If you ever go to Schuyler, VA, be sure to visit the gift shop (if it's still there) that's in the small building in front of the Hamner home. Last time I was there (and that's been several years), they had printed copies of the recipe for "the recipe"! The only ingredient missing was the ingredient that gave "the recipe" it's octane (according to the cashier, they could not, legally, include that ingredient but by searching the internet, it could be easily found!).

@@loveablegigi1961 I find it surprising that they didn't include the ingredient that gave it "Octane." Yeast and sugar are the key ingredients for making alcohol. It is the act of distillation that concentrates that alcohol that is the illegal part. Take the still out of the equation, and all you are effectively making is wine. Whether the wine/beer is palatable or not is irreverent, and the manufacturing of wine and beer is not illegal.

I've always felt, Judy, that both John-Boys were great. We need to remember that Richard's version of John-Boy hadn't been shot down in Europe, or, in later movies, had already moved past that trauma. Robert Wightman played a version of John-Boy who was haunted by WWII and thus was more subdued. Robert Wightman played having to comeback very well.

I found the story line of Curt being alive very relevant. My uncle was at Pearl Harbor during the attack. He lived but came back a different man. People didn't understand PTSD back then. There was strife in my family because of my uncle and his change and condition. Eventually a rift formed between him and my father who was younger. The two men, although living in the same town, never talked again for the rest of their lives. I had cousins in town that I never met.

Hi Judy! I found about your channel via Dave Sundstrom’s interview this past week. I was about 7 when I and my folks started watching “The Waltons”. We watched it weekly for years. Throughout the years since, the scenes that I remember the most was when John Sr got struck by lightning, John Boy going to write the story of the Hindenburg landing and later saw its destruction, and when Ellen Corby suffered a stroke, and how they wrote that in. It was my first introduction of what happens to stroke victims. Glad they kept her in the show as much as they could. I know it had to be difficult for all to deal with. Cheers, Jeff.

A thought on the difference in John Boy between the 2 actors in my opinion is that, John Boy was in a coma from the war and not only can war change someone but so can being in a coma. Robert played the character in a way he thought that not only did war and the coma change him but just being older and more mature changed him.

My favourite ad-lib is in one of the later episodes when the character JohnCurtis was about 3. The family was sitting around the table and one of the babies playing JC interrupted Ralph to announce he had new shoes. Ralph didn't bat an eye! He leaned over and made a show of admiring his shoes and asked who gave them to him. The baby replied - Pat (costume coordinator) and actually pointed at her off stage. Ralph kind of chuckled and said - oh Pat! She must live on a nearby farm does she? It was such a sweet, endearing moment and showed how gentle and patient Ralph was with the kids.

With regard to Robert Wrightman - I think he was a wonderful “replacement.” To me, the fact that Richard Thomas left on his own free will, made it easier to accept Robert. Had Richard been unjustly fired for instance, I think it would have been very difficult to accept Robert. However, Richard didn’t want to be on the series any longer and it certainly isn’t enjoyable to watch someone play a role they don’t want to embrace. (Just my humble opinion.) I enjoyed watching Robert Wrightman’s performances in the series. When he slept on the park bench, lost his beloved typewriter and had no money, I absolutely ached inside. He reminds me so much of my sweet grandson, Nathan. Robert Wrightman seems like a very gentle soul - someone whom embodied the same qualities as John-Boy. I think he was a great choice. Thank you Judy - as always this was another very enjoyable discussion.

Thanks, again, Judy for sharing your wonderful insights. Two of my favorites that featured Mary Ellen among others are The Actress and especially The Quilting! I wonder what you think about how the quilting dilemmas were solved, if such a solution would fly in today's times. John Boy really laid it on thick in the attic with the ole "fear, obligation, and guilt." lol 😄 Mr. Hamner's mother's side of the family (Gianinni's) were Italian and John Boy's reasoning in that scene is very Italian family-oriented with respect and love for elders and traditions, some of which Mary Ellen chafed at understandably. The entire episode was a very good showcase of the actors' great talents. Have a great week! Bless you and all the Walton's people! ☺️🍂🍁🧡📝📚

We were a family of nine kids growing up in rural South Texas, and we loved watching the Waltons. My favorite scene was in the episode The Baptism where John Walton stormed out of the chapel during a lightning storm. A visiting televangelist had irritated him with a fire and brimstone sermon. Olivia Walton chased after John and told him the preacher was just trying to save his soul. Amidst the rain and thunder John shouted “I’ll do my fighting!“ and stormed off into the night.

Hi Judy! I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy these " behind the scenes " stories about the Walton's. I just watched one of my favorite episodes ,the Conflict, about Martha Corine and her family being forced off their land. Unfortunately, Mary Ellen didn't have much of a role. This episode gets to me every time I watch it. The wonderful actress who played Martha Corine was so believable in the part and I really felt for her. This scenario is still playing out in this country and could very soon in my area. Anyway, I look forward to more great Walton's stories. God bless you.

I liked Robert Wightman's part as John-Boy because he brought peace about him. Richard was the same but Robert really sounded like and reminded me of David Harper. They looked like were related anyway. I liked Jonesy's character and his way of calling John-Curtis "Johnny". My favorite was when the family was not having Thanksgiving but John left Olivia to join the family he helped in all of the family's problems. Especially Erin's husband. I came from a big family so I don't know what it's like not to be around a lot of family. Thanks for the memories :) I hope you have all of the seasons on DVD :)
