The Waltons - Patsy Rahn (Betsy Randolph in The Silver Wings) joins Judy Norton (Mary Ellen) about working on The Waltons. The real plane crash during filming, wearing skimpy costumes, working with David Harper (Jim Bob), moving on from acting, early years as a ballet dancer, then becoming a poet and photographer.

David Harper is such a good actor and this was a standout for The Waltons and David Harper.I think this episode, along with the one he finds out he had a twin brother. So emotional. This episode kind of reminds me of the coming of age movie, Summer of ‘42. Not exactly similar but the young wife of soldier away at war.

@@judynorton2598 Thanks Judy. I remember this episode in spots. John told Jim that he had to stop seeing her, since she was married; that it could only end badly. But poor Jim was pretty much smitten (or in love) and told Dad that he couldn't or wouldn't. Then the end came abruptly (though I forget how or why) and Jim told Dad that he realized now that he (Dad) had been right, because he (Jim) had lost his heart to the married lady by persisting in their acquaintance and that getting over it would now be painful. Not nearly as sad as John Boy and Jenny but still fairly sad. I have to call him "Jim", as I really suspect that Jim-Bob Walton (if not David Harper) must have gotten very tired of the nickname. The writers should have upgraded Jim-Bob to "James Robert." That would have been so much better.

How scary for Miss Rahn to have had to witness a near crash of that plane- starting literally over her head! And, yet, the camera operator just seemed to shrug it off as 'a day's work' in spite of how rough the glide-landing wound up being! Yeah, it's not just performers who have often risked it all to provide entertainment on film,etc.! Happy to hear that she had liked the show before and that, despite that scary near-crash overhead, she had had a fulfilling time performing in that episode even though she didn't get to perform with the entire regular cast! Thanks for hosting her and bringing us that interview!
@wardarcade7452
@wardarcade7452 Год назад
I hope you don't my adding that it's a testament to the scriptwriters and Miss Rahn herself that the character of Betsy stayed sympathetic and likable throughout the entire episode- even factoring in that she was a married woman who had befriended a teen boy (and had a not-entirely dowdy wardrobe). It could have easily veered into either belittling Betsy or becoming tasteless but the class was kept throughout and even though the bond ended sadly with Betsy finding herself widowed and shattered with Jim-Bob consoling her. However, knowing that with his youth and her fresh widowhood neither were in the best frame to attempt to take it any further and they'd have to part ways before too long, it still seemed as though the bond had ultimately bettered each of them. And I credit Miss Rahm for helping make Betsy into a deeper character that the viewers could care- not every performer could have been successful at doing so even with the script! Again, thanks for this!

Ideally, you don't stall your engine when you are flying a loop, but it's easy to do if you don't have enough speed going into the loop or bank too steep or if you are running your fuel too lean. It kind of depends on speed and wind speed, etc. If a plane stalls doing a loop, the pilot just has to relax the stick to reduce the angle of attack, get some airflow over the wings and continue to fly the airplane.

There is an aerobatic maneuver with biplanes called a "hammerhead" when the pilot starts a loop, takes it straight up nearly to stall, 180s into a dive and pulls up to form the bottom of a new loop, ascending nearly to stall again, doubles back into a dive, etc, etc... Growing up, there was an aerodome some 30-40 miles south of us where the owner had a collection of biplanes and other aircraft and would do summer air shows... He unfortunately was killed in a crash: the property changed hands and became a more traditional amusement park with rides and waterslides some 40 years ago... Thank you to you and your guest. Great interview. I watched the show religiously throughout its run and this episode has always stood out in my memory. I was in college at the time and quite a few college guys were smitten with Patsy in that episode.

Betsy would have made a great re-ocurrung character. I'm surprised her career in Hollywood did not take flight as her character and acting was so believable. Loved this episode and glad David Harper got this opportunity. We are always pulling for him!!

The Silver Wings episode was on Lifetime tonight, which I thoroughly enjoyed and vaguely remember watching as a child. I decided to look up some details about it after watching. Thank you Patsy and than you Judy for this spectacular dimension that gives us all a new perspective due to the expanse of elapsed time. Very nice. Keep up the good work!

I really enjoyed this segment with Patsy. It seemed like it was recently this episode was on. I thought how cute Patsy was. I liked the outfits she wore. I was in high school @ the time & in the summer my friends & I were wearing those type of outfits( halter tops). I wondered about how much difference in age Patsy was to David. Thanks again for doing these Behind the Scenes, Judy! So interesting & fun!

Thanks for the memories. To my recollection, biplanes don't normally cut out like that in the shows I've seen. My Dad told me such things are the result of the mechanic (and crew chief in the US Army Air Corp).

What you described when the engine died is called a dead stick landing. Sometimes this is needed especially in the older prop planes. I suspect that some of that may be because of the technology of the 30's and early 40's era. A dead stick landing is essentially flying a glider. It's a challenge and pilots don't really like to do it unless they have to. The reason is that with no engine and close to the ground there's no chance to do a go around to try again which means you have to land it or the unthinkable happens. Likely why they stalled is one because the engines of the 30's weren't that reliable and were also more susceptible to high altitudes (higher altitude less oxygen). I would imagine that the planes of the era weren't too hard to dead stick land if the pilot was intending to do it.

Wow - thank you for all that technical info. Good to know.

Judy, I admit that Patsy’s story about the plane reminded me of the plane crash that claimed the life of actor Robert Francis (Ensign Willie Keith in The Caine Mutiny, 1954). The engine of the plane he was flying (as a student pilot) gave out during a practice takeoff. I think he tried to avoid having the plane coming down in residential areas near the Burbank Airport

And I read that a SAG advisory about avoiding dangerous pastime activities was due to what happened to Robert Francis

Robert Francis decided to learn to fly aircraft. He was accompanied by his flight instructor and a fellow student. All 3 of them were killed. This was a year after The Caine Mutiny (his best known film role) was released. I first the story in a book about the deaths of noted Hollywood celebrities, as well as IMDB

I love all of your shows & interviews Judy, but this one is one of my favorites and thank you Patsy!! Two of my favorite shows back in the second half of the 1970's when I was a teenage boy was The Waltons and General Hospital, actually I still watch both shows today. I especially loved "The Silver Wings" episode when I first saw it, because I already adored Patsy Rahn and knew what a talented actress she was, she was the original Dr. Monica Quartermaine on General Hospital in 1976 and 1977! Thank you Patsy for sharing your memories, your photography artwork and for letting us know what you are doing now!
