In this video, join my brother Steve and I as we descend the lower Westfield River between West Springfield and Agawam and explore some of its' hidden History and Wildlife. Steve leads bird tours all over the Northeast and adds his expertise in that area and others to the trip. We will examine the site of West Side's famous Ice Ring and explore the hitherto hidden Amerindian connection with video of the remains of the communities relatively unknown Fish-Weirs....Trickle Dams made by the Agawam Indians to catch the Anadromous fish that frequent the river every spring. These Pre-Historic fish weirs have yet to be archaeologically cataloged but they soon will be. Of course, there will be fishing along the way!

There’s a big weir on the ware river shortly downstream from the confluence of the swift. I always thought it from was kids or someone trying to make a dam/pool to keep the fish upstream or something.

That was built by the Nipmuc! There's another one up in Hardwick. They do look like the trickle dams kids make in streams but they extend deep into the stream bed, showing probably thousands of years of use!! I'm going to do a video on that one next season!

That’s awesome! Fascinating stuff. Are you familiar with the one I’m talking about?

@@Lou-tl6qi I am! It was the only recognized weir in Massachusetts for many years. It definitely deserves an FHP vid....and some shorts!

@@Lou-tl6qi I'll tye it in to Menemessett, the Quaboags and the events of the late 1640's where those two tribes were at war. Two Quaboags killed 5 Menemessetts and the Governor of Massachusetts Bay wanted to arrest and hang them for murder. William Pynchon the leader and founder of the Springfield Colony wouldn't go along arguing that they were not subject to either Crown or Colonial law but were independent people. Pretty cool moment.

Love the high perspective shots you get with the drone. Really helped to show the ‘ice circle’, and the Indian fish weir.

Thanks Mike. You can get some nice holdovers in that area... every spill pool could have a anything from smallmouth bass through 20 inch Brown's and Bows...and you'll probably own it too!

It's a great paddle, but Beee Careful when you get to the dam...a tough portage...and for 3/4 of a mile after there are many sandstone outcroppings that are difficult to negotiate at low water!

I met up with an otter, years ago on the Connecticut River behind what is now AAA. It was Heberts Candy Mansion back then.

I have been crawling around in the woods and fishing 4 seasons on lakes, ponds, streams, rivers and the ocean all my life and have only confirmed 4 otter sightings. I saw one last year at the Farmington in Riverton. They are WARY critters!

Wasn’t there a toll bridge near where you put the canoe in the river?
@FishingHistoricPlaces
@FishingHistoricPlaces 3 года назад
I am not sure. Originally there was a ford, and it makes sense that a bridge would have followed. The first bridge over the Ct was built between WS and SPFLD in 1803, and it was a toll bridge until the 1817 ice jam washed it away!
