The Wavy Industries Monkey (wavyindustries.com/monkey ) is a tiny 2 octave #midikeyboard that comes with a 16 track #sequencer /looper, #arpeggiator with different styles, and a lot of built in MIDI effects (delay, stutter...). This video is a short walkthrough and also a rant on the state of bluetooth midi on Windows and Linux

Hi! I'm the creator behind Wavy Industries. Thanks for making this video Floyd ❤️ For those using macOS, there are good news: connecting up is easy:)

You almost have a customer in me, sir. The artwork alone is worth my money. However, I find the psychological hurdle of paying EUR30 to ship something the size of a microcontroller board to Canada to brings my ambition to a dead halt. You need a north american distributor.

@reingundersenbental4136 have you ever tried to sync this with a CME WIDI product ? Could be an easy way to connect this with devices that don’t have USB host. But at the end, adding a TRS A/B switchable MIDI port would put make everybody agree 😅

@@alexandrosroussos Hi, I havent tried it yet. But it has worked with all Bluetooth MIDI devices I have tried so would be abnormal if it doesnt work. Note: Monkey does not have USB either. Its a pure bluetooth device

@alexandrosroussos 3 месяца назад
@@reingundersenbentdal4136 if it is BT only then definitely would fit well with CME’s products and yes a TRS port would have opened to a much more use cases. I understand at some point you need to take design decisions though, making it unsuitable for some of the potential users.

Thanks for watching - yes, at the moment, the only hardware manufacturer that supports Bluetooth MIDI is Apple. On Android, a seperate App is needed as well, but at least that works as intended everytime. Linux and Windows? It's difficult. :-)

Windows Bluetooth MIDI will get no more hours from my life. It used to work, but then about five years ago, Microsoft broke it and won't talk about fixing it. Infuriating. Monkey looks awesome. My favourite feature is the lighthouse.

The only platform that doesn't require additional software seems to be MacOS/IOS. Android needs a Bluetooth MIDI app running, but it's a breeze compared to Windows and (RasPi) Linux.

@@mr_floydst I managed to link an electronic wind instrument to a Raspberry Pi 4 via Bluetooth 5 to send wireless MIDI but the latency was terrible! Might have to get one of those WIDI dongle things that plug into the USB.

@@mr_floydst I did not realize that Android was similarly FUBAR. It's really such an embarrassment to the industry. At any rate, what's important is that it seems most non-microprocessor hardware (eg. synths) with Bluetooth implementations seems to talk to indy BLE capable devices just fine. And indeed, the best use case I can think of for Monkey is quite literally vacation, where my baggage budget for music gear is better spent on other things.

Bluetooth MIDI is a mess in general, even on Android and MacOS. It's not as difficult to set up on those, but tends to stop working randomly. Actually, Bluetooth in general is a mess. As for Windows, I'm not sure if you're serious... That OS still doesn't support basic functionality related to normal computer keyboards, like choosing a sane keyboard layout. Bluetooth MIDI keyboards are surely much more niche...
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 3 месяца назад
Well, I'm not a Windows hater, far from it. My comment was made to set up the mild chuckle one might have when hearing the exact same words later in the video when trying to use Bluetooth MIDI on Linux/RasPi. ;-) I agree that bluetooth is a mess. For example, my bluetooth headphones, while convenient and good-sounding, fail at least once in 15 minutes, stuttering and pausing. It's just not reliable, especially when a lot of other WiFi/Bluetooth devices are around (which is the case almost all the time, everywhere)
@tuesss
@tuesss 3 месяца назад
@@mr_floydst Maybe that's why GNU/Linux lags so much in Bluetooth support - GNU/Linux users are used to things working reliably and there is just no way to achieve that with Bluetooth yet. Although I must admit the situation on MacOS looks quite good already, my headphones disconnect only once a day on average and I'm not even sure if it's Apple's fault or rather Sennheiser's. Actually, NixOS and SteamOS (my only distros with Bluetooth interfaces attached) seem to handle them quite well too except I couldn't get the mic working and gave up because I didn't need it that much. Windows, though... it is the only OS I know that can fail to detect *wired* headphones connected via normal TRS jack, requiring a reboot. I feel like there is no such thing as Windows haters, it's just Windows hating its users ;) Although most have a pretty high tolerance for random bugs.

Floyd you have 1 chance left to have a music career, you're throwing it all away by spending 90% of your time on GAS and shallow gear consumerism instead of 90% of time on producing tracks/songwriting/studying music. You don't realize that people who are really doing something can't get free time to watch this video. Every day of my life, I work on music until I'm forcing my eyes to stay open so I can get a few more minutes in. I pull 17 hour days half the week just to force the songs to get done. Sometimes I fall asleep with my head hitting the piano keyboard and wake up 6 hours later like WTF happened. You're doing the opposite of what you need to do. You just don't realize, you lost everything to this gear.
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 3 месяца назад
Thanks for your wake up call ;-) I'm going to answer as honest and open as I can on the internet. While I've seen my music getting some traction (especially with my last release music.apple.com/de/album/not-my-hyena/1657940323 ), often I'm too tired to be creative. We have young kids who are fighting their own struggles, got to help them with that as best as I can, that's the most important thing I can do in my life. Often, I'm falling asleep 8pm on the sofa, lol. :-) Another thing is I really enjoy tinkering with small gadgets and building DIY synths. The small teams or people who build these, they're full of enthusiasm and ideas. It's so nice to be a part of that. I try to spotlight DIY projects and one-man-companies. And then there's the simple fact that I need to earn some money, it's been a tough time ever since the pandemic came around. So many businesses closed down, and as I'm working in service for small to mid-sized companies, the impact can be felt. I also can see the numbers, and pure music videos never get the view count a tutorial video or gear review video gets. That being said, I _will_ release a new song here on YT next week that I think isn't too shabby! ;-) Take care and all the best of luck with your own endeavours!
