I’m a huge MJ fan, and I think The Weekend totally killed this song and MJ would be proud! The Weekends Voice is very smooth, and his falsetto is no easy task! Gifted and talented... Props to him
I remember when I first listened to Abel and one of my first thoughts was "He sounds like Michael Jackson. I wish he would do a cover." The Weeknd does NOT disappoint! I wish I could watch him live.
I have yet to see "the next Michael Jackson." When he brings the same level of raw talent as MJ did, being a brilliant songwriter, have a great voice (The Weeknd can't hit the same notes that MJ can, even WITH his superediting and autotune), and be one of the best entertainers of all time, then we can talk about him being the next MJ. The Weeknd only sings about drugs and sex most of the time, and just isn't even close to being on the same level as MJ.
the place that the prechorus sits is right on every tenors break (A flat), which makes this an incredibly difficult song to cover, but he nails it. He uses a lot of falsetto in the chorus, but The Weekend has never been much of a belter. He's like a softer new age MJ

He actually doesnt, you can tell he cant reach certain notes as well and ends up going to falsetto most of the song. He cant match Michaels grit, bruno mars did a better job at that
@@hjockzi Well to be fair this was 2011, he was on A LOT of cocaine and other drugs and had no vocal training. I think he is a much more comfortable singer now.

Not to bash the weekend, but he clearly cant maintain the same kind of power in his voice when singing high notes. MJ could sing in a high tenor but with a hard rock rasp in songs like dirty diana and give in to me then go to a warm soulful tone for songs like heal the world and speechless. Its truly something else. I think the weekend's voice is better suited for one of MJ's soulful songs like human nature.
I've been rocking with Michael Jackson since Heart Break Hotel! This is the only remake of ANY Michael Jackson song I'll listen to.. The Weeknd, you killed it! Stop sleeping on the Weeknd, Chris brown doesn't come close to this style of music! Period!
0:46 is so good especially when the drums hit it just gets me in that one dark mood that the weeknd is so good at doing this is a great cover and few could come as close as the weeknd did to have the same sound as MJ

MJ is so highly respected and so unique which makes him harder than usual to cover and pull it off. The Weekend benefits from vocals that are able to sound crazy similar to MJ, so that helps him out from the start. With newer technology today they were able to produce the track while in a way that simultaneously respects MJs version while also modernizing and making it his own just enough at the same time.
This is for sure one of my favorite covers ever produced of any songs. He did such a good job paying such respect to a legend. It's a powerful cover. Gives me chills every time I hear it. Makes me wanna turn it all the way up on a system. Mad respect.

I don't know why so many people in the comments are going along the lines of "Oh! Michael Jackson's is better, but good job!". Its not about him trying to out-match Michael. Its not him trying to be him (in otherwords, sound JUST LIKE HIM). Its not about him trying to replace him. Or take the shine from MJ's spotlight, no. The man is trying to pay tribute. To make the man's name last longer. Ever heard of dying twice? The first time you die is when you physically die and get put underground. The second time is the last time somebody mentions your name. And seeing as The Weeknd has a good amount of fame and was inspired by him, it would make sense he would try and get his name out there by doing a cover to one of his songs. To make sure MJ doesn't die out a second time. Also, if you don't like how he sings it? Why even bother listening? If you don't like it a good 30 seconds in, move on. No big deal.

This has his twist..vocals colder are darker but just as sharp and bold as mj...but the music in the background is much different I think that's why people are sooo butt hurt

Honestly The Weeknd is a legend for this song. No one else could cover Michael's song with such talent. No one compares to Michael, but this is the closest we'll ever get. Beautiful voice and amazing range
It's a nice cover and anything that pays homage to MJ is fine with me. But it also serves to highlight just how amazing MJ was-no one comes close to being able to inject so much emotion and pure energy into what they sing like MJ did. RIP MJ, you were ahead of your time and we all took you for granted.
I remember hearing a song of his on the radio and wondering if it was a postmortem release of a Jackson song. I was amazed to find out it was The Weeknd. His voice is amazing.
First time hearing this, not sure why as it isnt new. Ive got to say, this is really... really well done. Dirty Diana is my favourite MJ song and the original.. ahh, it just hits you like magic. I cant quite explain it without risking of sounding weird so im not going to try. This here didnt manage to recreate that feeling, but i dont hate it. I appreciate it. It came very very close and thats absolutely remarkable. Well done!

Let's be honest here no one can top Michael, I mean he's the KING of pop, but if anyone can sing a Michael Jackson song anywhere slightly close to the king it would be the weekend. I don't normally like when artists change or mess with Michael's music simply because it doesn't sound right and also because Michael perfected every song he ever wrote but I actually really liked the weekend twist he put in there, was very well put together and it's going on my playlist. The weekend please please please do more of Michael's music, I'd love to see what you could do with his other badass songs!
