My compliments on your work again Alex. Consider leaving a bridge in the drum valve openings to avoid fatigue due to the acting bending moment when the exhausts are shut. Should be placed in the longitudinal direction of the drum.
@shinedowncannel
@shinedowncannel 2 года назад
You mean rounded corners for the cutouts instead of 90°?
@Dymitr_Nawrocki
@Dymitr_Nawrocki 2 года назад
Yeah, bridge is good idea, even if there would be no immediate faliure, bending will speed up wear wich would make it leak more and also it will put more stress on belts.
@Jmoneysmoothboy
@Jmoneysmoothboy 2 года назад
@@shinedowncannel No. He said leave a bridge. A bridge connects two things that are otherwise separate. Rounding corners doesn't connect two separate things. Study the drums and see if you can figure out where a bridge could be inserted in order to connect two otherwise separate things. The hint is that the bridge goes longitudinally along the drum and spans the valve opening.
@brammerema1547
@brammerema1547 2 года назад
@@shinedowncannel no however, always round corners. In this case I mean to leave a ‘horizontal’ bridge in the middle of the exhaust cut out so the drum is left with some stiffness. This should vastly increase the lifetime of the bearings as well. @ Alex, what bearings are you using for the drums, ceramic due to the heat development?

I was thinking back when you were machining the dimples/groves on the inside of the rotary valve housing, that perhaps a pair of needle roller thrust bearings would have solved the problem. McMaster has them up to 160mm. NOT CHEAP. But probably could have solved the issue if you had designed the dimensions around having one on the outside of the disk and one on the inside.
@kevinpeeters1723
@kevinpeeters1723 2 года назад
Love de work and effort man! I was more of a believer in the other rotary valve. I think the problem was the inbalance of the disk at +10K rpm and a relative thin shaft. Have you considerd balancing the shaft and disk? But possible problems with your new setup: High exhaust temperatures will damage the rubber or silicone belt after some minutes of running time. Also the high temperature and normal bearings is no succes. Possible solutions: - Close the driven end of the pipe as close to the port as possible. So this side wil be much cooler. - Use ceramic bearings for this pupose. - maximal sealing between pipe and housing obtained by very small tolerances Good luck !
@JaapGrootveld
@JaapGrootveld 2 года назад
I think the in ballans was a factor, but exhaust gas pressure pulses are many times higher than inlet gas pressure pulses. And exhaust gases give a deposit on the surface that makes it stiff rather than lubricates. So very different from an inlet route where fresh lubricating oil precipitates on the surface. From a constructive point of view, there was nothing more that could be done about it. It is therefore a good step to switch to another system.
@mathewreinecke2852

To complicate things a little... you could make oval pulleys so the valve would "dwell" open, and open and close faster.

I have a new and interesting project, 2 strokes, 2 valves on head. when the piston is 70% on the lower position, the exhaust valve is opened, the exhaust create a moment vaccum when getting out into the pipe, when the piston is 85% on the lower position, the intake valve is open, putting the new air-gas into the combustion chamber, when the piston comes up, both valves are closed and after, the ignition... you can try it very easily, take a reguular 4t engine with chain valve control system, just put same size of valve control gears and change the position of the valve actuators axle. Make only one part, a valve control axle.

When you're tapping a hole you should be able to wind it the whole way in in one go. And the swarf will evacuate as long strings out of the flute. Chip breaking (in and out winding) will break the string off each time and it will get in front of the tap inside the hole. This can cause the tap to bind up and possibly break. If you are going to do back and forward because the material is difficult to tap, wind the tap right out each time and blow the hole out.
