The Waltons - Happy Easter. In celebration I'm talking about An Easter Story - the 2 hour episode from Season 1. Olivia (Michael Learned) has polio and the entire family rallies around her. I hope you enjoy this behind the scenes about one of my all time favorite episodes.

Yesterday, I had the great privilege of visiting elderly seniors in A nursing home being A blessing to them and I met this one lady in her room who can't even walk at all. She cried the whole time because I was her only visitor for Easter.

This was a pivotal episode in the legacy of the series. It had the classic feel of the Homecoming yet propelled the program to a long-running series. So many memorable moments where viewers became emotionally invested in this special family for years to come. In fact, a lifetime for many of us.

Our family would gather around the TV once a week on Walton’s night and watch every episode. My father was born in 1929 and he recognized some of the characters, as people he knew in his little community. It gives me wonderful memories to watch each rerun episode, because it takes me back to our living room when I was only 13-years old in 1972, when it first aired. To this day, the. Walton’s is my favorite TV show. In 2022 my husband and I had the pleasure to stay at John and Olivia’s bed-and-breakfast in Schuyler Virginia. We slept in the girls room. I felt like I was home.

Judy, to my knowledge no other regular series ever did an episode about Easter because it was usually rerun time. I think this is the favorite of most of the fans. My mother always loved it!!! Judy, Lee Rich had already completed his order of episodes for CBS. Fred Silverman asked for another episode because 'The Bicycle' was no. 1 in the ratings first. 'The Easter Story' was not eligible for the Emmys that first season. Apparently Michael won her second Emmy for this episode. John McGreevey was nominated for it the second season. I think the Baldwins went to both churches at different times. They talked again about being Episcopal in 'The Baptism' episode. Ellen had a handwritten copy from Jon of 'Ironing Board Blues' on her wall. Michael Learned told me she changed the ending after talking to Earl Hamner and Lee Rich. It was her idea to have Elizabeth call her. This is one of the great episodes!!!

@@judynorton2598 Judy, I was raised for many years by my grandmother, for good reasons, that I wish not to go into. I did return home when I was old enough to take care of myself. At any means, my dear Grandmother gave me my foundation at a very young age, which I’ll never be able to repay her for. I have another yes YET another question that I think would be interesting here, that I’ve thought about. I do wonder where on the table of poor, medium, rich, assets/income: would we categorize the family of the Waltons. My grandmother was born in 1908, married in 1927. They already had two children before the stock market crashed. They were just starting out, and they ended up picking cotton in the fields of Alabama as sharecroppers for years during this time period. She told me that many whites that had money but lost everything would snub the black people there, as if they were better. Her and my grandfather, after eating by themselves the first couple of nights noticed that all the blacks would bring only one dish at a gathering each night. They would sing and my grandparents enjoyed it so much. She and my grandfather talked to each other about it and the following morning asked could they join them. They said of course you may join us. She said the whites would look at us eating with such hatred, but she didn’t care. She said they’re as good as we are, and we ate much better than most there, being you only had to prepare one dish to join, all the dishes were grand eating!!! Should I say the best dishes fore they only had to make one, so they could make it extra special. Lord I told you I wouldn’t write a book, oh me. My grandparents did survive and had nine children. They also bought a farm later on in the 40’s. At any means my question is “how the “Waltons” would be ranked in that economy, during that time frame. Let me tell you, because they had their own land passed to them, and a home already on it, they were so blessed. I would if I were guessing, at least middle, or perhaps, even upper middle class. Just to have your own roof over your head, and farm to work with, not have to share with others. Of course the “Waltons” were great to share with others always, as it should be in life. Well I hope you see my point. I do wonder on a national level where they would stand economically. I know there were so many struggles throughout the show, even during War times. When I say this, it’s also very true that a third of the population was out of work, and in food lines. I can still remember the characters of Olivia and Grandma saying, we sure are blessed even in these times. Well the “Dust Bowl Cousins” come to mind. It’s an interesting topic I feel. Sorry so long, but my grandmother is the inspiration of many of my questions. I’ve heard so so many stories and I have kept them all. Toney Dale So very SORRY it's so long :... i HAVE A HARD TIME GETTING TO THE POINT, ALWAYS HAVE....... NOT A WORD FROM ME FOR A GOOD WEEK!!!!

I remember this episode when it first aired well, I was 12 years old and my own mother became afflicted with an illness. I also remember the dance scene with GW. I was about ready to start my junior high school dance sojourns. Kudos to Michael for playing Olivia in ill health. A heart tugging episode. I'm glad both our mothers made it through their health plights . Great video Judy . Thank you again!

One of my favorite episodes as well Judy. The Walton’s touched me in so many ways and still does. I grew up in a family of eight brothers. Although my grandparents did not live with us they lived only a few miles away and we saw them nearly every day. This episode always reminds of a time when my own mother (currently 89) was bed ridden for two years with back problems. Happy Easter and God Bless By the way that color looks great on you.😊

I think "Are you gonna take me in your arms or do I have to wham you" has got to be in the top ten comments of Mary Ellen! She had a lot of good lines. I always saw Mary Ellen as tough and athletic so you embodied her well. I come from a family of 15. Nine boys and 6 girls. Rural Ohio 1970s but I was quite young in 19 72 I was 3. This family was our family minus dysfunction. Although I think the kids in the Waltons ran away a lot more ha ha. I adored this show still do.....Thankyou

This was an excellent review of a pivotal episode. Polio was rampant in earlier years. I am 80 now and one of my third grade classmates ended up in an iron lung. I remember visiting her. Not sure what happened with her after that. It was a blessing to me to see portrayed in the Walton’s that polio affected folks differently and I have no understanding as to why. Now, I hear of people who had mild cases in their youth who get affected again as they age. Again, I do not know why. Thanks, Judy. Revisiting the thread of this episode was very healing for me, in some way.

Important for life & for storytelling challenges, the superlative and beloved Michael Learned said, in an interview, her father’s life had a moment like Olivia’s rush out of bed when Olivia hadn’t seemed able to walk. The interview is on video online somewhere. If I recall correctly, Michael’s father had struggled with polio or another muscular or neurological disease. Ms. Learned said she suggested the subconscious reaction as a way to better resolve the story’s ending, rather than the original idea considered. Thanks, Judy! Your videos are Joys. (I hope Robert Wightman might be a guest. He took up such a challenge becoming John Boy and for all grateful fans he was key in overcoming business production perspectives, thus helping The Waltons continue several more years! I hope he knows he’s a welcome and brave Waltons champion!)

Me too. I believe it was on Thursday nights. Grandpa and my Dad worked together on the farm and Grandma and Grandpa lived 3 miles away. I guess Thursday night was "date night" for Mom and Dad. They'd drop my older sister and me off with the grandparents and we'd get to eat frozen pizza and ice cream, all the things Mom would never let us have. We watched the Waltons. Grandma was just as excited about each new episode as we were. Good times!

Hi Judy, I remember this episode especially the conflict of religious beliefs (God's will or not) and the plot with Mary Ellen and GW, which was mentioned in The First Casualty when Mary Ellen tells Curt she taught GW to dance. And the scene when we realize Mama can walk is a truly joyful moment. I always shed a few tears at the sunrise service as we are all so grateful for Mama's recovery, this Easter miracle. Thank you to all who made this episode and series possible.

Our family invited our Grandma over to dinner on nights when The Waltons came on. We'd have a little bit fancier meal those nights, and then we'd finish up quickly so we could all take our places in the living room in front of the TV before the show came on. And I remember this particular show, so vividly--and what a relief it was when Mama got up out of her bed to look out that window, down, onto the crocuses.

My favorite scene is where they all do a little routine to entertain each other. In our family we put on shows like that when we get together on holidays. My nieces always do a special dance they make up every Christmas for example. we sing songs together etc. The Waltons often remind me of my own crazy lovable family. Thats one of the reasons I love the show 😍
