The Waltons - Ask Judy as Judy Norton (Mary Ellen) answers questions about shooting schedule, time off, family events, getting sick. Did the animals live on set or go home at night?
What about that mystery door in the living room?
More about how we handled noise while filming? Noise from other productions on the lot?

I remember them losing some chickens. I think props was in charge of them, and the prop man was lamenting that they'd fly up into the trees to roost in the evenings and then predators on the lot (I'm guessing raccoons?) would catch and kill them. Eventually, I remember they stopped having chickens living there.

Hi Judy! Here are some questions for "Ask Judy:" Why is Robert Wightman rarely mentioned by you and/or the other cast members? Does he ever participate in reunion events, cast gatherings, etc? I have always felt that Wightman was put in an impossible position... having to follow Richard Thomas. I believe, however, that he did an admirable job. It seems as if his contribution to the show is totally overlooked by many people. Just wondering why?
@judynorton2598
@judynorton2598 8 месяцев назад
Since Richard came back for the reunion movies we all lost contact with Robert Wightman. We had much stronger bonds with Richard and worked with him much longer so I think it’s instinctive for us to think of Richard as John Boy. Robert was very nice and we all got along great.

I watched a Johnny Carson tonight show a few nights ago on TV, and Dean Martin was on it. Dean was talking about Michael Learned being on his Christmas special back in 1975. Dean Martin acted drunk throughout the Interview. HE ASKED JOHNNY "I'm having on my Christmas show that lady Michael Landon from the Prarie.". Johnny said no you mean Michael Learned from the Waltons. How can you get the 2 mixed up? Lol

@@bluejay713 It's when John, Olivia, Erin learn the English children stowed away in the military truck and the Walton's find out and search for them. The children are on the runaway and a plane is landing and of course John rescues them. So good. That's when you see the 70s cars causing by at 55 mph, the speed limit then! Lol. The little boy is played by Kami Cotler's brother and the girl was a singing sensation of some sort in Australia. You might know all this so I'll quit rambling. Funny you mentioned the airplane, one of the few bloopers out there for the Waltons is the episode John Boy first meets Jenny when they follow her outside and then had to cut because of the airplane over head. I often wondered why they didn't use the door to Grandma and Grandpa room more. Thank you for the information on that and all the great animals from the show. Thanks for answering more rather intriguing questions! Yes, it's odd that they had Miss Corby go up the stairs to the little landing at the Grandparents' Bedroom then have to walk down- AFTER Grandma had come home from her stroke and she had to drag her right side instead of just using the door between the Living Room to the Grandparents' Bedroom that Grandma was seen walking through once a few years before! Also, it makes sense that the animals (except perhaps the chickens) roosted elsewhere besides the set when not needed for a scene.'The Waltons' sure had many animals down the years- maybe even more than 'Green Acres' ! Thanks again for answering these questions!

John Dayton has a remarkable memory! Ill bet those peacocks were noisy! Your families were very supportive of your careers by agreeing to cooperate with contracts that tied up your time for a greater portion of the year! I wondered if any of Earl's family ever visited the set and maybe watched a day of filming? You've shared your interest with horses and Jon is also a musician. I wondered if the rest of the cast have interests beyond acting? Kami became a teacher and education administrator. Does she have any other interests? Do the 'Walton women" ever get together for a collaborative project such as a quilting bee? Just remembering your wonderful storyline about the quilting bee! Are there other athletes such as yourself among the cast? I like your headband, Judy! I just put together a Christmas wreath that features a bow with the same print! I'm hoping if time allows you might share a tour of your horse stables, if that's something you're comfortable with. Introduce us to your horse! I probably should have asked Jon if he got to work with the studio musicians? Did The Waltons have their own musicians or was there a studio orchestra that recorded for all the different series? Are you all set for the holidays? Will you be decorating a tree or baking? What do you all do with your fan mail from the show? Thanks so much for sharing your time and stories with us! Have a good week! ✨❤️✨💚✨🎄✨

Hi Judy: Talk about ambient or intrusive noises from other sources: when the smog was at its worst there was an undeniable effect on image quality that had no remedy, regardless of film quality. The most noticeable years were mid-1950s into the early 80s where you could see what you were breathing. There wasn't a single shoot taking place outside during the warmer months twhen the air quality was truly terrible. It was also noticeable further out in the valley. In some cases you can tell the early morning shoots and beautiful skies, but by late afternoon the smog obscured the blue sky. And there were times when filming was such that you could actually see the progression/march of the smog. The exceptions would have been some of the gorgeous winter days that only Angelinos could fully appreciate OR if it was right after rain showers. That always cleared the air. Regardless of the naysayers, the catalytic converters, along with other measures, have improved the air quality substantially.

In " A Decade of the Walton's," Jim Bob asks how Corabeth is related to them. Olivia says that John and Corabeth are second cousins. There are episodes that show Olivia's Aunt Kate, who is her mother's sister. We see a Uncle Cody in season one. Rose from season 8 & 9 is some kind of cousin to Olivia. I watched that movie the other day. I love it! You are all such great actors even being so young and just grew right into your characters thru the years! Thank you for sharing your beautiful voice singing. That was one of my Mom's favorite Christmas songs and she would have loved hearing you. It got the emotions rolling down my cheeks but that is ok. Mom didn't watch much TV but she never missed The Waltons. My Mom wrote a Christmas Poem years ago. I am going to post it here but if you don't want to keep it on here I will not be offended if you have to delete it. Just always try to share it this time of year. Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New year. Here is her poem. Forgotten Son How sad it is for Me to see, My children when they ignore Me. I gave them life from the very start, There should be room for Me within their heart. I gave them life a second time, Why do they still remain so blind? I sent My son to set you free, Not just to make a day of glee. You celebrate His birth each year, Your spirit rejoicing as it draws near. You give fancy gifts and feasts galore, Still no one hears Him, knocking at the door. Even children that claim My name: Oh, I know that some of them would say, "Of course I know the meaning of Christmas Day!" Then you put Me out of your mind, 'Til you need Me again in troubled times. Friends and family might believe it is true That Christmas means all the right things to you. But your Heavenly Father knows all the time, What thoughts dwell within your mind. Is my Son your first thought on Christmas Day? When you awake do you find time to pray? If the Bible and gifts were set side by side, Would you read my Word and put the gifts aside? As for the children I gave to you, Would they understand any better than you? If the Bible was lying under the tree, Would they reach for it and shout with glee? No, I'm afraid when all is done, You all would have forgotten my Son. Among the gifts and fancy wrappings under the tree, The Book of My Word remains forgotten, like my Son and Me. For the next segment of Ask Judy: what was your favorite episode to be a part of? And do you ever rewatch episodes for leisure? If so what is your reaction to watching yourself on the screen? I love these segments and I continue to look forward to more. Thank you so much for these Judy ❤️

I enjoyed so many episodes - but being able to go to work and ride horses as in The Wager - was always a special treat. I sometimes watch episodes, as to my reaction to watching myself, it depends on the episode and what I’m doing. Some I have fun with. - others are hard for me to watch myself for a variety of reasons. I get self-conscious and nit pick silly things. Thanks for watching.

Can you discuss royalties associated with syndication and reruns of the show? Were contracts negotiated considering syndication in the future back in the 1970’s…? Thanks.
@judynorton2598
@judynorton2598 8 месяцев назад
Residuals from my experience are part of the union contracts and are standard. I guess there might be some cases where someone is able to negotiate something different. Those contracts have changed over the years, so how and what covers our show has varied.

I watched The Waltons as child in the 70's. Last year my wife and I picked up a box set of all the episodes and decided we should as a couple watch the entire series. We are watching the final season now and I didn't realize Ralph Waite had left the show. So for a question could you reply as to why did he leave? and what was it like for you and the rest of the cast to lose him. Warren

Thanks Judy! John Dayton is such a treasure. I may have asked this before, but speaking of John…after Kate Hepburn passed away, what became of her Oscars? I read somewhere once that the Academy either technically owns all Oscars, or has the “right of first refusal” to buy them back from an actor’s estate. Do you or John know the answer to this? Thanks!

Question maybe for your next Ask Judy segment: Two of the animals that were used a lot were Blue the mule and the hound dog, Reckless. Were any of the cast members attached to any of these animals or any of the other ones that were used on the set? Were you allowed to ride the mule or play with the dog off camera?
@judynorton2598
@judynorton2598 8 месяцев назад
We did hop on the mule sometimes between scenes, but not often. We could play with the dog a bit, but he/she was a working dog, so that had to take precedence.

Hi Judy, So, you need questions! I am up to the challenge :) I got a treat hearing an interview with Barry Levingston who played Chip on My Three Sons and is still acting today. It's a fascinating interview to hear. He talked about Paul Newman, Fred McMurray and so on. This leads to three questions. 1) One thing he talked about (among many things) was today's directors are not on set anymore. They tend to be in a booth while the AD does all the hands on work. He stated he never even really meets the director - but he stated that Clint Eastwood does not do that. He is on set and doesn't use an AD for that work. So, I guess that is one huge difference in today's filming. Anyway it got me thinking. When you hear cut or hear 'action' does it panic you in any way as you have to go from relaxed to focus or is this something you get used to? 2) Barry talked about Fred McMurray on My Three Sons and how private a person he was. He wouldn't ever interact with anyone and kept to himself. He was always polite and so on but Barry claimed that pressure to live up to that image was very hard for him. It made me think of Michael or Ralph. Did you ever sense they too had that pressure to live up to the image that the show presented for themselves. Did Ralph have to present 'Daddy Walton' in public or could he just be himself? Same with Michael? 3) Barry stated he got great advice from Rodney McDowell about transitioning to an adult actor. he stated to go to New York and do theater because you have to learn the craft and take on a variety of roles to survive (and you avoid the Hollywood BS) - not my words. Did you too choose theater for that reason and did it help you move from a child actor to an adult actor? 4) Finally: A question for Jon Walmsley - if he's interested. I was curious if he uses pedals and what brand he uses. Plus, what is his practice routine? Does he do spider crawls and scales or just goes right to songs. What is his practice routine? Does he have a schedule for practice or when he has time. Thanks! As always love your channel and thank you for always responding to comments!

Another great episode, Thank you so much for sharing all these great thoughts and memories. I do have a question. As someone who is obviously an Actor, Director, Writer, etc...are you able to step away from all that behind the scene knowledge and enjoy television and movies as entertainment? And you have probably answered this question before, but do you feel as though you were typecast ? I have always been saddened to hear stories of actors who have had very recognizable roles, but then would not get many chances to branch out and do other parts. Thank you for your time, Merry Christmas to all

I can be just an audience and enjoy watching a show. Tougher when it’s one I’m in - but if I had no connection to it, I’m all audience unless something really distracts me. Yes, definitely type casting was an issue. We came out of a period drama into an era of night time soaps and glamor driven shows. My agents often heard, “we love her, she’s great, but she’s not right”. I went back to doing live theatre for many years.

Thank you so much for this channel. It has brought back many memories, and provided much insight into life on the set. I grew up with the Walton children (I am same age as Jon Walmsley's character, Jason). I always compared yall's life growing up in the Blue Ridge mountains to our own (family of 6 kids, and a live in grandmother) growing up in the Kiamichi mountains in SE Oklahoma. We spent most summers barefoot, and during the early seasons I noticed the kids spent a lot of time barefoot. My questions are: 1. Was being barefoot on set ever a problem? And 2. Which one of the kids spent the most time barefoot? My guess would be either Jim Bob, or Mary Ellen. Thanks again!!
