Finally we landed a Wave Permit. We learned, as we hiked around, that there is much more to see than just the Wave.
In this video I will show the loop trip that we came up with. This includes some must see locations like The Second Wave, Top Rock Arch, The Alcove, Melody Arch, The Grotto, Big Mac, The Boneyard and The Dinosaur Tracks.
I have also included maps and GPS Coordinates to help you along the way.

@@RJB The condition was great and just patches of snow and ice. There is one sketchy climb just before the Wave that scared my wife but doable just go slow. Also best to have high clearance and 4x4 to get to House Rock road trailhead. I posted our video on my channel today and you can see the Wave condition was great when we visited but can change if a storm comes.

Thanks for watching and the note. The gear you need is what you would normally carry in this enviroment. Be ready for hot, cold, rain and snow. You will be spending all day out there and on any day in Utah the weather can change quickly reguardless of forecast. As far as water, take what you need for a good day of walking. Hey there! I'm a 28 year old in relatively good shape from Arizona and I just found out today I'm going to the wave in July! I've lived in AZ most of my life first in Flagstaff and then Tucson so I'm no stranger to extreme heat and I've grown up hiking down the Grand Canyon several times and hiked pretty much everything there is in the state. However I applied for the lottery as a single person and didn't think I'd get it but surprise surprise... here I am, especially now that I live in London for the last few years and am flying back just for this. I'm really excited but as I'm hiking alone I'm worried about getting lost as I won't be going with a group and I don't have "open navigation" experience. Did you find it easy to get lost in or do you have any advice on staying on the right trail? About how long of a hike to the Wave is it from the parking lot? Also, I know 20 people get to go a day but it looks like your group were the only ones there at that point, did you run into any other people? I'm was hoping to start at sunrise and maybe make my way back with a group of people when they get there and decide to go later on. Thank you!
@danahollister4084
@danahollister4084 5 лет назад
Good for you! In my opinion it is pretty straight forward. If you load a GPS with what I have you will not have trouble. The rangers give you a map with photos on where to go as well. With both you should be fine. We got an early start and passed a couple people on the way in. There was a couple at the wave when we got there. Earlier the better. Try to go up and see some of the other sites as well. The wave is only a couple or three miles. You are right about there will be others there. Don't count on them knowing more than you. Most we saw were under prepared. To the wave is not a strenuous hike. If you add what we did it will be 8 miles or so round trip. Best of luck and feel free to contact us with any other questions. My email is dana@danahollisterbooks.com. Safe travel!

I get to take this hike in July! So excited! If you wouldn't mind answering a couple of questions, I'd really appreciate it. First, is it necessary to have GPS? I have read suggestions to take a GPS. Are the directions and map given by BLM easy to follow? Lastly, I've read various statements of the distance to The Wave. I've read 5 miles and I've also read 3 miles. Do you know which is accurate? Thank you so much for sharing your video and experience! I very much appreciate it!
@danahollister4084
@danahollister4084 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching. Ask away I will try to help. It is not necessary to take a GPS but it is a good insurance policy if for nothing else to track your route so you can follow it back. The map they give is pretty good with photos. It works fine. I think it is about 3 miles to the wave. 6 round trip. Just to the wave is pretty easy. However if it's hot it can be a grind for sure. If you go to other destinations it will be much longer. Congrats on the permit and let me know if I can help you out. D

@danahollister4084
@danahollister4084 5 лет назад
I would say yes to the wave. Might take a couple hours to get to the first wave. It really depends on if your in shape and familiar with this environment. To the wave is pretty easy and straight forward. If you go up above the wave to those sites it gets steep and a little exposed here and there. One thing to keep in mind is that if you ever feel uncomfortable turn around. If I had kids I wouldn't think twice. Everyone is different. In short go to the wave and see how everybody is feeling. If all is good go a bit farther. Call it a day before everyone is pooped out, you still need to walk out. Have fun. Safe travel. Let me know if I can help. Thanks for watching.

Hi Sheryl. It's not bad unless it's wet or washed out after a rain. When I have been there 4 x4 has never been needed. If you are careful even high clearance isn't needed either. But that always depends on how the weather has been. It has been so dry I would think it would be fairly good right now. Ranger station is the best source for updated information. Safe tarvel.

Hi Dana, thanks for summing that up. Sounds and looks like an awesome hike. When looking at your map or track view I was wondering, what distance did you cover with that one day trip? I´m from Germany and my wife and I still have that "around the US" trip on our list. Especially because of all those unique spots in nature you can find nowhere else. The Wave seems to be another one. Maybe we can take our chance on the permit lottery in case we include Utah and the Wave. Cheers from Germany and as a sub I´m looking forward to our next vlogs. Robert.

Hi Robert. Thank you and for watching. We covered 9.5 miles. To go to the Wave and back is 6 miles round trip. If you know when you are going you can also try to get a permit on-line, that may be worth doing too. The hike is a fairly easy one to the Wave. To do the rest of the loop it is a bit of a climb but doesn't last long. If you need help in planning let me know on this trip or any others. Thanks again. D

In 2018 the Wave had 168,000 applicants for 7,300 hiking permits. Will this video make that better or worse? How you treat this place on social media will affect it more than what you do while here. Some people just have to brag about the Wave permit that they got to people they don't even know on the internet. The abuse of wildlands on social media is now the greatest threat to the canyon country. There is no shortage of information about this place on the internet. Incredible about what you missed while looking right at it. This Digital Tragedy of the Commons is a menace to the rare and fragile natural historic resources of Arizona, and yet Kanab, Utah sells the Wave permits. Utah BLM now wants to sell 35,000 Wave permits. Will that make it better? Even the Navajos threw the outsiders off of their side of Marble Canyon because social media exploitation drove white entitlement past their breaking point. They are slow to draw a line in the sand, but they're right. They really didn't care much before, but the mob driven by this social media feeding frenzy has gotten stupid just in the last four years.
