The Benfica curse Benfica had never won the European Cup before their manager at the time vowed to win it. They won it two years in a row. Benfica then sacked him and he put a voodoo curse on the club. The curse was that Benfica would never win a European trophy for 100 years. Since then Benfica have been in 8 European finals won 0. It even got to the point that club legend Eusebio went to the managers grave to try and lift the curse. They still lost. Benfica also commissioned a statue of the manager to be put outside the ground they still lost. There is currently 39 years left of the curse Edit:He returned in 1965 and didn’t win it

Not an association football related conspiracy/curse, but rather one from Gaelic football in Ireland. In 1951 Mayo won the Sam Maguire (All-Ireland football championship). On the bus back home the team were singing and chanting, however they did not stop and pay their respects whilst passing a funeral service. As the team passed the funeral service, the priest who was overlooking the funeral placed a curse on the Mayo team which said that Mayo would not lift the Sam again until all members who were on the mayo team that Sunday afternoon had passed away. Since then, the Mayo footballers have been in 11 all-ireland finals but have not won any of them. The last member of the team died last year, aged 95 - just over 2 weeks after Mayo's most recent all-ireland runners up medal in September of 2021.

Worth checking out the full thing but here's a slightly shortened version Basically in 1969 Australia played a qualifying match against Zimbabwe and a few players consulted a witch doctor who buried bones near the goal posts and cursed the opposition team. Australia won 3-1 but didn't pay the witch doctor so he turned the curse back onto the Australian team who failed to qualify for the 1970 wc. Australia qualified for the 1974 world cup but wouldnt again until a TV host called john safran went back to Zimbabwe to do a ritual and lift the curse in 2004. Australia qualified for the next world cup and lost to italy in the RO16 to a last minute penalty and Australia has qualified for every world cup since (though it looks unlikely this time cuz we're shit)
