Great review. Its a great series, one of the best out there imo(tho on my first read I was actually a lot more critical than you, giving it like 3/5 overall, only after my re-read it really grew on me, and became 5/5). You should definitely read the next series following PoN. Its a lot less popular than PoN but its just as good (though it is quite different, it gets even more philosophical). Also minor feedback from me - I think you should put the quotes on the screen in text format when saying them. Would make it easier to follow in my opinion.

I am very happy you like so much these books. I feel they are so underappreciated. I think they are the kind of books that you could use when clueless random people underestimate the fantasy genre. Bakker is such a great author. His writing is beautiful but so punching and insightful at the same time. The more you read the more it will feel like some kind of sacred scriptures. In regards of the characters, I will only add that Cnaiur is my favourite of all times and persevere with Esmenet. Her Odyssey is long and has many ups and downs yet till you reach the end of the seventh book.
@bookswithzara
@bookswithzara 2 года назад
Completely agree! That being said, I feel like his fans (which I now count myself as one) do appreciate them, so whilst they’re not the most popular books, there’s a very loyal fandom. Good to know on Esmenet, I’ll keep pushing through!

Kind of book that need to be discuss around fan friends with a bottle of wine. Quotes are just phenomenal in Prince Of Nothing/Aspect Emperor. When you encounter one you just freeze a moment and lost yourself in a deep philosophical thinking
@bookswithzara

Couldn’t agree more. Has multiple moments like that during this initial trilogy - one of the few fantasy series that has really made me think.

Glad you still like it, good luck with the Thousandfold Thought. Re. the philosophical aspect of TSA, I think Bakker's neatly summarized his whole premise in the opening quote of the first book - "One cannot raise walls against what has been forgotten". If TSA is "about" anything, it's about exploring the limitations of knowledge, about how our perspectives keep us captive. - The Dunyain were forgotten for two thousand years, so when they reemerged, the worldborn men had no "walls" to raise against them; they were like helpless children. - The Dunyain themselves also forgot all the irrationalities of the outside world, so when they encounter stuff like Sorcery, they're defenseless against it. - The Consult were forgotten for three hundred years, so now their agents can move unseen, wearing the faces of men. - The Gods were unable to see the No-God (and seeing is knowing), so they are doomed to extinction at its hands.

@@lorn6294 Thanks. Not really spoilerish, Kellhus explains in the 3rd book why things are destined to come to pass a certain way. (And of course, predestination also utterly fails a number of times.)

Love this book! My favorite of the trilogy. I probably had The Darkness That Comes Before around 4.5 stars when I first read it, so I had high expectations for this one going in, but was still completely blown away by it. I walked away from this one thinking that The Second Apocalypse might be my favorite series of all time and I still had five more books to read.

Yessss, same for me. This series is definitely a new favorite and same with Bakker as an author!

Such an amazing book! The Warrior Prophet is my favourite of the first three books. I must have tabbed over 100 parts within it when I did a re-read recently. Definitely, as you mentioned, the battle scenes are excellent. Cnaiur is one of my favourite characters ever. Layer upon layer of introspection within him. I like how you made the comparison with Logen. Both characters deconstruct and break apart the typical barbarian archetype.
@bookswithzara

Wow! I wouldn’t be surprised if I do the same haha. Re Cnaiur and Logen, exactly! So multifaceted rather than just a brute.

That was so not how I have been pronouncing Cnaiur in my head. But yes, he is an amazing character. Have not read First Law yet so I only have Karsa to compare to.

I loved hearing your thoughts on this book, Zara! I also think Bakker does something special with the battle scenes. I love the way he created the holy war atmosphere with hoards of people, song, banners, carnage, and even mastodons. I was at first a little put off with the merging of Esmenet and Kellus in this book, but it really built the foundation of betrayal: "Whore after all." 😫I just started A Thousandfold Thought and will check out your review for that one when I finish!

It is clear to me as someone who read the books as they were published that these books are building an audience year-over-year. These books will be considered literature in the future in the same way people appreciate Frank Herbert and JRR Tolkien as masterworks at what they are trying to accomplish. The strange thing is that those of us who have finished the whole series are transformed by it to a greater or lesser degree. No one finishes the series as the same person who started the series. It opens you to so many ideas, considerations, moral approaches, and conflicting epistemologies. It also is a book steeped in messages for us now in this time and at this place. It is a cautionary tale of how we can program our own destruction, figuratively by what we choose or maybe more accurately what we unquestioningly accept. As an aside, whatever you think right now at the end of book 2 as the point of the series, you are probably wrong. TRUTH SHINES!

Just wait until you get to the second part of the overarching series. Things get WILD, immensely wild. Like Dune books 4-6 went to another level so do books 4-7 of the Second Apocalypse.

Just finished this recently and into Thousandfold. Yes, this book took a very dark turn in a hurry which was really missing in Darkness. Started thinking of Kelhus as Jorg Atredies to mash up some series. The writing is very good. But unfortunately he uses words or phrases that take me out of the fantasy setting. Cubicle was very jarring. And yes, the Crusades and Xian eschatology is all over the series. I also got an allusion to Odin nailing himself to Ygdrassil sacrificing himself to himself to be granted the secret of the runes. Was a little disappointed in Esmi as well but am curious as to where it goes. And have some thought on a few other things that will have to wait.
