TF2 has fanfiction like every other piece of media. Let’s take an agonizing look at some of these common tropes! At least, ya didn't go too deep down the rabbit hole as far as TF2 shipping fanfiction is concerned, like reading "Real People/Celebrity fanfiction". Those kinda scare me, by knowing that they exist, mainly in a "Oh, sithspit, those under 16 years old (like pre-teens) wrote most of the NSFW fanfiction involving their favorite YF2 YTers." But that's probably part of the "What the f***?!" Category.
I want a fanfiction where heavy enters the real world, and goes on a rampage after he finds out real life fast food restaurants don't accept keys as currency.
Heavy entered the Subway, getting glances from the customers and the people behind the counter. It wasn't every day that they saw a big Russian gorilla of a man with an ammo belt over his shoulder. One of the employees stood behind the counter, looking at him nervously. "Uhh.... hello sir! What can I get for you today?" He said, trying his best to keep his voice as calm as possible. Heavy walked up to the counter, looking up at the menu then at the selection of ingredients in front of him. He rubbed his chin in thought as he muttered. "Hmmm. Sandvich." He pointed to a BLT. "Will that be a six-inch or a footlong?" the employee asked. Heavy raised an eyebrow. "What?" "Do you want a long one or a short one?" the employee added, noting his accent. Perhaps just a confused tourist? "Big one!" Heavy exclaimed. The employee nodded, getting to work on the bread roll. It was all going fine until it was time to pay. Heavy reached into his pockets and pulled out a couple simple gold keys, putting them on the table. The employee eyed them, still holding the sandwich. "Uhhhhh... what are you doing with those?" he asked Heavy. "Is payment, no?" Heavy said, gesturing to them. "We... don't accept.. keys? as payment?" the employee tried, stifling a giggle to himself. Heavy slammed the table. "WHAT?!" he shouted. "WHAT STORE DOES NOT ACCEPT KEY?" The now nervous employee looked over his shoulder to another employee in the back, who shrugged. He turned back around, taking a step away from the angry Heavy, speaking again as per protocol. "We don't? But we do accept cash or card, and you can also use your phone if you-" Heavy let out an angry roar to the sky, then pointed to the keys on the table. "HEAVY ONLY HAS KEY. ACCEPT KEY AND GIVE ME SANDVICH." The other employee came out now. "Sorry sir, we don't accept keys as money here. If you continue to be disruptive we will have to ask you to leave." Heavy glared at the two, before storming out of the shop, leaving the stunned employees standing there; the one who had been holding the sandwich put it down on the table. The customers who had been distracted gradually turned back to their meals. Until something smashed through the glass door, and a distinct mechanical whirring sound filled the air. Heavy stood among the glass shards with a look of rage on his face, and his Sasha brandished menacingly. Of course it was menacing, she's a _damn minigun_. And in the hands of Heavy, the employees and customers had no clue how to react, except to run. The employee hiding behind the counter whimpered "here you can have it for free, and keep your keys too", and pushed the sandwich forwards. Heavy took a deep breath, then bellowed *"YYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!! HEAVY WILL NOT ACCEPT SANDVICH FROM CHEATING BABY MEN!!!"* Then all hell broke loose as he pulled the trigger.
If the ACTUAL Medic read that fanfic, his reaction to those words in that order would be "NONONONONONO NO FUCK NO GOD NO JUST NO" In his ICONIC panic attack German voice
I really need to vent for a moment. I always think it's a shame that some extremely good, brilliantly-written FanFictions almost never get any exposure outside the website they were posted to, if any. Most of the time, when any fan literature is brought up, it's to make fun of it. A lot of people don't believe me when I tell them I've read book-length/short Fics that are legitimately better in pretty much every way than many half-baked YA novels. There are some extremely talented and dedicated people out there, and not all of them write and publish books.
Thank you! Fanfiction gets a lot of hate when really, it’s just alerting source material. Sure, a lot of them may not be exactly...good, but some of them are really worth a read
I don’t really read fanfics but This Is Where We Are Now by PurpleComprise on Ao3 has been one of the best fics I’ve ever read. Not too sure how the fanfic community feels about x readers but TIWWAN is absolutely amazing! (It’s very slowburn, educational at times, fleshes out the relationships with the characters, and is also a Medic/Reader pairing! I probably missed something so my bad ahahajsjak)
@@energysvvord Oh, definitely. Incredible prose, excellently researched, with great character development and the right amount of drama and violence. It completely subverts everything that people assume about the X Reader genre. It's a fantastic story in its own right, and can definitely be read without its nature in mind.
Lets be real, soldier being pregnant definitely sounds in character for everyone involved. Complete lack of care for anyone involved from the Administrator? Check. Medic's complete denial of ethical medical practices? Check. Solider doing something very very stupid? Check. Says something about TF2 when the 'What the Fuck?' category feels the most believable to me.
It's still weird as fuck Edit: after becoming an avid fanfic reader, this is actually pretty normal now. I'm glad that I've looked into fanfiction & now I can see this unusual premise in a new light.
Emesis Blue is the peak example of how TF2 can get serious and even scary. I know it didn’t exist at the time this video was made, but I highly recommend it now!
Funny enough I actually use that as a coping mechanism for some of these. Like if a fic is too sad and to the point it actually hurts me or so outrageously stupid that it caused immense pain to read it, I just say Merasmus wrote it a la Ice King style and it makes me feel just a little bit better.
bruh, worst offender goes to rwby. I think the shittier the source material the better the fanfic as the author probably sees the need to 'correct' the story.
@@fintanhuttermann6452 with homestuck it's a bit different because you go through multiple phases of hating and not-hating it, me currently being stuck in one of the hate phases
“Why The Rainbows Make Me Cry” is probably the best TF2 fan fic I read. It’s dramatic origin story of why scout hates rainbows. I highly recommend the story.
Have read this, can confirm that it is a really good read. I'd say one of the best written fanfics period. It's nice and to the point more than most fics too. Honestly didn't think it would be as tragic as it was, but it was.
i can't judge Skymin for reading these fanfics because i read a lot of horrible fanfics as a dumb stupid kid. This did include one that had Shadow The Hedgehog getting married to Sandy Cheeks and Spongebob getting jealous and trying to kill Shadow.
...Funnily enough, I stumbled upon a Similar story, Though Spongebob _wasn't_ trying to kill Shadow, and was instead playing the Role of "Best Man" on Sandy's side. What Sandy had to deal with was a completely seperate problem from a Prior Relationship.
Better than me, I was reading Gravity falls, undertale and other cursed fan fics at that age that someone of that age shouldn’t read lmao. Curse you wattpad
I’ve actually read some pretty good fanfics for various franchises, including TF2, and plenty of bad ones, sometimes you need to shift through the shit to find the gold
True, I read one TF2 that was well-written, but it was way too serious for it to feel like canon. All the characters seemed to have bad attitudes more than usual, often not getting to the point of the dialogue, just irritating as hell with the banter back and forth. I just stopped and tried to find a more suitable 'fic.
To be honest(I got a voice crack while typing this) I want to see scout attempting to read immune For that one guy who has a RU-vid channel that teaches you stuff and there's a bunch of ducks
i actually have some friends who write tf2 fanfiction and i think that gave me a level of appreciation for fanfics something about fans creating more of a world they like i think is just neat
@@theabsolutechadlad5457 The first one is where scout gets turned into a toddler-via teleporter accident-and the rest of the team has take turns “babysitting” him-hilarity and warm feelings ensure. This fanfic is written by the same person who got their fic recommended at the end of this video (I’ll be home for the holidays) The latter is a very morbid and from what I remember serious zombie fic. Multiple mercenaries die by the end.
The way the voice actor delivered "engie, soldier is pregnan- *WHEEZE*" was spot on, and the other accents from the other actors did too, kudos to them
I want a fanfiction of the "Teleported into TF2" Trope, and suffering because of game mechanics. Like accidentally upgrading a sentry every time he wants to swing at the guy INFRONT of him, or smth.
I won’t lie, I still read FanFictions and I still write some of them in my free time as a hobby or such to increase my essay writing or vocabulary. Though I avoid everything I consider not my taste or weird
You shouldn't worry about it, nothing wrong in writing or reading fanfics. (It's just the reputation because of specific sexual topics that are written poorly or just straight up cursed. And as someone who reads a lot of ship fanfics, I came across a few of these in my time.) But there are equally as many good ones with a great story and choice of words who always make my day!
Oh God, does anyone else remember that fan fiction where the TF2 mercs live through the plot of I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream? And they all die horribly while the Administrator is quoting AM speeches? And there are MULTIPLE graphic Heavy Medic sex scenes? I feel like I read that in a fever dream, yet it has never left my brain.
I think I know that one! Haven’t read it because that particular author is relentless in destroying any happy emotions in their works and there’s only so much of that I can take but I’m pretty sure the fic you’re talking about is written by Cat Bountry, the same person who wrote Respawn of the Dead.
I remember reading a fanfic called the Legacy of Mann, and it's basically a crossover between TF2 and Overwatch. The mercs are frozen in "cryo" chambers until found by the Overwatch gang, but then they're attacked by Talon. I won't spoil the rest, but I will tell you Engie and Torbjorn talk sentries :) Edit: Looked up the enemy gang's name Edit 2: added parentheses to cryo because spoilers.
Author here. xD It is satisfying to see that my half finished fanfic deserves a comment and 77 upvotes in a fanfiction youtube video. Honestly, thanks. PS: There are actual vegemite sandviches in the story.
As someone who indeed likes ships and reads ship fanfics (the well written ones with 20 capters and actual plot), I came across stuff that was so cursed, I was about to delete my AO3 account and just forget about this website forever. And a specific one with Engi that made me want to stab my eyeballs with a fork
if tf2 fan fiction was realistic: i stubled across an empty town then pow ah shit i got shot in the god damn ribs somebody call an ambulance heavy gives sandvich, dont just give me a god damn sandwich help me call an ambulance
Not gonna lie... I did not expected that you would do a talk about TF2 fanfics... And when I was listening to each moment I was kinda interested... And when you came to segment with OC mercenaries... I was kinda interested where it is going... as I do write at the moment TF2 fanfic like this XD Not gonna lie... this is kinda helpful, like making some dramatic moments to make more laughtable ( like for example Spy and scout moment you said ) and such. And surprisignly that gave me motivation to continue my work. So yeah... Thanks for good video and some good content here.
Alright, this place will probably the only place I would feel comfortable talking about this. So I got into TF2 fairly recently, like, last year recently. And immediately got enthralled with the characters and world and the art style. I got so involved in finding whatever TF2 thing I could to just have more character interactions, whether canon or not, that I spent a couple days just binging SFM and GMOD vids, watching as many as I could. And from doing that, I wanted to make my own stories involving these great characters, whether written, drawn, or whatever. This has happened each time I've gotten involved in a fandom/media so this wasn't something new. My head will just fill with stories and situations and events that I want to write or something but I never do cause i'm lazy. But there is one story that I think would do really well as a animation or fanfic. What would happen if the Mercs had to go up against a creature like The Thing? Not "The Thing" but something similar? And what if the only men left alive to destroy it were complete opposites in class, personality and skillset: one professional Kiwi and a brazen Bostonian? I think if i actually wrote it it would be a good suspenseful read. Who knows
@@theabsolutechadlad5457 no problem. i occasionally get good ideas but i tend to not do anything and just let them sit in my head for all eternity. so do not be like me!
A bit of advice, I know it’s super late though, but fanfic is for fun, write what you want to see written. You can’t please everyone but there will always be someone who enjoys what you write, even if it doesn’t seem like it!
@@redactedimage Thanks for the advice, even though it's a bit late. I'm actually halfway done with the fic and a lot of people really seem to like it! I guess there was a pretty big market for people who want to read good ol' adventure/horror stories revolved around friendship rather than ship.
8:10 i actually like the idea of the OG Red Team and the blue side chars which are just OCs but it really gets fricked up when the focus goes to the OCs, like what is then the point of a Fanficition in that universe?
Yea that one's a bit concerning. I actually took a peek once since there are so many stories and i was curious what the fuzz was about. I do not wish to repeat what i experienced.
There is one actually really well written mlp tf2 crossover. I looked at it because of morbid curiosity and it's insane word count and it was... Actually really good.
There's a fanfic I read where Medic is a god. Like he's got telekinesis, can fly and teleport and stuff, probably a lot more too because he himself said that he doesn't know exactly what he can do. It was actually pretty good, fun to read. Still ongoing thou.
I once read a fanfic where the writer created nine new classes for the game, each with their own ability set. It was really good! Until... well, two of them were brother and sister and... _You probably already know where this is going._ The worst part? The sister has this incredibly adorable relationship with Scout that was cute and well written and the writer ditched that for fucking *incest.* IN. CEST. It was so good before that and then that shit happened. Killed it for me.
thank you sm for not taking the typical cynical / douchey stance when taking about tf2 fics. also this is super well made!!! yr content always amazes me :]
There are fanfiction about them, thing is other ships are more popular, so there are more fic about them, like HeavyMedic and Sniperspy, which are the two most popular ships in the fandom.
I have a TF2 fanfic with over 219k views and yet no one ever mention me at a TF2 fanfic party :( If you are wondering, its called: crystalline universe: team fortress 2
@@coyolxauhquipendejowey361Think the fanfiction was Respawn of the Dead that was written in 2009. It was an edgy heavy/medic fanfiction and that was like- the one part I remember.
A somewhat recent fanfic I found on AO3 is called Sleeping Dogs by fizzyspines and it really impressed me with how they wrote spy and scout, it’s about scout learning that spy is his dad and everyone knew this but him, except deep down he did know but refused to accept it. The author is even an artist I believe cause I stumbled across their blog once. I wasn’t expecting it to be so good cause Engie and Medic are a couple in the story and yknow shipping. I’m not really against any Merc pairing tho except for scout spy.
I remember a bunch of people were discussing a headcanon where Overwatch Characters were a grandchild to the TF2 Mercs and one actually wrote a story on how Heavy protects Zarya from Omnics with Sasha as MvM flashbacks come in. It was surprisingly good.
I LOVE WRITING TROPES! I love these videos of yours because there's so much relatability. I knew clicking on this would make me feel ashamed of myself. But being a little schoolgirl thinking about all the stories you could write about a franchise you love is just so real. It happens to the best of us. As long as you're self-aware, I respect it.
I want to mention that there’s one crossover I enjoy so dearly that I was upset that it got cancelled but it’s called “Mercs in Remnant” and I laugh my ass off that story because it’s both humorous while still retaining some of its serious moments even keeping the characters in character. I recommend anyone interested to give it a read :3
Fan-fiction is a thing for like every popular thing. That one thing you like that's kinda popular? There's fanfiction of it. It's basically rule 34 but for writing.
I've read plenty of them. There are honestly some real gems, as with anything, and sometimes in places you wouldn't think to look. Heck, there is a second-person, tenth-class x Medic fic that legitimately contains some of the best prose, development and literature-referencing that I have ever seen. That's insane.
I kinda wish people treated fanfic with more respect, but I get why most people don’t. Fanfic can get really weird, but it’s unfair that people group all fanfic together as all being bad. I guess it’s just something I’ll have to live with.
There is one series of tf2 fics that is absolutely incredible. Eight Mercenaries and a Toddler and its sequels. The characters are all written so well, backstories are explored (different to canon since most of it was written before most of the comics) AAA ITS JUST SO GOOD BUT NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT IT SO I CANT RANT TO ANYONE ABOUT IT
I once wrote a fanfiction on wattpad about Scout and Ms. Pauling date. I also wrote one where the Mercs got trap in an underwater grey mann facility somewhere in the Mariana trench and how the Mercs destroy grey manns facility and escape.
I never read fanfics, but I’ve always been imagining alternate realities to stories, whether self inserts or alternate characters or different character arcs. I only ever tried making one, back in middle school. Man, childhood is weird.
