The weight wounded it & the Judy killed it... I bought 3 hardtails and Scott Scale failed this test.

Yes! I picked up the Scale 965 recently (instead of the 950 because there was no stock) however they offered me the bike with the RockShox SID SL Select, the same stem and brakes of the 950 and it weights 12.1kg with pedals now. I will upgrade it to tubeless, full XT and MT800 disk brakes and surely it will weight ~11.7 kilograms. 🔥

I just ordered the the Scale 965 in XXL for $1182 plus tax. I am to heavy, last bike Giant Talon 1, massive reliability issues with quick disconnects seems fragile. 965 has thru axles and way more upgrades definitely worth the price point! definitely should be stronger!

@@leeeng478 Go ahead, bro, no problems with this bike yet and yes, you can fully upgrade the bike with carbon components or SRAM components with it's UDH, so well done

I updated my 2018 Chisel today: the Judy went and now a Fox SC32 Grip 2020 does the job. 340 g less, better performance and progression. Always look for good second hand stuff! Paid almost 1/3 of the 2023 aequivalent (street price as relation point). So you can buy a budget bike and save money while upgrading. And imho the most important component for a Hardtail is the fork (then the brakes and after that the wheels).

The new Scale is nicer, you're absolutely right about geometry, but I wouldn't buy anything except 950 or 945 if I were to stay to aluminium frame. They're so poorly equiped for the money... I've got a Scale 950 and replaced the fork (which was already an entry level Fox) with a Sid Ultimate from another bike. I've put lighter, thinner tires and deore brakes (600 series)... and now, it rides like a real bike. But I was happening to have these components from other bikes... were I to buy them, I'd definitely blow my budget into the realm of some nice carbon bike.

I have the 1000 bucks Merida, and besides the steep head angle, which forces you to get a 51 offset fork just for stability it's an overall awesome choice. The solutions for the frame ports for cables alone are better than anything in the same price range, and it shows how much thought the designers have put in regarding ease of maintenance. The only thing I don't like is the matte black paint job which is a dirt and dust magnet and a hassle to keep clean.

My pic would be the BMC two stroke Al 1. Got mine to 24 pounds. Upgraded to the Reba 120mm fork hunt trail V2 wheels, XT brakes, GX drivetrain, reverb dropper post, Enve M6 carbon bar, Victoria Barzo tires and few other contact point upgrades. Bike is a beast.

Always love what you have to say about bicycles. Could be an unpopular opinion but the previous scale was the best looking ever in my view. Not a huge fan of the drop seat stays. Same with the TCX and TCR, my eyes prefer the pre-drop seat stays frames. Hello from Indianapolis!

I have a Merida big nine limited official price here is 1500 euro I paid around 1200 over a year ago and I saw promo on stock bikes now in a bikeshop for under 1000! Stock it weighs just over 13 kg with pedals. I got mine down to 11.7kg with a different set of wheels and tyres/saddle/brake discs and other small stuff. Still stock (heavy) 1x11deore drivetrain.and fork I bet if I change to a lighter drivetrain and fork it would be 11 kg or less But makes no sense the stock markhor is good and I even like the cheap tektro brakes not the nicest looking but I love the feel of them.

I have recently bought a fairly long hardtail with 65,5 hta. The descents in the Alps were sooooo scary with an old school XC bike. I am really curious about this new-school frame.

The stock Judy lacks of correct lubrication. Once you do a proper service to it, it gets way better.

That's really heavy for a scott scale. My scott scale 710 plus weighs about 2kg less and it's a 2017 model, wide tyres as well. I've upgraded all the heavy parts on it over the years, carbon cranks, handlebar, stem, saddle, seatpost etc - but even then out the box I remember it being around 11.5-12kg. Strange how bikes are getting heavier!

Im not sure longer, slacker frames are what we need in XC. I got the BMC Twostroke AL in Medium (I'm 5'9). It has a similar geometry as the Scott Scale. It felt horrible to climb with the stock 60mm stem. The 67° head angle and long front center puts the wheel way too far in front meaning theres not enough weight on the front wheel. An 80mm stem improved the climbing feel but then compromised my ideal reach to the bars. Moving the saddle forward isnt possible as I dont want to compromise my pedalling position. I agree on downhills it feels very stable and confidence inspiring but for XC riding climbing capability is just as important. In the end I went with a Specialized Chisel and it rides perfectly. Its the ideal blend of progressive and traditional XC geometry IMO.

Funny I actually decided to get the BMC two stroke Al 1 over the chisel because of the same reason you didn’t like it. I prefer the progressive geometry and the slack HTA I even put a RS Reba 120mm fork slaking the HTA to around 66HTA but with the 42 mm offset fork, I have no trouble climbing at all not to mention my descending capability increased tremendously especially with the dropper post. Still have a 60mm stem on it. The only thing I didn’t get along with was the low stack height. Had to put on carbon enve 25mm rise bars. Now it’s perfect. I’m also the same height 5’9” with a medium frame. Moral of the story.. different strokes for different folks! I have no problems with my 24 pound BMC hardtail (with upgrades) and enjoy having the sexiest aluminum XC hardtail on the trails😏

@@joshuaallswang8016 I'm glad you enjoy the BMC. I wanted to like it so much. I got the AL Six and upgraded to a 100mm RS Reba RL and better wheels. I do think if I sized down to S I would have enjoyed the bike with it having a shorter front center. My chisel is size S and it climbs and descends really well. In the end I think Small bikes are my preference so it really comes down to bike fit. I will definitely keep an eye out for a size S TwoStroke AL frame in future!

The Scott Scale WON hands down (by default). I tested a the Scale and they are smooth great ride! I bought the Scott Scale 965 in XXL. the kicker was the XXL and the thru axle seems heavier duty and Merida does not exist in California. I am Heavy 270lbs and my dimensions are odd my trunk is more like a guy who is 6' 8" I am actually 6' 6" I guess I am still part VIKING! I got the bike for $1,182 plus tax the Scale bikes are cheap!!. There are Scale 965's for $899.00, online in XXL. Merida is the right product that is not available in my world! The Merida is a Unicorn!

I cannot even find Merida's in California. Locally they are Treks, Giants and Specialized. In XXL they all had quick release which are fragile especially for a big guy like myself. The Scott Scale was the only XXL i could find in stock with thru axles. The Scott Scale model was by far the best in my Neighborhood Sacramento California for $1182 tax included. Maybe hard core racers have more connections?
