At first they were the invaders of the island, because they're Germanic people and second, do you know how many people killed and murdered the British in Canada, US territory, Australia and Africa. My grandmother whom is currently 88 and born in 1931, was 9/10 years old when bombs hit her hometown of Dewsbury on 12 December 1940 and the surrounding areas. The anti-aircraft guns were positioned at the top of Caulms Wood (the local woodland area) there was a communal shelter about one or two streets away from her in Batley, one of her older friends at the time died in the blast, she's told me the most horrific part of the bombing was the screeching sound as the bomb shot downwards i remember when she told me she said it was 'hellish' which is probably the most accurate and appropriate description, Her father fought in the first world war too, driving supplies onto the front line via horse. I cant imagine what this experience would have done to him, all the PTSD and such, a truly truly unimaginably terrifying time.

My Mum was born 30 September 1939, 27 days after WWII was declared. As a toddler, she tells me that she can still remember being led by her Mother (my Granny) by the hand with her elder brothers and sister to a nearby farmer's field to lay in the ditches of the field night after night until the 'all clear' sounded. In the pitch dark, cold night air, any sound would have been frightening for a toddler, much less the sound of bombs exploding. A different age....❤❤❤❤

It makes me wonder. Just how long I would have lasted, as a claustrophobic mess that I am? I would have very likely panicked and then been smothered by my neighbors to quell my nervous thrashing and pandemonium. At least those sirens are straightforward. Short bursts up and down for the hide for cover, and then the long and steady (almost peaceful or serene) drone for the All Clear. It’s quite a shame those sirens are still in use today for still all the wrong reasons excepting tornadoes and tests. Thanks for uploading this, harrowing as it is.
