@@BeanieScooter Or as Miss Corby herself put it to Mr. Hamner, she volunteered to be the show's lemon to complete their lemonade. BTW, Mr. Hamner had originally modeled Grandma on both of his own already deceased grandmothers NOT on his then-living mother Doris Giannini Hamner. Of course, Mr. Hamner also admitted Will Geer played a toned down version of HIMSELF instead of Mr. Hamner's actual grandfathers but the two performers sure helped make the show!

Bottom line,it takes talent and ability to pull these things off! The ability to make these characters come to life while putting a part of yourself yet the character is nothing like the actor/actress that portrays these characters. You child actors were tops and yes, there was that perfect balance between what's really going on (wiping your nose because you're in a dusty barn) . I totally agree, you all were perfectly cast!! Sorry for the rambling, Judy! Excellent video as always!

Another great interview. I also appreciate what Debbie brought out in her questions & hearing more about her life, careers and expanding devotion to protecting animals. (I hope Debbie can gain adoptive families & donations by showing daily life at the shelter, online … It seems to help such lifesaving missions.) Yes, The Waltons kids’ acting was so good it seems it was often taken for granted. The points you two share about being called to set, switching gears in the midst of class work & the casting being potentially distinguished by movie standards (for The Homecoming) are fascinating to consider. They add depth to my understanding from a distance of the production we all love. Thank you both for your work & your love of building understanding, for all the insights ~& recipes! :). Out of the two episodes that Deborah appeared in, Shivaree was my favourite on account of the comedy present in that episode. I watched an interview that Jon Walmsley gave a few years ago and in that interview, Jon also stated the children in the show just goofed around and went into the scenes to do their bit and went out of the scene to goof around again quite seamlessly - only true professional actors can do that which you all were! Thank you Judy for a wonderful segment and best wishes to you from your waltonian superfan in a milder but dull England😉

This was a nice way to wrap this interview. I love what her third act is going to be. I think it was because of the deep Depression that both my parents watched the show with us youngsters. As I said before, they lived through the Depression. This was one of the few tv shows which they could relate to. I agree with her that the timing was spot on in this country for the show. The family also loved Little House on the Prairie, too; although, for different reasons. I realized that the film Spencer’s Mountain was the only film my whole family saw together in a movie theatre. What an awesome piece of work you are doing with these retrospectives of the Walton’s. Thanks, Judy. Hope your holiday was spectacular.

WOAH I love Professor White's twist at the end of retiring from teaching to become a caretaker for senior pets in a less urban area! Since Young Olivia found her purpose in life (after her young husband's death) via nursing newborn kittens, it seems apt that Professor White now is doing the same with other four legged companions AND she seems to have remarried happily after her bad 1st marriage so maybe we could imagine Young Olivia did the same!

Deborah had a great point (well, among many!) -- my parents were the age of the youngest of the Walton children, and had grown up during the ends of the depression and then World War II -- and they could tell my sister and I many stories of that time in their lives, but watching The Waltons really made it "real" for us. So it does make a difference in how the show "linked" to the audience....

For Deborah, I understand what it’s like if someone has issues trying to take care of a pet. It’s why people are advised to not buy, or give, a pet on a whim. One of my cousins decided to give my uncle a dog, around the time my aunt died (at age 68). But my uncle was in his 70s, and he ended up having to deal with the dog often straying into a new neighbor’s yard. He was not prepared to fully care for the dog. Don’t know if my cousin had to take the dog back, when my uncle died, 4 years later. And a friend’s mom chose to get a dog, sometime after my friend’s father died. But the mom ended up constantly having my friend take care of the dog, because of her age and health issues. My friend had to be ready to go home and retrieve the dog and take him wherever he was going, or was. I can only wonder how many times he was told that he could not take it, somewhere. He would later call it “my dog”, not “my mom’s dog”. It appeared to be more of a chore, caring for it. It might have been, later on, given away or taken to a shelter. I shared that story with my dad, and said that I would have to dissuade him, if he ever thought about getting a dog, after my mom died, as I could not step in, at a moment’s notice, to care for the dog. Dad, who was in his 80s, assured me, not to worry. We both knew it would not have worked out.

Yes. My parents were older and grew up during the depression. So, I'm sure there were a lot of things on the show that brought back memories of their childhood. Unlike the remake Christmas and Thanksgiving shows that didn't really work on getting the actors to seem like believable Depression era characters.

Hi Judy! Yay finally a part 3 with Debbie I loved this so much :) I hope that you and the whole Walton’s cast had a very merry Christmas and have a happy new year! ❤ I want to tell you I got a Goodnight Johnboy: The Walton’s memory book and an autographed Walton’s poster with mostly everyone’s signatures on it including yours for Christmas and I love it all so much! I also got a squishmallow I named after Calico the cat from The Loss episode :) And I hope you have a wonderful day :) Love, Jamie - huge Walton’s fan ✨

I hope you both had a wonderful Christmas 🎄 I always watch the Walton's and I know you have kept in touch with many others have you been in touch with Cousin Cora from the Dust Bowl Cousins and is it true she is an LA attorney now? You are so right about the casting you all look like real siblings and like you said Earl knew his family well and you can see that. Sadly the CW version has not captured that at all no one really looks related. Thank you both so much for sharing your memories! Much Love! Kathy 💞

Oh, Part 3 with more raves for The Waltons from young Livy, Deborah White! How awesome is the great James Robert in THE GREAT MOTORCYCLE RACE! Especially in scenes with his fantabulous mother Olivia Walton. "I am so proud of you, James Robert", she beams her beautiful smile. "Jim will do just fine, mama" says Jim Bob, not too old to secretly like a hug from his mother. How old is Jim Bob here? Jim Bob can really warm the audiences heart out in TV land if we let him!

Thank you, Judy, for even more in-depth talk with Deborah.......very lovely! I'm glad you exended your talk with her to bring to us!❤ And thank you, Deborah, for being so genuine......I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 parts of the interview. I am originally from upstate NY and my mom and siblings still live there, in Schenectady........I looked up your sanctuary and Castleton-on-Hudson is only 25 miles from them! My mom is going to be 87 in a few months and it is hard to think of things to get her anymore - I think the perfect birthday gift will be a donation to the sanctuary! She lost one of her dogs this past year and her other dog is on the decline and will not last much longer....so it will be a way to honor her love for them. Best of luck to you in your "third act!" (And who knows, maybe someday when you live in NY full-time, I will meet up with you when I visit my family!)

Just rewatched The (original) Homecoming. In my second marriage, my ex and I had 8 kids between us! Four sons from her first marriage, two daughters from my first marriage and two daughters together. And we went through some tough times -- I recognize in the writing and acting of The Homecoming the stress coming out in looks, and voices, and jumping to conclusions -- which anchors that movie in the reality of stressful family life. Not a perfect family by a long shot -- but really who wants to see a perfect family during Christmas??? We all are imperfect in our own ways -- personally and in our families -- how awesome it is to see that being so is fine, normal and survivable. You all made it magic back then and continued into the TV series. I give props to the "reboot" of The Homecoming, but it was a little too "squeaky clean" and without conflict for me to relate -- or maybe I'm just too old and stuck in my "Walton's" ways. Thank you so much Judy -- and the rest of the cast/crew/writers -- for bringing moments of family reality and struggle into our homes every week, to help us realize that it's OK not to be perfect. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

Deborahs statement about the generation who lived through the depression were the ones who really related to the show is so true. It was my Grandparents who first stared watching The Waltons and it quickly became must see tv for the entire family every Thursday night. Beyond Earl’s mom being alive at the time and wanting to cast her in the best light l had experienced the same thing with my Dad whose mother passed away way before l came around, but whenever l asked any questions about her , you would I’d thought she was mother Mary 😂lol! My point is that, like Earl, my father was born in 1920 and was a product of the depression era and I just believe that was true of many people who were born way back then. People went to church, as well and knew the Ten Commandments were it says to always honor your mother and father. I just think they were brought up to believe that way, which is lovely really ❤😊 Mrs. Putnam again
