thought that negan knew who he was. He killed a whisperer who realized who he was after gamma ripped off half of his mask. I assume he would kill negan as well.
