During January 26th - 29th & February 2nd - 5th 2024, Steam Incorporated & Pounamu Tourism Group operated their first 'Whale Train' excursions, a new heritage rail adventure along the Main North Line from Picton down to Christchurch & return. Running 348km's in either direction, a decent amount of distance follows the Pacific Ocean with spectacular sea views from the railway. Hauling the train was 1915 built steam locomotive Ab 608 'Passchendaele' for a short distance between Picton & Blenheim and 1957 heritage diesel locomotive Da 1431 between Blenheim & Christchurch along the Kaikoura coastline. Enjoy some of New Zealand's best examples of heritage rail operating along the country's most scenic coastal railway line!
