I always loved Tom Bower as Curt and thought they should've stayed married. When he wanted a raise on the show, they should've at least discussed it instead of sending him to Pearl Harbor and killing him off!!!
@Eye. stupid Benny Spy Agree. He looked too old for Mary Ellen as the show went forward. I did not know he wanted more money. I thought they realized he was a bad fit and let him go.
The money issue isn't very surprising actually. Several years ago, I read a book where the actors who played the older children on The Waltons were telling about making the show. I believe it was one of the boys who admitted (or it might have been from the actress who played Erin, in her book) that once they made the acquaintance of Willie Ames, who did a guest spot on The Waltons, then returned to the show that he was doing for another company ("Eight Is Enough"?) and they later became good friends, in conversations with each other, "The Waltons" kids discovered from the kids on the other show that their salaries from Lorimar were puny and peanut sized in comparison with what the company Willie Ames' employer was paying THEM for (I think) doing the show, "Eight Is Enough." Plus, their hours were a lot better too. Lorimar wasn't generally known far and wide for their generous contracts.
I think THIS is how you get married.😊 _Simply._ Surrounded by loved ones. And FAST, lol. Nowadays, ppl spend a fortune, invite ppl they haven’t seen in decades and take up an entire day-sometimes more!!- just to say “I do” (err... until I don’t anymore”) Give me a small, simple ceremony any day😌
in time - I know. Rather than spend all that money on the wedding, I'd rather the money go on the honeymoon our home. - And Mary Ellen looks so beautiful, just like a princess. The dress is just beautiful.
@in time So true. Hearing about people canceling their weddings because of covid all i thought was get married in a small simple ceremony in front of a priest or judge now and have your celebration party later. I know it was a unique unprecedented time but for so many to put their lives on hold for another year made me wonder what they wanted more, a spouse or a party, not to mention debt.
I hated how the writers had him fake his death and let her mourn him. They should have left him as dying on Pearl Harbor. I did like them together though.
I understand your sentiment, but I do wish Tom Bower (the original Curt) would have played the injured Curt Mary Ellen eventually met in a later episode.
@Stephen Poole- I share your sentiment regarding Tom Bower's Curt. The other actor playing that role, one time, didn't do justice to the original character- and the impact on Mary Ellen wasn't nearly what it would have been. This guy was literally and figuratively a complete stranger to her. I feel the same way about the actor who played John- Boy after Richard Thomas left. They never should have replaced him.
This was one of my favorite episodes. Mary Ellen and Dr. Willard were meant for each other. I did not like how the writers had him come back as a different actor after Pearl Harbor though.
I totally agree! Shucks, I could feel that chemistry between them. The show really blew it when they killed Curt off and then revived him as a different character and actor.
I hated that he died at Pearl Harbor, then ended up alive later on in Florida and became an asshole. The show would not have suffered if Curt had stayed home and never been drafted. He and Mary Ellen could have had a lot of adventures as doctor and nurse.
IKR They took Curt away, put Mary Ellen back in the family house and she wasn't doing much of anything. Every once in awhile she popped up at the hospital or came down the stairs at the house with John Curtis on her hip, and that was about it. 😃
Tom Bower (Curt) asked for a raise ~ and they booted him. I also read the child actors/actresses from the show found out that children with “Eight Is Enough” cast were being paid more than The Waltons cast.
I loved them as a couple! In the Tempest it just was so out of character for Curt! Not believable. But of all the Walton kids, Mary Ellen would be the best to handle it, as she did!
I would have that at my wedding ' wherever thou goest, I shall go, and your people shall be my people'.. book of Ruth, I think . If anyone ever asks me to marry them. Mary Ellen and I could be twins, we are so much alike.
I never liked the actor that played her husband. In reality he is 20 years older than her. There never seemed to be any chemistry between the 2 And he seemed to be so Stern and with hardly any personality. They should have chosen a different actor to play her husband.
I am 54 years old and never watched a single episode of The Waltons growing up. My husband and I just started watching on streaming and it’s so comforting. 2023 and this show still holds up.
Mary Ellen, reminds me, so much of my sister, Brenda. My sister, has the same fire, compassion, and was the ultimate tomboy. We are, both married with children and my love for her has only gotten stronger. We have, hurt each other like sisters do, but in my own dumb way I only wanted the best for her. Her health, has not been good over the past couple years and I worry about her daily. Please God, let her know, that I love her and will ALWAYS love her. Please watch, over her always and keep her safe.
It was most appropriate that Mary Ellen & Kurt’s wedding took place at the site of the first Walton homestead. In that way the generations of the 1st Waltons could take part in spirit.
Yikes! Tomorrow (September 11) is the 10th anniversary of the passing of the wonderful John Ritter. Reading about his sudden passing still makes my eyes mist.
Mary Ellen, reminds me so much of my sister, Brenda both were so feisty. I can't, imagine my life without her. Thank you, God, for giving me the best sister in the entire world I love her more than anything in this world.
@Barbara Wagner. I had a beautiful sister Barbara who I buried this past June. She was 53 years old. We had been through hell as children and growing up. I never cried as much the night she died, I lost a big piece of myself that night. Eternal Rest Grant unto Dear Carlisa Oh Lord and Let Thy Perpetual Light Shine Upon her. Amen.
@@danacaro-herman3530 Dana, I am so sorry to hear of your sister's passing. I just lost, my beloved, husband, this past June. My only sister, Brenda, did not even pick up a phone to call me and we haven't spoken in over a year. She, always meant the world to me. I can only wish I meant something to her. I will always love her with all of my heart and wish her only good. However, this time she is out of my life for good. She, has caused me enough pain in my life and it's time for me to move on. You, were very lucky to have a sister that loved you and obviously you loved her. I only wish, I had that with her. Again, I am very sorry for your loss. May God, bring you peace.
@@barbarawagner5938 Dear Barbara I'm so sorry over the loss of your beloved husband. Life sure hasn't been easy. I hope you had many loving years together. God bless you hun. With love and prayers. Dana ❤️🙏
@@danacaro-herman3530 thank you, Dana. Know, that you will be in my prayers. Cherish, each memory with her and she will always be with you in your heart. May God bless you always.
Love that final episode...it was beautiful...id love my family to bring like that...where going home and sleeping in my own room at times...feeling like a child again...my own personal sacuary....
@@effdonahue6595 Me too! I enjoy watching The Three's Company. I Love Lucy is my favorite show as well! Recently I have been watching a lot of Western TV shows. The heroes in High Chaparral and the Virginian and Bonanza have become my family now!
By season 9 it wassss starting to look siily with all those grown "kids" still living in the house. I mean some were married, had kids, and their own businesses, but were still in the house. I understand not leaving the Mountain, but can they at least move out the damn house? 😃
I laughed at everyone's facial expressions when Erin said she saw Mary Ellen kissing Curt. She looked so guilty then in the next scene she is marrying Curt. Cute.
I love the Walton's been watching them since the 70's plus the reruns but I still say she would of been better off with. David Spencer because Kurt had them all to believe he was killed in Pearl harbor. When he actually was alive living in Florida and she visited him and he explained himself but they just went their separate ways and the only thing he gave Mary Ellen was a. damn fishing pole to give to their son John Curtis
I think they 'resurrected' Curt 2 because they knew they had made a mistake in letting the first actor go. I can't even imagine the original Curt 1 acting that way when he returned
I realize it was probably budget, but if the wedding wasn't just family it looks odd to just have a couple of people from the community there. Mary Ellen never seemed particularly close to the Baldwin sisters. She would naturally have friends she grew up with at her wedding
Well, since the focus of the show was FAMILY, NONE of the children had any real ‘friends’. Ben had Yancy for a friend. And Elizabeth had Aimee. That’s all I recall.
Becca Flynn My husband asked me how many kids I wanted on our third date. I was a little surprised but amused and said oh two or three, but I have to be married first. He said oh naturally when do you want to do it? This year, next year? I thought he was joking and he said he was dead serious if I was. I kiddingly said oh yeah sure next year. We’ll have been married twenty years November 2017. 😁
@@ruadhrose I have heard of more than one story over the years where the woman said to the man "We are getting married:". In all cases they were happy long-lived marriages.
Wow 10 years! I was very saddened by his sudden early passing as well. He sure showed his acting range going from the serious country Reverend Matthew Fordwick to Emmy and Golden Globe winning for silly Jack Tripper.
Seriously...we're going to go there. We're all going to fight about what's in the bible and what isn't. Good Lord, no wonder I don't go to church. Listen up peeps...you're missing the point. When you argue over things like this, it takes the focal point off of who is important...Jesus Christ. It also takes the focal point off of the way to salvation. But, I suppose that is what the devil LOVES to do, keep people divided. As long as there is division, the focal point will be ignored and the devil and his minions smile...
Maybe if he had been paid more money, the show would not have killed him off at Pearl Harbor. Curt was resurrected later as another actor for a little while.
I totally agree!!! I love his character and you're right Curt was the perfect match for Mary Ellen. I really hated that they got rid of him, to me he was one of the most interesting characters on the show.
@@kristikristi1183so that's why he left the show? Agree, that was a missed opportunity to let him go. I hate to say it but to bring him back with another actor and the way they did it was just dumb
I always thought it might be cool to marry Mary Ellen. Or at least ask her out for a date. It would probably involve John-boy. He would chaperone us in someway as the 3 of us were hiking up to the top of the mountain. Then John-boy would get into his literary thoughts and go look off into the distances. Then Mary Ellen and I could go off and have a quickie behind a bush. Oh goodness though! This might be a 3 part episode when it's discovered that Mary Ellen is pregnant!! No, more like a 9 month series! And I'd have to deal with John- boy reprimanding me all the time. Forget it! But can I still come over and eat those wonderful dinners you cook? Taco Bell is getting old! LOL! :)
The writers should have let Curt live. Can you imagine if they'd have had Jason die? John Boy was missing for awhile, and Ben was a P.O.W. Wasn't that enough from one family? They replaced Richard Thomas, and could have replaced the actor who played Curt. In fact, Curt didn't even have to be in the war.
I loved this episode. He was perfect for Mary Ellen. Erin was the only character on the show that drove me crazy, she was so whiny and in everybody's business.
Yes! Curt and Mary Ellen truly had chemistry together... Agree, Erin is so whiny, reminds me of Jan from The Brady Bunch-the middle child syndrome I suppose. I'm the middle sister but I'm more feisty like Mary Ellen however, I never met my Curt.😅
Her name is Vicki Schreck; she was born on November 14, 1961 in Los Angeles, California. IMDb lists "Big Bend Country" 1981 as her last acting credit, and that she is now a Gymnastics Instructor in Glendale, California. Raising 2 teen-aged boys. (Circa 2002)
I loved this episode! I loved the whole tv series. could u load whole eps? I deal w/ cancer, and this tv show heps w/ the pain. Eric Scott went to the same house of worship, although I was older,& was a true red haired nice little boy. His life has had much pain, but now he has joy. ;D!
She broke her engagement to David Spencer when she realized her feelings for him weren't as strong for him as they were for Curt. Remember when she told him the night of their wedding rehearsal, and she tried to hand him back his ring, and he didn't take it from her, so she dropped it on the ground and ran away?
@@kathrynmolesa1641 - Mary Ellen and Kurt likely never got a divorce. To her, and to the law, he was already legally dead, and she was a widow. No divorce needed when the man is legally declared dead by the government, even if he's relocated himself and assumed a new identity.
One of my favorite scenes of the “later” episodes. I liked Mary Ellen & Kurt. I also like how Erin burnt the letter from Kurt and then fessed up to it. I really remember this scene so well for some reason.
I am going to venture a guess that its because Mary Ellen's vows are from the old testament The Book of Ruth, which is included in the Jewish canon of books.
Curtis and MaryEllen look good together but in my opinion, MaryEllen didn't take her vows serious nor her marriage. Maybe Curtis saw that and gave MaryEllen more time to mature. Time ran out when Curtis faked his death during World War 2 and began a new life living in Florida with another woman. The reason Curtis left because he was severly wounded in the area he is unable to be intimate with his wife.
