This sounds like a rather special episode that would hit close to home, kind of like how the original episodes did when I was much younger. I have a dad who's jewish and a mom who's christian, so grew up with both holidays. I'll have to check this out, thanks Jordan for showing this!

One thing that a few kids shows liked to do was show the other sides of the Holidays, and I think Rugrats did a great job. As a kid you might hear about Hannukah but if you aren't Jewish, you probably only know about the menorah and dreidels. Before watching that Rugrats special as a kid, I really had no idea what it was about. I remember Arthur and Blues Clues also showing off Hannukah, but Rugrats was the only one with a big focus on it. I'm really glad to see that they've continued to show off the non-Christmas Holidays in the reboot.

I don't have Paramount+ so I haven't seen the new "Rugrats" yet but I think this new holiday episode is beautiful. Something else I've always loved about every version of "Rugrats", especially now that I'm older, is that the parents and other adult characters aren't just feeding the babies and changing diapers every time they appear on screen. They all have their own lives and personalities and situations going on. TBH, I think Didi looks more like her mom here than she did in the original version of "Rugrats".

I don't either, it's called the internet, you can easily find it to watch. And I was SUPER skeptical about the show at first but y'know? It's an amazing reboot and I thought the 3D would bother me but the funny thing is I adore it since now I'm a 3D artist myself so it feels like the show grew up with me. It's a little jarring at first but after like 3 episodes you sorta even forget its 3D. Specificaly the Jurrasic Bark-esque episode is where it picks up.

Same. The original shows art style was unique, such as the animators using a forced perspective in the drawings to convey things from a child's pov. That just seems lacking in this style, it looks more like a PlayStation cutscene
@consumeroftoons2119
@consumeroftoons2119 Год назад
@@MrOrcshaman I think this looks unique in it's own way, particularly compared to other CG shows, since it has a smulty atmosphere most other CG shows don't (Think Tim Burton, except it's not stop-motion), and the claymation esthetic appears how a child would envision the world. So, it does capture that charm but in a different light. Making the Rugrats CG was always going to be something that divides people (Even Blue's Clues and You has some detractors, even if it's a generally well received reboot), but it is a big upgrade from the old Playstation games. We're all nostalgic for those, but the babies looked super weird, and those models wouldn't age well if those games were being made today.

I haven't seen much of the Rugrats reboot since I don't have Paramount+, but tacking multiple holiday traditions in one episode is an interesting approach. Having multiple episodes on different holidays might have been more ideal as a way to provide insight into different cultures and traditions, but there are plenty of people who do celebrate different holidays and want to honor different family traditions, so showcasing the stress and struggle to find a balance to make everyone happy is a relatable conflict too.

okay now I'm confused about Grandpa Lou's past, I thought in the reboot he was supposed to be a hippy and spent the 60's in a band and going to woodstock, but in this episode he's clearly wearing Military Fatigues as pants while going to chop a tree, so is Lou a Hippie or a Vietnam Veteran? edit: upon looking at his overall character design he seems to wear those pants a lot in the reboot, so maybe they didn't completely ditch the War Veteran aspect of his character, maybe we'll see a veterans day special featuring some of his stories.

I still really enjoy the reboot as it is, but I think it would be super cool to have the OG characters as the parents and have their kids be the new generation of Rugrats. I'm hoping they somehow also decide to make an All Grown Up reboot and do that as the concept 😂 I'd personally love to see Angelica as an adult since she developed into a much nicer character in All Grown Up and see if she's actively trying to make her children better than she was or if she turned into Charlotte caring more about work than her kids

Betty being a Latina was a surprise to me, also I didn't know about Posadas, I'm from Nicaragua where some Catholics just put Nativities in their houses, but it's no longer a common tradition, I guess all this Posadas stuff is from Mexico. I just feel sad about what happened with Howard, and Betty being lesbian it doesn't feels right, Betty was a mentally and phisically strong woman, a real feminist, it wasn't necessary to make her a lesbian, actually now it feels kinda like a stereotype. Also it feels rare Lou being a Boomers and former hippie now, cuz in the Original was a Conservative WW2 veteran. But the new series is kinda funny so I'm gonna give it a chance.
@MrSupersonic2012
@MrSupersonic2012 2 года назад
I honestly had no idea about this reboot even being a thing. (Literally just discovered it through this video.) But if they had done a new Rugrats with the kids as adults with a new generation of Rugrats that would have been amazing. It'd be so cool to see the kids all grown up and how they've developed and the possibilities of what their kids could be like are limitless.
@hunterolaughlin

@@loganarnoldkicks4321 I hope she doesn’t turn into another Charlotte. Charlotte was already a neglectful parent in the original series and also a bad influence on her daughter. I mean, where else did Angelica get her demanding and bossy behavior towards her cousins and his friends? I’m surprised Drew put up with her considering they’re married in All Grown Up. If I had been Drew’s position, I can guarantee our marriage would have only last for 3 or 4 years.

Why does this feel episode feel like its more so for an older audience who might be juggling these actual situations versus the original one which focused more on easily teaching kids about the holiday? Why would it be Didi's responsibility to include Betty's tradition in HER HOME when she's already juggling 2 holiday celebrations and entertaining her parents (who she rarely gets to see). As a Latino I really really don't like that Betty is a Latina now, I don't want established characters to change for the sake of my representation. New characters that represent me is much better. @@tubguinace Their last name is DeVille in the reboot, and I'm sure they'll have original characters of various ethnicities as it goes along. It's only 14 episodes in, and there's a gameplan to introduce new characters, as well as preexisting ones. I think most of the changes were presented out of context by the media, to make them seem like they're confusing, and came out of nowhere (Kimi's reveal, and Howard's whereabouts). There is a gameplan to reintroduce fan favorite characters, and dynamics that people loved about the old show. They're just going about it a different way, since despite having the same production team, it is set in an alternate continuity, and they don't want to rehash what's already been done in the original show. This doesn't mean Kimi won't be Chuckie's stepsister, for example, but they're taking it one step at a time.

Most definitely! As a much younger kid I was a tad confused since, as a Christian, some of the celebrations touched on in the Rugrats specials fit in my understanding of stories in the Old Testament (I remember my mom having a hilarious time having to explain to me how, yes, while the Bible has the story of Moses and whatnot, we do not celebrate Passover lol) looking back retrospectively I love the insight these varied traditions have given me while reflecting on the holidays in present day. While Christmas is still the main holiday I celebrate at this time of year, I love learning about and growing an understanding of other holidays and celebrations, or variants of these celebrations, and finding ways to help my friends celebrate them.

I just watched this episode! I agree, I thought it was extremely well done. There were some great callbacks (that one kid being handed over to Santa reminded me of "Jimmy" from the episode Babies in Toyland-same character design and the reference to him having wet himself). I've said it before, Rugrats has a very special place in my heart as I grew up with it and it was a huge part of my childhood. I make it a point to watch the specials every year, including the Halloween and Thanksgiving ones. Same with All Grown Up (and Hey Arnold!). I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of this episode; it seemed way better than the others in this season so far, and I'm really looking forward to how they do the rest of the season. Also a big fan of how they made Betty and the kids Latino.

From what I gathered about this episode, while it does not change my opinion about the reboot (I still hate it), I will give it credit for at least making the effort to recapture the spirit from the various holiday episodes the original series had, even if it is still mostly just a rehash of stories that the original series did better.

This is where I'd say the new series finds it's legs. The first two batches were fine, but by this episode, and the episodes that follow it, it picks up, and goes in a direction more akin to the original series. Alot of veteran writers have written the last 10, and Rescuing Cynthia is classic Rugrats to a T.

I'm somewhat ashamed to say that I wouldn't have had any idea what Hanukah was if it weren't for the first Rugrats special. Or Kwanza for that matter. I grew up not knowing anyone who wasn't some form of practicing or non-practicing Christian. Eventually, I turned to Paganism to find my true core set of beliefs. But no one who raised me ever thought to mention that other religions existed. So I'm glad Rugrats could convey that in a meaningful way that stuck with me.

I don't know if you would do any suggestions but I do remember there being a Christmas/ Hanukkah ep with Pepper Ann call A Kosher Christmas. I remember it being pretty good with some heavy 90s things.

rugrats being jewish is literally so important to me. they’re the only ones in a vast sea of christmas episodes and vague. the thoughtfulness and sense of wonder and willingness to question “authority” (big kids) always resonated with my own idea of judaism. every time i watch a video about judaism from an outside perspective there’s also some horrific shit about the diaspora and blood libel and something something tinfoil hats in the comments. media like that is so important. even if it looks awful now i’m glad they kept their story straight there. Dead End Paranormal Park is the only other example of an explicitly jewish cartoon character being treated like a human being, they’re also trans btw : )

I wish they would have at least had Didi's original voice actor speak for Tommy's grandma. not saying in the same voice but the actress herself.

I don’t know where exactly the orginal Rugrats location was but in the first Christmas special they were clearly in a area where there was no snow but in the blizzard Episode there was snow. Funny how they rented a cabin with snow to have a white Christmas. And I can’t recall if babies in toy land episode if they had snow ( except that wonder land like place the babies were at with artificial snow) Even in the all grown up spin off they don’t have snow for Christmas LOL If the reboot is finally making it so they have snow for a white Christmas well about time

It would have been interesting to see if they could have squeezed prep for Kwanza in there as well since that starts the day after Christmas and it would also be a nice little nod to the one special they did ages ago on it. Other then that it does encapsulate the holiday stress to a crazy degree rather nicely. Even if you only celebrate one holiday during this time of year that constant stress to make it a good one can eat at people (at least when kids are involved, when their all grown it tends to be more lacks at least in our family).

I think she's biracial cause she has a niece on the show who's darker than her, and her voice actress is Cuban. Yeah this season you don't learn alot about Betty most of the time she's chillin' and saying one-liners. Except when she's breaking through walls lol

So watching this I excited to hear your take on the Rugrats Hanukkah special because to me that one along with the Passover one hits home. I am a Jewish American, similar to Didi my ancestry came from the Shtetl in the Pale region of Russia/ Poland but my relatives came more prior to World War 1 and thus only distant relatives were caught up in the Holocaust. So to see media growing up that was not related to the Holocaust was a treat because I saw myself in Tommy even though he's only have Jewish and I am full. I my not be practicing but being a Jew is much apart of my identify as anything else.

Why does Susie know about Hanukkah but Tommy doesn't? They're the same age. in the old series it would make sense for Susie to know because she was three. But now that she's the same age as Tommy and not Jewish. It comes off kind of Mary Sueish that she knows what Hanukkah is but Tommy dosent.

Completely understand, my sister and my brother-in-law are young parents they’re about 25 mostly balancing work, Kids and the holidays is always difficult even when you have two or one tradition for even more even Waukee competition soup to make the greatest pie for Thanksgiving, or making a carrot cake on Easter or heaven a wacky or we are gives fun Christmas Eve to bring a little joy or a laugh for my family so it’s understandable to see yourself as the young parents trying to I was trying to figure things out in my life and being an uncle at the same time and try to Talk to you or have fun with my niece and nephew

One of the highlights of the original 1991 version of Rugrats was its racial diversity, having specials for Hanukkah, Passover, and Kwanzaa in addition to Christmas. The 2021 reboot has followed in its older brother's footsteps by celebrating Los Posadas in addition to Christmas and Hanukkah, due to Betty being of Latina descent. Now, I personally do still prefer the holiday specials from the 1991 series, but after having seen the disaster that was A Loud House Christmas, I hoped that Rugrats (2021) could make a better holiday special for Nickelodeon, and fortunately for me, it did. While A Loud House Christmas depicted Lincoln as a Christmas humbug who sabotaged his family's plans so he could get his way and caused thousands of dollars' worth of property damage when he tried to make things right, this special depicts Angelica as someone who truly cares about her baby cousin, going as far as to save him from a goat when she makes him return the Baby Jesus that she had mistaken for her Christmas present to the Nativity scene to save Los Posadas, saying she owes him for it.

My family was religious when I was growing up, (still are, but they're chill about it) but we never really celebrated Christmas like lots of other people did. We had Nikolaus instead, since my mom's side of the family is VERY german, so we'd leave our shoes out and either of my parents would put small things like candy or small toys in them. My Opa, (still on mom's side) is Jewish. We didn't find that out recently, so we never celebrated Hanukkah, but as a kid seeing the original rugrats holiday specials was really cool to me, because I thought that Nikolaus and Hanukkah were similar. I think a handful of the kids in my neighborhood celebrated kwanzaa, and I know a lot of them celebrated Los Posadas, since I remeber standing on my apartment's porch when I was five and watching people walk by.

I have a Jewish friend who voiced that he was disappointed that the only Jewish patriarch was stripped of the things that showed his heritage before his American life as a Jew. The original could have done better of course, but this new version of grandpa is disappointing. These are my friends words and I've heard other Jewish people say similar things. Edited to give my friend credit for their words.

I miss the old designs for Didi's parents, as well as their voices and mannerisms, but I understand that they don't translate as well to this new animation style and things needed up be updated accordingly. I like the message behind this one, but I still can't get behind this reboot Doesn't feel right, and I can't put my finger on it as to why.
