The Waltons - Corabeth (Ronnie Claire Edwards) joins the cast and marries Ike Godsey (Joe Conley).
It's a bumpy road to the altar. Corabeth disrupts the Walton house when she arrives unannounced and then seems disinclined to move on. Grandma (Ellen Corby) suspects trouble from the start. The Baldwin sisters (Helen Kleeb & Mary Jackson) are invited for tea without telling Olivia (Michael Learned). John Boy (Richard Thomas) is displaced from his room for the unforeseeable future. John (Ralph Waite) plays matchmaker for Ike & Corabeth.

I feel as if people forget or don't realize Cora Beth was a Walton. I'm glad you explained her familial connection. I felt bad for Cora Beth when her dance studio didn't succeed, but I believe she found success as a realtor. The Waltons was probably one of the first family shows to have episodes on alcoholism/substance abuse.

Thankyou Judy for another great behind the scenes story The Matchmaker. Love how CoraBeth's transformation from a sow's ear to a silk purse with her hairstyle and wardrobe especially during the 1940 episodes. Her acting especially when she played her own twin sister was exceptional. Playing two polar opposite of the same coin.

You hit the nail on the head with Ike and Corabeth. Ike just wanted to solved his loneliness problem, Corabeth did the same thing. She figured Ike would give her what she wanted and she would also be close to family. I liked how Corabeth acted more richer than she and Ike actually were. Glad they settled and seemed to be happy together.

Thank you so much for this Judy...I had almost forgotten this episode...beautiful script by John McGreevey and outstanding performances all around...it was another one of those big episodes, lots of sets, lots of props, lots of cast. I marvel at the fact we were able to do it...and oh yes, Ronnie Claire, dear dear Ronnie Claire...I don't recall how she was cast, or who discovered her...but she was brilliant! As we said, "Ronnie Claire was Corabeth and Corabeth was Ronnie Claire" RCE purchased the Bullock (Bullock Stores) Mansion on the hill in the Los Feliz section of LA and hosted "Dinner Soires" there on weekends...I remember like it was yesterday how Ronnie Claire would agonize about who sat where at the dinner table....I can see her now placing the name cards in each place, stepping back in deep thought and then re-arranging them all again...She was brilliant at who sat next to who and who sat across...actually, these 'soires' really were Ronnie Claire's way of matching up her guests.....you never knew who'd be attending ...I made many friends from those get-togethers. And about that line, so perfectly delivered, brilliantly timed..."Mr. Godsey asked me to marry him --- and I said Yes!!! When Jack said "Print" Ronnie Claire came over to me and said ""Was that okay?" Oh my gosh, I hugged her. There was a part of her that needed to be assured, just like Corabeth Godsey". Looking at all those friends all of us in the family, I felt a tugging at my heart, a little bit of sadness...they are mostly gone, cast and crew....but oh, look at the wonderful creation they left behind.

What a classic! We all ❤️ Corabeth. I can tell from your descriptions in all of your videos that you adored Ronnie Claire. I think what made the Godseys special was that we felt comfortable with the members of the Walton family, just like we do our own family. It's those outside, however, that are more intriguing. Therefore, those characters, as certainly she accomplished, are so much fun to watch!

I love how sweetly you related The Matchmakers and shared significant moments of the story with film clips! I wonder if Ronnie Clair Edwards thought to say, "And I said, 'Yes,'" on her own or did the director coach her! It certainly was a perfect and memorable reading of the line for sure! As you indicated, there was a lot of foreshadowing for the direction Cora Beth's character would evolve! I like that we could see multifacets of Ike's character too. In later episodes with Amy and when Cora Beth was having troubles, Ike showed much depth of character, a real sweetheart, but not milk toast. I think 'MaryEllen' was right on the mark with that blue garter from Grandma of all people! 😅. This was a real treat today! Thank you, Judy! Hope you and Walton's everywhere enjoy a colorful and lovely Autumn🍃🍂🍁🪶🧡

Probably the hardest role to play in recurring episode of a long- lived show is the person that everyone loves, not to hate, but to be uncomfortable when he or she is around. You don't really see her as a villain, just someone you'd rather avoid. And there are few people that can pull that off, but two of the best were Ronnie and Larry Linville of MASH. So RIP Ronnie and thank you for deliciously playing 'the woman you'd wish you had left behind". And to you too Joe Conley for playing the foil. God bless you both.

Love The Matchmakers.❤️ My favorite part is when Ike, Corabeth, John and Olivia are in the fancy French restaurant. Things are so awkward between Ike and Corabeth, lol. She won’t respond to him at all, she hardly talks to him, poor Ike, he’s trying so hard. He keeps quoting George Bernard Shaw and poetry, she says who? lol…. John and Olivia are having a great time, dancing, talking and laughing. Beautiful restaurant and ambience. Then Corabeth stares longingly at John and Olivia dancing, and she says forlornly, “why are some people so lucky”?? I also love the other story, where John Boy is such a great big brother to Erin, and tells her she’s pretty, and takes her to get her picture taken. He was trying to help her feel better about herself. What a sweet thing for him to do!!❤️. Today is my birthday!! September 19th!!❤️❤️

Ronnie Claire Edwards actually had an auto biography .. while a quick read and not all about the Walton’s .. she spent enough time discussing her character and how she developed her role through those years.. she made it clear a wonderful experience.. she did say professionally had an issue with one peer and read on yiur own to understand. The best scene in the last two seasons of the show was when Jim bob changed Cora Beth’s tire.. a tear jerker.

Thanks for showing this. I always defer to this episode saying Corabeth was a meek, sniveling person when she first arrived on the scene. However, you are right, when she first sauntered in and even boxed up John Boys things, that was aking to who she really is deep down. I guess I remembered the part most when she was crying and Olivia talks to her in the room. That was the perfect interpretation that Corabeth liked to put on airs, but you are right again, one would think she would have known Shaw. Thank you so much for explaining this episode splendidly.

The personalities of Ike and Corabeth were vastly different, they didn't seem to share the closeness that we saw with John and Olivia. Hello Judy, Thank you for this classic, humorous episode! I like the analysis you gave of CoraBeth's character; how there were two sides to her character, and how she evolved over time. I would say the same applied to Mary Ellen. However, she became sweeter and softer as she got older, and maybe in her case, having to care for a husband and child, also figured into it?

I loved how Grandma reacted to her arriving at the house and doing absolutely nothing to help out , etc. You did your usual thorough and interesting job. Thanks again for letting us know who the guest actors were. Did you ever think of doing a separate show highlighting the lives and careers of some of the guest stars ? Segments on Lynn Hamilton, Mere Earle, John Crawford, Lynn Carlin etc. Like a Spotlight on a certain guest actor and kind of review their lives and careers . Sort of like when Biography used to be on. Well its just an idea but I for one would enjoy that. I remember when we went to look at the first flat screen TVs. The salesman told us that the old TV shows like The Waltons would appear stretched out some because the old shows were made for the old square screen TVs. So, we ended up with a large bulky square TV for some time. - This episode always make me think the much later episode where Corabeth comes out with the lovely sleeveless white dress with the cherry print on it. And she tells Ike, "Don't you remember this dress? It was the one I had on when we met, or when we first went out together." - No way, LOL.

The character of Cora Beth reminds me of Blanche Dubois from Streetcar Named Desire a bit though CB is much more conservative in behaviour. Both put on airs, and wound up caring for elderly relatives and perhaps fearing the opportunity for love has passed them by. Also, marrying later in life for CoraBeth & Ike being somewhat akin to Blanche & Mitch in Streetcar. A funny episode and a good watch. Thanks again!

Hi Judy, Thank you for this review of one of my favourite, funny episodes. Well done! I still watch it today,50+ years later, and still find it hysterical! What I love in the beginning scene,is John Boy's offering a peppermint to MaryEllen, to 'sweeten her disposition'. This following Mary Ellen's reaction to mama adjusting her dress, that 'it's no use mama, it's just going to look made over'. This moment highlighted Mary Ellen's more 'spicy' character, also great writing But, she did thank John Boy for the candy. She had a sweet side as well. This is why she was,to me, such an interesting character. And she evolved over the years, too. Do you have any thoughts,or recollections?

It was interesting to look back at this episode and see how much Cora Beth's style and character changed over the seasons becoming increasingly more "frou-frou". (particularly her hair). I'm on season 8 of my boxed set so to look back at her reserved plainess here really emphasizes her growth into the grand lady of her "delusions". Kudos to the writers. Ms.Edwards must have had a ball playing her. It certainly seems it! Thanks Judy!✌️💖

Great introduction of Cora Beth. I always wondered why, when every time JohnBoy got kicked out of his room he has to sleep in the barn? Can’t he sleep in his brothers’ room on the floor or on the couch?

Good recap of The Matchmaker. I was just curious about the wedding. Do you know if there was more to the wedding and it was just cut or was the wedding written and filmed as shown? It just seems odd that John Ritter was there but not used. The whole cast was there as well. Keep up the good work.

I believe Jack Shea mostly went to directing episodes of "The Jeffersons" after he directed his last Waltons episode
