Ousamequin, Paramount Chief of the Wampanoag, leads his people through a period of near desolation, only to live to see the enemy Narragansett threaten to absorb the remainder of his once great confederacy. In 1621 he decides to make allies with strange bedfellows in a gambit to take back control of his world.

9:39 😂😂😂 I've listened to ALL of your episodes WAY too many times. I feel like I literally saw Sir Gorges yesterday. In fact, it feels like all of these people should be......arrriving for family thanksgiving this year. 😂 Also, "poo poo on you." I literally busted up laughing, which i basically never do since I have no sense of humor. But YOURS is apparent enough if someone listens to your podcast long enough. Thank you for making learnimg so much fun. I love that you color the lessons with charisma!

OMG his entire series is FANTABULOUS! Best history teacher I've ever found, and I'm 45. He's about all I listen to anymore.

Highly recommend anyone who enjoys this time period to check out National Geographics Saints and Strangers. It'd the only piece I've seen that goes into the Native politics of 1600s New England and why certain tribes would have been open to trade. Also goes into the true manipulative role that Tisquantun likely played . The name Tisquantum translates as Rage, BTW. Really let's you reimagine the man when you know his names meaning. Another name I was happy to hear was Hobomok. Not enough info a ailable on him, but he appears to have been a great warrior that played a key role for the colony when playing native politics

I thought Harvard Professor Bailyn was the best on early new England but you're right up there maybe surpassing.

I've spent a shamefully grotesque thousands of hours researching and listening to podcasts about Elizabethan England, all the through post Revolutionary America, and the Civil War. No one compares to Eric's meticulous method of organizing resources into a cohesive and articulate narration. But, even more remarkable than that, his personality and natural tone of delivery makes it feel like we're sitting around a campfire listening to stories about people he just met yesterday.

I live in and around massachusetts, around where the pocumtuck used to be, I absolutely freaking love hearing about relatively local history, if someone made a vinland saga esc anime or game of thrones esc show about any one native Americans in the north east that was framed as a great leader or hero ide watch the HELL out of that!!!

@Oleblueyes2024 I'm binging literally right now.... As usual. Listening to "The Wampanoag IV: King Philip's War (1675-76) My 9th paternal great grandfather, Richard Edgerton, was in this War. He's buried in Founder's Cemetery (Post and Gager,) in Norwich, CT. This entire series has led me to more clues about my ancestors than any other "teacher" I've ever found.
