The more I hear from this OST the more I am completely blown away by it's raw power. Guillaume David is fantastic at thrusting us in a scene and making us feel. It's visceral in its reverence, and I enjoy listening to these tracks each chance I get.

One of my favourite bits of 40k lore is that the Mechanicus' binaric hymns and chants sound like painfully dissonant static to the unaugmented, but to the techpriests themselves it is processed into the most stirring and beautiful choral arrangements the imagination can produce. Just imagine listening to a terrible phone connection but in actual fact the phone itself is jammin'.

Also the way the admech sees the world around them. For any normal human their architecture looks blant and brutalistic, while in actuallity its all filled up with, for all intense and purposes, wifi nodes which they can see and interact with, meaning simply put their actuall architecture is VR based with the noopshere strings making it all up. Likewise they exist simultaniasly in the real world aswell in the noosphere, aka their version of internet/matrix

Brothers, imagine the machine in the factory that is as big as middle class american house, that was there since 1930-ies, that is almost one-of-a-kind (as often the case with really heavy factory machines, very very few of them are made), that nobody understands exactly how it work and only couple of grey-haired tech-priests know how to make it work, any documentation was lost or partially lost and it was not complete anyway, it have references to long gone factories and long dead magos... When you dig deeper it is even better: design engineers follow standard documents to the letter without knowing why certain rules are in place, following standard documents is more important than following common sense and even questioning these standards can get you fired for tech heresy. Nobody really understands why certain constants are what they are e.g. cos phi is always 0.7 for transformers and constant for temperature regulator is 0.5 - speaking of which what these constants even mean? (okay I actually know that regulator constants come from system of differential equations - like at least 20+ of them for anything resembling real system that could not even be solved analytically, or at least could not ~25 years ago when I studied that stuff in University). Real-world engineering is uncomfortably close to Cult Mechanicus... Our machines are just too complex even for very smart humans and physical principles behind them are even more so... There are entire branches of applied engineering sciences that nobody even heard of except very few people actually working in this field...

This is the track that you hear as bgm between missions while you are hanging about on the ship after which the track is named, Caestus Metallican. So the way I see it, this track is not intended to be "music", it is the background ambiance of the ship, which itself is essentially a spacefaring cathedral. The chanting, the organs, the engine revving sounds are meant to be the sounds you hear on the bridge of the ship, echoing from deep below the decks as thousands upon thousands of Mechanicus workers sing praise to the Omnissiah in the midst of their work and upkeep of the ship. I think the "engine revving sounds" or the low, rumbling humming sounds in this one and Children of the Omnissiah deserve a special mention. How i personally see them it is the machine itself singing along with, or perhaps answering to, the Mechanicus and their worship. In Caestus Metallican, those sounds are more rhythmic, which to me personally bring to mind a machine breathing, or perhaps a heartbeat, which fits since you hear this music when you are *inside* the machine, the ship in this instance.

Getting into the Warhammer 40k and Fantasy titles lately and I didn't expect the attention to detail in the music. Vermintide has this frantic and skittering energy. Darktide has this sort of Gothic influenced heavy Industrial music. Warhammer 40,000 has an exceptional history with it's video game music. The various themes for each faction in the Dawn of War games feels so on point with the theming. The music for the Eldar, 40k's space elves, feels elegant and ethereal, the Orks are heavy on their drums and percussion, the Space Marine music feel suitably heroic and glorious, yet intimidating. In 40k stories, there are sometimes descriptions of rituals the mechanicus use to placate "machine spirits", so as to ensure optimal function, and guard against the curse of dysfunction, corrosion, etc. In one story, the engineseer (priest/technician) said a prayer (can't remember the words) while wafting incense (probably made from cable sleeves or something) over the object he was interacting with. He then applied holy engine oil to "the rune of the motive force" (the on-button), depressed it, and then applied two ritual blows to the side of the pict-screen (computer screen) to bring it into focus. Yeah. So imagine this being done to the mechanicus music, and you capture the feeling pretty well.

Btw the small "clinging" sound is somewhat a little Easter egg for Catholic churgoers. Those are little bells (usually 3 or 4 together) that are used during Catholic masses most "spiritual" and sacred moments of Eucharist (turning bread and wine into Christ's "body and blood"). So their use here is really reinforcing the subtle, profoundly sacred layer you reference.

I've been casually interested in Warhammer 40k for, well, over a decade by this point, and only now, today, did I realize why the Imperium uses skulls everywhere. It's their symbol for humanity. It's so appropriate that they would use what is to us a symbol of death to represent humanity as a whole, because the Imperium is such an evil, stultifying, horrific place that it's essentially stripped all that was good and decent off those bones - or tried to. Even there, you still have the occasional act of compassion, no matter how hard the authorities crack down.
@DiabloDelMer1
@DiabloDelMer1 8 месяцев назад
I remember reading an interpretation somewhere that the use of skulls has a duel meaning. The first is that the skull serves as a sort of unifying symbol. It is the face of humanity when you strip all ethnicity, creeds and status; it is what we all possess and proves we are as one species. The second is the skull represents the ultimate service one can commit to the God Emperor and his Imperium, which is self sacrifice. Martyrdom is the truest sign of faith, and what better to express this in symbolism than the human skull, for it both is obviously human and if all goes well, will outlast the rest of your body by a hundred fold. This long-lastingness of the skeleton serves as a analogy that your actions will long outlast your life, and that even in death, through your sacrifices in life you serve the Emperor in your actions echoes. This also why its considered a great honor for a persons brain/skull to be used for a servoskull. Servoskulls represent this echo of sacrifice in a far more literal sense, and being a skull they are the face of the Imperium they don't come from the same ilk that most servitors are born from.

The Mechanicus game shows off the lack of humanity in the Mechanicus because there's no voice acting for the Mechanicus characters, just a lot of garbled noises, which is them communicating within the Noosphere. but the Necrons have english VOs. so the Necrons, the millions of year old Xenos, speak english but the "humans" speaking in an almost alien language.

TBH "from the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh it disgusted me" is a banger mentality when going to the gym and listening to this

the Mechanicus are my favorite 40k faction by far, and a pain to paint (love the challenge though) and it would bring me great joy if Marco were to pick some of them up, even if just do have someone else paint and then display. They are awesome figures, especially the large Imperial Knights - just amazingly badass machines with some very interesting lore. Lots of love Marco !

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine.

I absolutely love this game. And yes, I started with the minis about a year ago having been a 40k fan for over 20 years really because I was looking for a hobby that didn't involve sitting in front of a screen.

I'm French, the game was made by French people, and the music was made with a real organ from a cathedral (I forget which one, that of Anger but I'm not sure).

I never had much interest in 40k until I heard the OST, bought the game and I’ve been learning more about it ever since

Not sure if you’ve seen it in the comments (especially with this 4 month old video) their is lore if I’m remembering correctly that servitors (basically mindless augmented slaves) are actually built into the wall and are covered up but they’re always chanting, I wouldn’t doubt the admech ships have that as well, and of course the name of this song is the ship your on so it being background noise is probably literal for them

Wondering if you'd be interested in any anime outs as well? One I would highly recommend is Evangelion. Angel of Doom is an excellent starting point as it's very iconic to the series. There's so many great peices.

Since I've found this channel, I've started listening to my favorite music more thoroughly, carefully, mindfully And after that I've discovered many, many little details, that were missed at the first meeting with the song It's just a shame I can't share those thoughts and emotions with others, so I'm rushing here after every notification in hopes to see my favorite soundtracks, but since I tend to like weird and obscure unknown titles, I probably won't see it and that's why I made this ridiculously long thing - to ask you to take a look at the love of my life - Pathologic, both 1 and 2 game. You won't be disappointed Those sounds still haunt me after all these years and no other game have rooted out such deep and primal feelings from my soul Btw love your channel, your work and you passion for music, hope to see more of this wonderful videos (人´∀`*)
