It's a rare day that a track like this comes up where we literally hear the character of a whole race of beings all thanks to instrument choice and technique. You really hear the disgusting quality of the Skaven in the choice to press on the strings here, legit creepy. Fascinating stuff. Another victory by Jesper Kyd.

Funny thing about the Skaven in terms of lore: The Empire, which are like the main human faction in the setting actually just deny the existence of the Skaven entirely to the point where you can actually get in a lot of trouble for claiming they are real (there's actually a lot of memes about that). That's because the empire is actually keenly aware of the existence and also knows that the Skaven are a lot more powerful than the empire. The thing that keeps the Skaven from just taking over a large portion of the world is the fact that they keep bickering and fighting among each other, however, if they were aware quite how much is known about them on the surface, they might stop their infighting and unite to collectively attack mankind, which would spell desaster. By denying their existence, they keep the citizens from talking about Skaven which in turn means that the Skaven keep on fighting each other instead of uniting for an invasion.

Well the thing is that there isnt really a main answer to that as the warhammer canon was allways handled a bit loose and mostly dependent on the writer but there a 3 main ways this was answered. 1: As you said the Empire keeps the knowledge of the Skaven under wraps as they feared they could unite against them. 2: Its actually the reverse as the Skaven are paranoid that humanity could unite against them if they were public knowledge. This would one the one hand fit the paranoid nature of the skaven and would work with one of the main themes of the series as its always heavily implied that the good factions could more or less curbstomp Chaos and the other evil factions if they would actually get their shit together. 3: The Skaven are actually publicly known... Its just that outside of very few people with first hand knowledge or somewhat deeper dawi connections just assumes them to be a subspecies of Beastmen instead of their own species. This one is sometimes used with the other two explanations. Again it changes a bit from author to author but those are the main explanations for the whole "masquerade" aspect of the Skaven.

@URKCEHinoSuu I like that narratively, tbh. The idea that humanity spent such time and effort no doubt doing some pretty reprehensible things to keep them secret, it ended up screwing them over. It's like the old dubiously canon 40k lore that the Emperor can and has died and reincarnated more powerful than before. So by keeping him alive, humanity is spending billions of rare, potentially incredibly powerful psykers and an inordinate amount of time and effort to keep their god from being able to properly fight back Chaos. Warhammer is a franchise all about short sightedness not paying off.

So, something that stood out to me is that behind all of the chaos, the rhythm almost makes me think of clockwork. The skaven are engineers. Not the kind you want building anything you're going to be using or encountering, but engineers all the same. The kind that can and will build nuclear weapons and drop them onto a battlefield where their fellow skaven are still fighting. There is no thing as friendly fire to a skaven. 2:50 Yes-yes. Skaven are trick-sneaky. We deceive-fool you man-things. Edit note: Skaven are close to human size. Skaven, pronounced the same way as raven, are the most goonish things I've ever seen in fantasy. In the game Total War: Warhammer 2 and 3 they have a building they can construct in their cities which mine gold, the structure has 3 levels the descriptions of these go as follows: Tier 1: "Skaven sniff out gold, and will excavate out of spite, knowing Man-things and Dwarf-things crave it." Tier 2: "On discovering a substantial seam of gold, a small mine needs fortifying against other treasure-seekers." Tier 3: "Although they have no use for it themselves, Skaven purposely mine gold purely to inconvenience the other races." The Skaven exist to be petty, sneaksy, thieving that are also somehow, thanks to Ikit Claw, one of the most technologically advanced races in Warhammer Fantasy. They've got some vehicles called "doom-flayers" and "doomwheels" they use in a shock cavalry role, they've got things call Ratling Gunners with use, you guessed it, Gatling guns. They've got mortars, grenades, chemical weapons, warplock jezzails which are long range weapons similar to sniper rifles. They've also got a weapon call the "Doomrocket" which is basically a low-yield tactical nuclear warhead. Granted, these weapons aren't as clean or as advanced as our modern day weapons; but they're still effective. As a metric butt-ton of giant bipedal rats, they still don't care about individuals in the army so friendly fire is almost considered essential rather than a definite possibility.

It's a key characteristic of the Skaven which is inherent to how they think rather than being merely cultural - they trust nobody and are trusted by nobody, they do not have such a thing as "friends", only business partners - who they will backstab and murder without hesitation if they think it will be of benefit. Every Skaven from the lowest slave to the highest Grey Seer is constantly scheming against everyone they know to gain as much power and wealth as possible, and every single Skaven believes that they are the most intelligent being in the universe (maybe except for the Horned Rat) and that everyone else is merely a tool to be exploited.

Deep under the world, they chitter and plan… Watching… Waiting… Also apparently that scratching noise you hear in the string instruments is created by something called an Apprehension Engine Yes you are correct, the Skaven do have a "organized" society based on clans. Each clan has a specific role such as for example clan Moulder's job is to create war beasts though breeding, mutation and surgical alteration. Among these clans there are four that stand out. Above these clans is the Council Of Thirteen who rule above all Skaven. Their politics are so complicated, convoluted and labyrinthine that assassination attempts are quite common among the council members(Lords Of Decay). Then of course you have the Verminlord and the Horned Rat himself who stand at ranks of their own.

It's a mix of dark magic and using a resource called "warpstone" which is a crystallised version of Dhar, a combination of all winds of magic and is basically fantasy nuclear energy. The skaven are the only race crazy enough to use this unstable energy in their technology because it's so unstable and as such, only works about half the time... but to the skaven, who have SO many of their number in their armies, who cares if half your Ratling Gun (Ratmen with Gatling Guns) units don't work or blow up because you still have your other half of functioning Ratling Guns against... men with swords and shields. The skaven aka the vermintide are horde of deadly rat men who are also a group of unapologetic asswholes who only think of themselves even among the horde they are more like to shoot through their own front lines with rapid fire weapons because why not they are also known to launch nukes for the hell of it. At one point they almost pulled the moon out of the sky only for another group of skaven I believe clan skryer then nuked it out of the sky purely so they wouldn’t be one upped in tech by another group of rats. This is an actual canon event in the lore for them. They are also the most technologically advanced race in warhammer fantasy and age of sigmar although I use the term loosely basically a mixture of ww1 tech with some fantastical element and a penchant for being just as likely to explode and kill the user just as much as it would kill whoever it is pointed at. So when I said nuke I genuinely meant like a nuclear bomb but magical themed. They also have a mini gun unit called the “Ratling. Gun” which puns out the ass when it comes to the skaven.

The Skaven have been my favourite Warhammer Fantasy faction since my age was in single digits. I've always loved the macabre, and when I bought the rulebook for the tabletop minis, I was indelibly affected by the short story that described their creation (look up the Doom of Kavzar, you won't regret it). The pure horror of it fascinated me, and the more I knew, the more I adored them. They can be the most hilarious, joke-worthy race in the entire franchise... and yet, with a flick of a switch, they become the most utterly terrifying. Because you can never truly defeat the Skaven; you can only ever drive the chittering masses back, again and again and again... until you're too tired to fight anymore, and the Vermintide, finally, consumes you. Always happy to see you taking on more of the Games Workshop-based gaming music. Can't wait until the next!

From a literary standpoint, the skaven existed in Warhammer Fantasy to be humanity's "Dark Reflection" so to speak. They are what humanity would be with every redeeming quality - honor, self-sacrifice, generousity, etc - stripped away, and with all their worst qualities amplified. They're craven, conniving, vile creatures that embody the worst of humanity, cranking that very thing up to 11. From a meta standpoint in the franchise, they were embodiments of the concept of 'decay and ruin'. Their god was one of Ruination, not mere destruction or annihilation, but specifically ruin, to separate them a little bit from the factions of Chaos that embodied the cosmic forces of society that threatened it's existence (Disease, violence, indulgence/depravity, and the lust for power/knowledge). This was also to separate them a bit from the Beastmen of Chaos, who embodied the 'inhumanity' present within humankind (animalistic, brutal, tribal, etc). You can hear in the way the music is rather discordant and abrasive that these beings have no concept of harmony, that their 'music' is meant to unnerve humanity in grim mockery. The moving audio mixing hints at them being everywhere at once, their presence nearly inextricable from humanity itself (they live under every major human city too). Not only are they seemingly everywhere, they're also seemingly 'nowhere'. They're sneaky critters (cowards too) that only strike when they feel they have an advantage, like in an ambush or in massive hordes. I can think of no better track to embody these creatures. The grim mirror of humanity, omnipresent yet imperceptible, embodying disharmony in their music, always seeming tensed up and ready to strike... but only when you're not ready for it, if they have anything to say about it.

Arguably one of my favorite tracks in all of gaming, for one of my favorite fantasy races in all of worldbuilding. Especially since it really encapsulates the uneasy and decrepit atmosphere of skaven culture and general skittering chittering unease, as well as you mentioned their... General villany. Helps that it also feels it steadily conveys the gravity of their power, coming out one by one until they emerge as a literal 'tide of vermin' that floods their playgrounds, bringing with them chaos and ruin, before scurrying back into the shadows leaving nothing but corpses and tragedy behind. And yes, you are correct, they absolutely mean business and are a serious threat. Way more serious than one might assume when they think "oh its just a buncha dumb rats coming out from the sewers and shadows to fight because they're scared to face us in broad daylight." In actuality, what you have is "quantity over quality" epitomized, weakened only by their squabbling. Which, once stopped to (mostly) cooperate, literally brought about the fucking apocalypse. More slaves, more skilled warriors, more resources, more production, more research and development, and more bodies to throw than an army would be able to kill if every bullet fired killed at least one skaven. Combined with a society that weeds out all of the weakest and breeds only the strongest (for their 'important' folk anyhow) what you are left with are huge armies of 6'2"+ giant ratment capable of ripping a man's arm off, seemingly unstoppable plague fanatics, assassins capable of killing the greatest of warriors, and most notably technology the likes of which the world had never seen, ranging from fully automatic weaponry in a world of flintlock, to bioengineering capable of creating horrifying monsters, to literal nuclear technology (which they then used to *blow up the fucking moon.*) Love these silly little guys

I'm sure plenty of others have already mentioned this, but here goes anyway just in case: Humanity isn't entirely aware of the existence of the skaven. People in power do, they know all too well that an entire civilization of rat-people that greatly outnumber them live just beneath their feet; however, they deny their existence. The common people basically treat them like the boogeyman, or consider them to just be beastmen (beastmen are their own entire race). The skaven keep up this illusion themselves, often employing assassins to take care of anyone that's learned too much, either through outright killing them, threatening them or making some kind of deal to keep them quiet. The reason they even make a deal is to manipulate this person and further their own goals indirectly. These assassins even have a spell cast on them or imbibe a certain potion that causes their bodies to dissolve into black goo if they should fail and die, so that the body can't be used as evidence. Furthermore, there seems to be a phenomenon that I believe is related to a spell cast on the skaven as a race: anyone who witnesses one will slowly begin to forget about the encounter, or at least the details become fuzzy. As few as 40 years ago in the story, the skaven nearly captured a major human capital in a blatant invasion. This invasion is now said to have just been beastmen. Some people manage to remember, but anyone else assumes they're crazy or they end up "dealt with." The skaven are so far content to hide and wait and continue their infighting, knowing that anyone with the power to do something about them either deny their existence or don't care enough.

When it comes to playing with a distorted tone, you don't actually have to apply a lot of pressure. You can hear this by the fact that there is a bouncing technique in there on the end of the tone. Physically all you need to do is move closer to the bridge, nearly on top of it. This, especially with modern strings, produces a metallic sound, which is used to great effect here. One other thing they could be doing is playing some of the loudest squeaks on the other side of the bridge, though I cannot say whether or not they are doing this for certain. The other benefit this track has is it's editing and filters. Jesper Kyd kicks the most butt for his soundtrack. If you've been enjoying Darktide, you'll enjoy Vermintide 2. VT2 is insanely good, and fits a similar niche. I will say however that it is much more melee-centric, and has a more defined story between the missions. The story isn't crazy, and acts as more of context and a loose guideline for the missions to follow.

Should be noted that unlike Darktide and Mechanicus, which are from Warhammer 40k, Vermintide is from Warhammer Fantasy. So one's Grimdark Sci-Fi whereas the other is closer to medieval or early modern High Fantasy.

For me, the most skaven theme is the "vermin tide" theme from Total war warhammer II. Sounds crazy, frenetic and once you played some time to the game, you can totally imagine a crazy rat orde coming to you in all directions.

Skaven are probably the most technologically advanced race in Warhammer fantasy but they are more or less bereft of a moral compass. they are great engineers but they build with trash, and scraps as well as what they make. the skaven have no OSHA or any other safety group, they have a device called the farsqueaker that's pretty much a radio but its purposely made shoddy so that ambitious skaven can take advantage and kill superiors in 'accidents' to move up the ranks. more or less all skaven that have been portrayed have been male, female skaven are kept in whats called a breeding pit (these are only accessible to high ranking skaven, castrated skavenslaves, and those that earn great favor of a very high-ranking skaven) called rat mothers, brood mothers, or breeders, and Each Rat Mother weighs at least 700 pounds and measures 10 feet long from snout to tail. and if you want an idea of the skaven mortality rate a Rat Mother gives birth to 1~10 rattlings every week

Vermintide 2’s OST always engages me, even with the hundreds of hours I’ve put into the games grinding out maps. Jesper kyd has been one of my favourite composers ever since Assassins Creed 2 and he never disappoints. Keep up the good work Marco and any chance for a Furi OST analysis? It’s a really cool indie game that’s got pretty hype music

The best part about the song, is that it moves from left, to right. Over and over. Like a tolling bell, which is the symbol for the Skaven originating from thier first known appearance in The Doom of Kavzar.

The Skaven are just the best. Filthy, man-sized rat things with an endless hunger and a "society" built *entirely* on pitiless back-stabbing cutthroat oneupmanship (oneupratship?) would be cool enough (their schemes are so byzantine and opportunistic they often look comical to outsiders), but we have the Great Clan Skryre throwing about insane blends of magic and engineering, Clan Pestilens conjuring the worst diseases in the Old World, Clan Eshin with terrifyingly lethal assassins and Clan Mors boasting the kind of monstrous flesh sculpting that would make Godrick the Grafted feel ill. And the Empire keeps them under wraps because if the public knew just *how many* of them were down there, society would simply break down in panic. God, I love Skaven.

Skavens have a bit of dimorphism meaning they are different types of skaven that are different sizes. Skaven in general have a very hunched over posture and are such only a little smaller than a a man 4”-5” abouts. Some Skaven like Stormvermin can be man sized or greater 6”+ and Rat Ogres…well I think you can surmise those are much larger than humans! Individually most humans could probably best a Skaven physically, but a Stormvermin would be perhaps a greater threat than the average person. What really makes them so intimidating is absolutely OVERWHELMING numbers. For every one human there are like HUNDREDS of Skaven and TENS of Stormvermin!

Vermintide 2's premiere trailer perfectly encapsulates Kyd's thesis of crawling inescapable dread carried by tiny skittering feet. The ironic thing is the trailer music is never heard again.... unless you're the last one standing and it's you against the unending tide.

Id recomend you watch some of the trailers for vermintide 2. To get a feeling for what the Skaven are capable off. Imagen an enemy witch steel cannot tame. Walls canot stop. An enemy where there is no front line. One where you cut the head of the snake a 100 stands ready to take their place. Where casualties means nothing. And ends justify means. Skaven is what got me into Warhammer.

It's giving me bowing at, on, or behind the bridge vibes with a rigid staccato bowing and a lot but not grinding pressure. Also wouldn't be shocked if this part was scored to be similar to if not in one of the experimental systems in leu of your standard octave. Actual terms are escaping me atm after not having picked up a violin in over a decade.

Hello Marco, your analysis on music is always amazing. Im completely new to opera, but i find it beautiful. Even i who doesn't know much about opera, i can felt the emotion they expressed in their songs. I also watched a few cover you did and it was amazingg🔥. So i would like you to react to Lilium from Elfen Lied the 3 minute version, it's a Latin old anime opening song, where i think it expressed the character "Lucy". I think you'll love it. And of course, a tenor cover from you would be great!!

Its been said I'm sure, but Skaven are indeed mutant rats in the shape of men. They are not human in any sense, but merely the raw stuff of chaos forcing rats to take the shape of men. (And yes, correct pronunciation is "Skay-Ven") As for size, the largest are about human sized. Most though are the size of dwarves or smaller.

Skaven are taller than humans, due to how they run they often seem smaller. In addition to that, vast amounts of their army numbers are made up of expendable lesser Skaven. And when saying vast amounts, I mean ocean filling amounts of Skaven. The Skaven are in fact so numerous, that they potentially outnumber all other races combined and they are everywhere with very few exceptions. Housing underneath the major cities of almost every place. Their existence is denied by the Empire of Men, which is not only because of the hubris of men but also because certain Skaven are very carefully eliminating evidence of their existence that has been accumulated over the centuries. But what keeps the Skaven from conquering the entire world? They are rats, and if their population grows too large, their clans to powerful their society literally collapses on itself. Their Warlords and Grey Seers mostly seeking power for themselves and themselves only get envious of other Skaven who achieve great things, while their underlings grow envious with every victory they achieve. The one single force stopping the Vermintide to ever succeed is the Vermintide. They come from underneath in uncountable numbers. Neither trenches nor walls will hold them back, for they just climb those wall and fill those trenches with the bodies of their own dead, so that the endless tide can wash over the world. And that is only if they don't just emerge from within the cities and castles. The Skaven are everywhere. The numbers endless. Their technology wonderous in the most terrible ways. Their power unimaginable. Talking about Vermintide, there's these endless hordes of Skaven roaming, but nothing puts more adrenaline into you than hearing the marching sound of a Stormvermin patrol. They march in unison and are shocking contrast of a well disciplined military unit of heavily armored and skilled combatants within a flood of their more expendable kin.
