Q: What is the watch (brand) you can't justify and why? Answer: Ming. I appreciate the design language, but the odd hype and contrived scarcity / restricted ordering format make the watch (brand) more frustrating than fun. Seems that most "lucky" (successful) buyers are either speculators / hopeful flippers or disappointed customers when they see the pieces "in the metal"--which is why so many are for sale right after drops. Also, it's an amalgam of parts from sometimes unknown suppliers and the releases notoriously have functionality and finishing issues.
@AboutEffingTime
@AboutEffingTime 2 года назад
Yeah I'm with you on Ming. I can't stand them. I respect doing something different, but really isn't my cup of tea. Plus the hype is just annoying. Cheers, Adrian

Definitely underwhelming and overrated. I waited 13 months for the 17.09 and it was my biggest disappointment purchase. The ridiculous scrutiny they put you through at the purchase was even more ridiculous. They spent one week “investigating” my account to authorise my purchase. Let’s just say..never again!

Absolutely love this show and the chemistry, thank you (and Four Pillars Gin) for making this! Personal unjustifiable for me is the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date 80th Anniversary. Love the brand and its rebel-alliance independent spunk, the brand's values of conservation, the heritage... love the actual watch to bits (that dial, that bronze, those cathedral hands), but for some reason just can't justify pulling the trigger. My circumference (wrist) isn't the issue I don't think, but having made several trips to the boutique and leaving empty-handed I'm starting to feel like George's act of god at work. Discovered this podcast today. I've listened to all three episodes so far one after the other. I'd like to know your thoughts on which brand has innovated the most and who is still innovating. There are a lot of watches that look near identical and it seems to me that innovation is now stemming from colours instead of design. Bonus question: Do you think Covid has positively or negatively affected horology in the long run? While some brands had to close their doors it seems others, as shown in this episode, have sprung up out of nowhere.
@marcusflack1523

We are pretty sure there are also a bunch out there that are waiting till the season ends and then binge the lot. This is super relaxing to watch and be entertained by. Thanks for joining Mike. Answer. Covid whilst being the thorn in all our sides has stopped people travelling and therefore created surplus money in their pockets. Perhaps for many, buying a new watch in this time equals GREAT ADVENTURE that they would have not otherwise explored. So yes many brands have capitalised on this and have only grown stronger. For us we are super pleased the travel restrictions are over as this has aloud us top all come together to make this incredible show!

My major stumbling block when it comes to the Cartier Tank is just the fact that it's a dress watch. Esthetically, it's my ideal, but I'd rarely get a chance to wear it. Here’s a topic that should be addressed: why can’t we have dress watches with proper water resistance? I love dress watches but also want to be able to swim with any watch I own. @@tudorserban111 while there is a point to that to some degree, I honestly don’t buy it. I’m sure that there are sub 10mm thick watches that have demonstrated it to be possible to have 100m of water resistance. Isn’t this all relative? Ultimately, every watch is unjustifiable as we all carry super accurate phones that tell us the time. Heck, I’m typing on a phone that has the time right effing there. But, I’d rather look away from my phone to check the time on my wrist. Why? Because I want to and it makes me happy. If you want a watch, and you can afford it, JUST BUY THE DARN THING. You don’t have to justify it to anyone (other than perhaps a spouse, but that’s another story.)

"Standard issue" Cartiers are absolutely justifiable, especially a tank. Have to disagree with George though. First, Tank in gold is preferable to the steel, but nothing wrong with the steel. Also, Reverso is a great, but it depends on which on you have/get. About Cartier, I have a Drive extra flat that I got for a song and I love it. I noticed a week or two back that they no longer have the Drive on their site, so I'm assuming it's being discontinued. I've seen some steel Drives out there for very good prices.

Bravo fella's👏. Very much enjoyed this episode, as usual. So.....I would without a doubt choose, the SBN003. I am a fan of Breitling, and the direction that, Georges Kern, is taking them these days, but not that model in-particular. I do feel the draw, of the "Cartier Gang," but not for the "Tank." My choice, would be the "Santos," instead, but I do think the "Tank," gives off an heir of confidence, and the impression, that the man wearing it, has absolutely nothing to prove, to anyone. Much like that of the Rolex, "Explorer." For me, my "unjustifiable," would be any timepiece, w/ a retail greater than $250. I realize that the term luxury, can be interpreted loosely. By my definition, pretty much any watch purchase, is to me, a "luxury." In my daily life, a watch is completely unnecessary. The time is all around us. It's my hobby, and more so an expression of style, than a necessary tool. I value, the engineering, and artistic expression, that go into, the development, and production, of these items. But I value my family more. As much as I covet, these wearable forms of art, and pore over the history, behind the brands and amazing designers, and artisans, that produce them, each time I purchase a new one, something inside, reminds me that the money could have been better spent, on the life that my wife and I, share together. To lessen this feeling of "buyers remorse," I really try to practice restraint, by limiting my purchases, to only a few per year, and by also tying these models, to specific events of importance. Such as birthdays, and anniversaries. I love watches, but I love my amazing life, even more. This life, is only possible though, by my willingness to practice such restraint, and by keeping my priorities in perspective. Hope this makes sense. Here's wishing you, all the best. And please keep up the good work. Cheers...

100% IWC Big Pilot 5002… I’m normally a lover of ‘smaller’ watches (36mm Explorer is my daily, and the biggest watch I have is 39mm). But, there’s just something about the Big Pilot 5002 that I’ve always found just cool. If I ever bought one though I’d strap the 46mm chunky beast to my wrist and think “WTF have I done?” 🤦‍♂️😂

The intro with good, bad and ugly is hilarious; the whole show is the best I can imagine for a watch enthusiast atm. As for the topic, Ulysse Nardin Freak is insane from a design perspective with the mechanism acting as hands. It just makes you freaked out. But it is so hard to imagine someone really wearing Freak as a time teller, so it's kind of killing the whole idea of the watch in the first place.

The thing with the ST1901 movement, is that you can buy them all day for around $120 USD if you know where to look. He is probably getting them a lot cheaper, so that means you can have the 500 pound price, but any mechanical chrono is going to cost in terms of servicing. I know there are many people, I am one, who could afford what is about 1550 bucks for me, for a watch, but could NOT afford a $500+... at the very cheapest end... service fee. More I am from that 'Immature' watch market. Which I shant say is immature.... but is one with a very working class identity. My father was born in 1918, and had 'Nice' watches most of his life.... nice was Walthams, and Hamiltons, and basically all the American brands you could get until the end of the 60s, which were nice for a working man, any average little Aussie Battler could afford. When they went away, no one was buying Rolex or Omega... they began buying Seiko and Citizen and Casio. That means Watchmakers are few and far between here. Yeah, in the big smoke, you will find them, or jewelers certified as such as well. But I live in the bush. Even if I could afford expensive mechanical chronograph service level prices, I would be hard pushed to find anyone within 500km who COULD service it. Being able to go online and buy a basically new, in box, movement, for no more than a couple of hundred bucks? Well all I need are some watchmaking tools, and to buy enough ST1901 movements to ensure I eventually get it right when I track down a video somewhere of someone pulling the whole movement out. That is NOT an option on 'nicer" chronograph movements. Add a 'Nicer' movement to this watch, and you make it something suddenly too expensive for any normal Reg to buy. Not just in an under matured market like here, but anywhere, because the moment you put an expensive Swiss movement in, or even a German one, then who can service, and at what price, shrinks massively even for people in Europe or North America. Suddenly the watch loses so much of its charm. A playful watch for reasonable money, beautifully designed, most people could afford, becomes an expensive thing, with highly specialised maintenance needs.
@marcusflack1523
@marcusflack1523 2 года назад
You make a good point here for sure. We will always be paying for marketing and design costs. As you can see with the guys they all vote for throwing away the importance of the inhouse movement...I guess placing a larger importance on the actual design and execution of the watch. But for me...I could never justify that pricepoint of the Brietling. Way too high on a watch that wont get high rotation in my collection.
