Do you think you could get an interview with the wonderful Lynn Hamilton, Judy? When the images of Verdie came up and I looked her up. 93 years young as of 2024.
Hi Judy, I want to thank you for making yourself so accessible here and sharing your insight into The Waltons and your related experiences in the industry. Your responsiveness to comments, too, is amazing! The Waltons is one of my very favourite series and your channel and all you do here is a wonderful gift. Thank you!
I also would love to see Lynn Hamilton and Hal Willams again . They were so wonderful on The Waltons . Lynn and Hal had great chemistry. Wonderful Q&A Judy👏🏻💕
Verde had so many WONDERFUL Black stories that tell the tale as well as if they were made today.. I am excited to think Lynn Verde Hamiliton is still with us. But do too many Joshes spoil the broth?
I met Joe Connelly years ago at The Walton's Museum in Schuyler. I asked him about his contract. He told me he was paid per episode with a guarantee of a certain number of episodes. He thought Ronnie Clare had a similar deal but wasn't sure. He said he loved his time on The Waltons & loved working with everyone especially Ralph, Richard, & Eric. His face really lit up while speaking about Eric, the song & dance act they formed, appearing at places together, etc. He said they used to meet for lunch occasionally & he just loved Eric. Oddly, he said he wasn't that fond of Ronnie Clare as she would try to steal scenes & he said things had to be her way & it drove him nuts. He was an interesting man & we had quite a conversation about his time as an actor & real estate.
Thank you for answering my question! I love the westerns from the 1960s/1970s and movies from the Golden Age. I recognize many of the WONDERFUL and legendary character actors from those in The Waltons. The Waltons excelled in this aspect too. 🎉❤
I always find it fascinating where everything was on the backlot for the show and how you'd never know that it was all in close proximity. Not only that, but the fact a lot of those locations and buildings were used for other places such as the school and church. I do feel the makers of The Waltons could certainly show todays production creators how it should be done. Thank you Judy for todays segment and best wishes to you from your loyal waltonian superfan in a mild England😉
Although the overhead (rental fees) for filming on the lot was no doubt steep, it did allow for a lot of advantages with so many resources close to hand.
After the Walton's went off the air and in between the reunions Ralph, Michael and Richard were still seen acting on stage, film and television but the rest of you only in just a few projects here and there but I'm really glad to see that you and the others are still doing well thanks Judy and keep the Walton's alive Thank You. 🇺🇲📺📺🇺🇲
I started watching the Waltons about five months ago and I’ve been stuck ever since, absolutely love that show!!Such a comforting show, I watch it every single day🩷🥰. I have a big family as well and it just reminds me exactly how I grew up between all the fights, laughs and good times with all my siblings😅💖.
Another round of good questions and interesting answers! Thanks, Judy! I noticed in The Easter Story, JB talked with Mama about possibly attending The University of Virginia! I wondered what made the writers (?) change to the fictional Boatwright U. With all the pet animals on the Walton's, I wondered if you had/have any pets beyond your horse(s)? Did The Walton's influence you to have a cat or dog or peacock? 😄 Olivia was shown to be an artist! I wondered if any of the cast are also graphic artists? For so many fans here, we are inspired by this or that episode or character of The Walton's. I wondered beyond The Walton's if you have any real or fictional characters/people/shows that inspire you? Well, happy April to you and Walton's everywhere! ❤
Not sure why the change was made from U of V to Boatwright. Maybe to avoid aspects of the real University. ie: it doesn’t look the same or something. Over the years I’ve also had dogs and cats as pets. My son had hamsters, a chinchilla, snakes and I think fish. No one in the cast is a graphic or fine artist. Not sure I have a standout show that inspired me.
Judy this is Kevin I'm glad that you pointed some things out to me and you know I just love the series still watch it and reruns and I really like it keep up so you keep up the good work and I'll and I'll get you know I was hoping that you could come to Portland Oregon sometime but I don't know when but I know I asked that before and you didn't know but I really enjoy we have a summer home up on the metolius river that we've had since 1941 and every time I'm up there I really it's like country I really like it up there and I really enjoy being up there reminds me of you of the Walton series and the way our family used to be it's not close knit as it used to be anyway you take good care and I'll catch you down life's highway.
Thankyou Judy for sharing how the Waltons episodes were filmed.I always loved the way Waltons episodes were filmed. The shows seemed like in real life happenings.Til this day, I still look forward to watching the Waltons shows.
My husband has just bought me a complete box set plus movies to watch. Wish little house wd do the same sort of utube thing you do as your programs are so interesting
I really enjoyed seeing the map. It really helped to visualize where things are. I've never been to Hollywood so I really have no concept of how it works. I never really thought about the construction of the sound stage and just assumed the cameras were in the room of the house. Not knowing that steps didn't really go anywhere and essentially you worked in a doll house surprised me. I guess I really thought the sound stage would literally be a house cut in half or a house without it's facade. They call it a sound stage but doesn't the sound get added later in the editing phase?
Glad you found this helpful. No, all the dialogue is recorded live while filming. Post production sound editing is to put it all together seamlessly, eliminate unwanted sounds, level and balance sound, add extra sound effects such as the screen door squeaking, doors closing, birds, dog barks, etc. As well as the music being added.
Hello Judy…I so enjoy your channel. I have download the majority of the series of the Walton’s. I watch last night the The Quilting…love it At the end I could hear your beautiful voice singing. Thank you💕
Judy, I have been to the exterior of the Burbank (Warner Bros. Studio). It looks like the jungle set where the house was must have been at the back. There was a large hill behind the studio--obviously a part of the San Gabriel Mountains. I believe the directors shot through the trees and made that hill Waltons Mountain. Would you agree?
There were certainly many shots of that small mountain that were used at times. As for what was identified as the larger scope of Waltons Mountain shown during the opening narration - was more typically shots from Frazier Park “B” roll.
I was so happy when i toured the Warner brother's Studio in 2003 I got to visit a lot of the places I recognized from the Waltons.. I couldn't believe they actually stapled orange leaves to the trees to give the impression of Fall season for a Gilmore Girls episode. They were also filming Looney Tunes back in action with Brendan Frasier and our tour cart driver was actually in that film .
Hi Judy, these were great questions and you did such a good job answering them - as always. Love your channel. One question. I think I need a better understanding of what an assistant director does. I thought they just did the schedules for the main director and shot secondary scenes such as a car driving down a road. But apparently they deal with extras as well. What is the list of duties? Second question: Continuing on that reasoning, when can an assistant director become a director? Is it the number of hours they put in or is it because of a lucky break? Third: How does one become an assistant director in the first place? Do you always start as an assistant director? Finally, a follow up to your statement about chords in a scale. You are ALMOST right. In any major scale, the 1st (root), the 4th (subdominant) and the 5th (dominant) are all major chords. The 2nd, 3rd, 6th are minor and the 7th is what's called a half diminished chord (which nobody uses). Generally, in 4/4 time you have a 4 chord progression (each chord playing for 4 beats). Chords are called out based on position so a I, V, VI, IV would be (in the C scale, C, G, F, am). Generally you always have a minor chord in the progression but honestly it varies. You could do I, II, V, VI (C, d minor, G, A minor) as well. Chord progressions are not copyrighted so you can copy somebody else's chord progressions no problem. Generally, in pop you don't do the I, IV, V progression only since it's all major chords and it gets dull listening to it. A minor breaks the expectations and makes the sound more interesting. Have a great weekend!
Will the Waltons come back on. I notice When Calls the heart is on at 8pm now. I am glad I have many Walton episodes recorded but I hope they bring it back soon.❤
Hey Judy, I enjoy your channel! You mentioned that when you would shoot several scenes during the day at different locations, makeup trailers, lightening, etc. would also move to each location. Was there coordination with other WB shows who might have been using the same exterior locations or filming at the same time?
Yes, that would often happen when we were shooting at the house exterior on the backlot and other shows were in the jungle area near the pond, or further along where the church or Rockfisth area was. The Assistant directors would need to coordinate together.
I just have one question, and I think you'll agree how important this is......"Where is John-Boy's typewriter these days? This series could probably feature a museum of antiquities.
JUDY, your post #80 is right next to a Tacy Lawrence offering singing Time Marches On. Love this. Not thought or heard of it years so THANK YOU! The Ironing Board Blues of its generation.
Do you think you could interview Robert Wightman? I would love to hear his perspective of joining the cast mid series and taking on such an iconic character.
I'm so upset, the Waltons are no longer on hallmark..any one know where there being televised on? So thankful I have the whole series on DVD..I love hearing ur input on behind the scenes..
Here we are again., we are fortunate recipients of your lifetime of television, movies, and live theater hearing these presentation are so easy on the eyes and ears. I'm curious if you are able to make any financial gains from the effort you've been putting into your productions here ? In the beginning there were never any commercials now they seem to happen more often. Perhaps a good thing. Let's hope the answer is yes. Can't recall if you discussed royalists you received from your wonderful days on the Walton's, my friend showed me his check from a part he did on MASH it's not not much but the checks keep coming. : )
So glad you are enjoying all of these. Residuals for older shows like ours on cable channels are quite minimal, but nice they continue as long as the show continues to run on channels. As for RU-vid it seems to vary greatly. I’m not sure why. I think the longer the segments would be why there might be additional ads.
@@judynorton2598 thank you, always there with a good answer. Yes your a certified natural at doing your presentations, very enjoyable. You've come a long way baby ! I'm guessing you weren't a smoker back in the day when so many of us were ? Glad those days are over. : )
Dear Judy, I'd like everyone to know that MeTV airs the credits in full for their shows. MeTV airs The Waltons Monday - Friday in the afternoon. I don't know if they do more editing for more ads, but they do not edit the credits. I know that in M*A*S*H "Margaret's Marriage" they showed an end scene that I hadn't seen since it originally aired in 1977. In most syndicated airings, the end is when Margaret has left in a chopper with her new husband, with Frank standing and saying, "Bye, Margaret." There is a later scene in the Swamp with Frank, BJ, Hawkeye, and Col. Potter that originally ended the episode. MeTV includes this scene in the Swamp. Fun fact (at least in my opinion): in this Swamp scene, Frank Burns utters his last line on M*A*S*H, "I dunno. I just felt like grabbing a cold shower."
Good to know. Thank you! I had the pleasure of working with Larry Linville (Frank Burns) for a couple of months in a stage play. Really enjoyed his company.
Judy, I asked you before about this, but could you add some explanation on one of your videos about over dubbing dialog whenever they did do it? Thanks Judy🌹🌹🌹Love all your videos with this interesting information 🌹❤️🌹
Speaking of getting cut out of a scene: Several years ago Corbin Bernsen filmed a movie (Christian Mingle) here in Turlock Calif, and I got to be one of the extras. The scene I was in was a church scene. I was sitting in the back row with the camera filming from behind us. I was so looking forward to seeing myself in the movie (does that sound vain?). But.... the frame ended at the woman who was sitting beside me. You couldn't see me at all. I even watched the bonus features, but I was nowhere to be seen. However, I still got my name in the credits.
I watched a Waltons episode yesterday with my wife Kathy entitled The burnout. In this episode, the house gets severely damaged by 🔥 fire. Two of the scenes that I really enjoyed from this episode was Olivia's reaction to John boy A.K.A. Richard Thomas smoking a pipe, and another scene where part of the family has to sleep outside in a tent ⛺️ in the pouring rain 🌧 and Mary Ellen decides to open up an umbrella 🌂 inside the leaking tent. Loved these 2 scenes. Also, would like to know where you grew up as a child? and what kind of work did you parents do? Thanks Judy.
Glad you enjoyed The Burnout. I grew up in Los Angeles. My father drove a gasoline truck delivering the gas to gas stations and refilling their tanks. My mom was a stay at home mom until my parent’s divorced then she worked retail at a dept store. Regular folks :)
This might have been asked (and it might have been me who asked initially), but in regards to casting, that after The Waltons, did you find that if you got a cast for a certain role that was similar to Mary Ellen? Did you have say in whether or not you took the role or not? Also, since you said “certain roles” were cast based on availability of certain actors and characters, did it happen that a certain character got recast in a later season hard with the change, or was it far enough removed from the last time that it was okay to deal with it? (Sheriff Bridges in ‘The Homecoming’ being one actor then switching to the recurring actor in the series….one of the other actors in the homecoming coming back as the boxer in the other episode)
Maybe she did but I never saw her cast as another Mary Ellen type. She was typecast as that type of Mary Ellen Walton at the very least. She got typecast as Mary Ellen Walton. Too bad they could not have made a Show for her in the role as the Adult Mary Ellen but that may have been hard to do.She has a beautiful voice and other talents.
I did get cast in a number of similar type roles on stage, but also had the chance to do some other types. As for television after a number of years away from television, I found myself playing a lot of “professional” type roles - doctors, lawyers, coroner etc. As for bringing back actors in different roles over the seasons, I think it would be that it was considered enough time had passed that the audience wouldn’t immediately think it was the same character they had played before. Of course now reruns allow binge watching I think viewers connect the dots more :)
Hello Judy!! I always enjoy learning about filming and where everything is located. I hope I can tour WB someday to see where everything was located. My son took me to Paramount for a surprise tour I wish I could have gotten to where the Walton's were filmed. Thank you for always making my week have a great weekend!!🥰
I’m sure you would have fun with the Warner Bros tour. Sadly the backlot is all gone and is now offices and parking lots, but Midwest St and other areas are still there.
Did they ever film 2 episodes or parts of, at the same time? Just watched "The Hostage" with Mary Wickes. Another great guest star. And Fran Ryan as Eula Mae. Another character actor we have seen all our lives.
Judy,I just watched The Revel. I know you've said that the cast weren't aware that it would be the last episode. There were a few scenes early on that almost seemed to be wrapping things up. I'm wondering if you went back and put scenes in that would've kind of made an ending. It's always sad to watch that last program.
I think over the last couple of seasons there were endings of a sort almost as if “in case” it was the last, so maybe I just thought “we’ve been there before but come back, so who knows”.
Thanks Judy, I have a couple of questions for you. The first is why do you refer to Baldwin sisters, the Godseys,Sheriff Bridges, Yancy Tucker and others as guest actors? To me they were regulars. Also were any well known actors they wanted for a guest role who either wasn't available or refused to appear on the show? Has always take care , stay safe and God Bless.
@@m.e.d.7997 I don't buy that. They had a regular recurring role on the show and were a major part in many of the story lines throughout the 9 year run of the show and in the six movie specials. They may not have been main characters but they were regular characters.
We actually would refer to them as “recurring characters” in that they weren’t in every episode, but the actors came back as the same character in various episodes. I imagine there were actors that were asked about doing episodes that passed on it for some reason. Not available, not interested…
Love listening to your explanation of how The Watson's was made. Will you talk about Ed Hebner and if any of his family are still living? Did the Watsons influence your growing?
Did you mean Earl Hamner? The cast talked about him for a tribute in VA. Here is that link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fvOvgssPDms.html I also spoke a bit about him in another segment: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8BRlPoYcfzA.html He does still have family living - including his children. I spoke with his son Scott recently and will be following up soon. Here is the initial segment: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-obtVyOG7GG0.html
Thanks for another great video Judy! I enjoy all your videos but especially enjoy when you interview an actor who made an appearance on The Waltons. Have you ever reached out to Jonathan Frakes to see if he would be willing to appear on your channel? I've seen him on some other youtube vlogs and he makes for a fun and interesting interview. I'd love to hear about his experience filming The Waltons as a young and aspiring actor. Thanks!
Thanks Judy I love ask Judy! Any thoughts on the 50th Anniversary of Little House on the Prairie out in Simi Valley last weekend some(?) of the cast in their panel Q&A seemed to knock the Walton's as they had over 20,000 come for their 50th and the Walton's did not? Besides Charlotte Stewart was their much actor crossover?
I think they had a whole city behind creating that 50th - with the recreation of the set facades. Hard to compete with :). I’m glad it was a huge success for all - the fans, the cast and the organizers.
Would they put the Walton series on Blu-ray DVD with commentary from all of you that would be cool for the 60th anniversary and put gag reel and bloopers.
Hey Judy all the food that y'all ate on the Waltons looks so good i was wondering do you prepare and eat any of those dishes that you ate on the set Maybe something that you really liked? Thanks and God bless.
Welcome! So glad you have found my channel. Hope you enjoy the videos. Here is a link to an early segment I did talking about the sets that were used for the house, which was not a real one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--qPaJzsUcFA.html
Interesting it strikes you that way. It’s a very interactive comment section and seems to attract folks who have been long time fans of The Waltons and want to share their thoughts and questions about the show. It’s meant to be uplifting and positive. We have enough examples of negativity - so why not be nice to each other.
It seemed weird when Olivia went to AZ because we never saw her again as I recall. I know she was working on Nurses but it seemed so abrupt to just only get a phone call with no visual of her. Couldn't the agree on a couple appearances or did the other show contract prevent her from reappearing?
I’m not sure how all that worked, but I do know Michael moved to NY and was living there and filming Nurse there. When Mary Ellen is supposed to go see her mom in AZ in Mother’s Day on Waltons Mountain, they sent me to NY to film me scenes there on the set of Nurse.
Another great apisode! Just wanted to know if any of the Waltons did their own stunts. If so were their any injuries? Also during the interior shots did any walls collapse or chairs break, lights blew, etc while the scenes were being filmed? Thanks ❤ your show
Hi Judy. We see where Richard and Ralph directed some episodes, but were you or any other women actresses offered the opportunity to direct so you might have a bit of creative control as well sometimes? Love your channel! ❤
Did the cast get to see the finished episodes before they aired? I’m sure filming out of sequence was common and actors would wonder why it looked the way it aired.
I believe I did answer your question is an Ask Judy segment :). I won’t make you go search for it… ha ha. I don’t totally remember what I said in that segment, but I would say staying focused on priorities, asking more questions from those amazing cast and crew we worked with over the seasons, gathering more contacts and staying in touch with people, working to be less self-absorbed as a teenager :)
I love the Waltons and I really like this channel you’re very good. I just have a question about what your thoughts are in terms of the writing on the show? I really enjoyed the Waltons when Richard, Thomas and Michael Vernon more of the show I didn’t feel that it really kind of turned a little bit once they left the show. And I’m also wondering how you felt when they came back to the character of Curtis and had him still be alive? I thought that was a really odd show and I don’t know if they need to have one to talk about that because it just didn’t seemto go with the flow when it comes to the theme of the show. Anyway, just wanted to get your thoughts?
Over the seasons, I believe we all had our favorite and less favorite episodes. Overall I think the caliber of writing was really strong and Earl oversaw it throughout. Evolving a show and keeping it fresh and engaging is an ongoing challenge, especially when cast changes, leaves, children grow up etc. I think the consensus is the Curt returns episode was odd to most of us.
