What if alt history be like........ Gio, you getting the mold, I'm getting the cobwebs. We all do. It wasn't that they can't look back on what never was because they couldn't do what they were ALWAYS saying and really though, they should. And its because they could that they never would. And it's really a shame. They'll always put that behind them even though it does get kind of interesting as to where they all went. And it really makes you wonder why they wouldn't get back to what was certainly getting pretty prominent amongst various segments of what they understood to be true in circumstances that will find them when the time is right. Right for not knowing enough to care when there was some sort of problem with the prospect of learning more.

'AltHist really feels like he was another gifted kid that made all his high school essays very quickly in one sitting because he knew he wrote better than 99% of average high schoolers; teachers then just gave him praise without critique on his views so he became convinced he could write anything on a google doc in an hour and it'd always be facts.

I have this theory that Whatifalthist doesn't make videos the way the most youtubers would. I'm not at all convinced that he works to any kind of schedule, or that it takes him a week or longer to carefully research, script, acquire all the visual assets and edit together a video on a specific topic. I'd wager my hard earned groats that his video making process just involves him ripping a harsh bong hit and haphazardly compiling random google image searches and typing _EVERY SINGLE_ thought that enters into his mind over the course of an hour, and finally coming up with a title for it whilst coming down as he awaits the resulting ontological carnage to upload to his channel.

@ifeeltiredsleepy
@ifeeltiredsleepy Год назад
I think the wage economy definitely impacted it a lot, and birth control of course was a big part of sexual liberation though I think it's an interesting research question to think about the connections between social movements and technological innovations. Like agricultural technology improvements made industrialization possible, which created a wage economy, and women have been working in the wage economy from the start and it's inevitable that people would want more control over their autonomy when they are earning money and eventually paying taxes on it. At the same time women's equality has been a topic in political philosophy from the 15th century so we might have come to this point through separate material conditions too.

bad dialectics intensifies
@DesolatedChild018
@DesolatedChild018 Год назад
That’s because HE thinks that contemporary current day-to-day reality is boring, and is frustrated by the perception that “living in this environment made people so incurious about the world that they have no choice beyond obsess with stories settled in a common environment or something completely unrealistic”. Basically, he’s mad that people don’t believe that Spiderman is real and keep telling stories about that while they know it’s not real. Unlike the “old days” were people told fantastic stories, but believed *at least* that the world was so mystical that they could be perfectly viable. In other words, he wants myths and legends and folklore because - in his mind - they actually told something about how magical the world is, unlike the degenerate modern tradition of super-heroes that people only like as escapism and don’t believe that something just like that could be real or possible. Look, the guy called the fucking “300 of Sparta” a “slight exaggeration”, which in any other context I would call the most euphemistically way to put it, but coming from him I know that he actually believes when he says that. The mention about the necessity of “a tradition of religious narratives” by the end of the video perfectly reveals his delusion. He have a need for magical thinking, and he thinks everyone else needs it. Also is tangentially mentioned in this video, but based on other things - manly his unironic idea that Age of Empires and HoI provided a jumping point to inspire a whole generation to change the world - he most likely thinks it’s a sign of a small mind to like stories that are like, just about everyday people living everyday life and dealing with actual problems, instead of stories about, i don’t even know what to call it… A epic set in the contemporary world? If Zero Dark Thirty had the aesthetics and form of 300. If American Sniper was even more chauvinistic, and had Chris Kyle leading a full scale successful victory over the Iraqi insurgents, and then died martyred for that. A “slight exaggeration” the types Whatifalthist would most likely welcome. Btw if you didn’t, you should check the “Obsession With Mythology”; “Mystical Or Fictionalized World View” and “Hero Worship” boxes in your “How To Spot a Fascist” Identification Form - The one you receive upon gaining membership at Antifa, we all have one, it comes with the BlackBloc Uniform and the Smash The Fash Melee Instructional Tape.

If memory serves, Rosseau’s Noble Savage idea was more about how the caveman was the most “free” due to a total lack of societal and moral constraints. This is neither an inherently nor holistically good or bad thing, and it definitely doesn’t mean that Stone Age people are angels or whatever. Additionally, Rousseau was using it as a rhetorical device to illustrate a philosophical point, not as some ostensible empirical proof.
@metaxu3305
@metaxu3305 Год назад
Not exactly. For Rousseau, it was logically primary, but didn't necessarily happen in reality - it's a fondation, not an historical origin. And as such, it's not an exemple but an argument. The core idea was that the savage is "like a beast", neither good nor evil. However, for Rousseau neither good nor evil means fundamentaly good, for his implicit metaphysics are very platonician: evil doesn't exist, it's a modification/an interference with the nature of an object. After this first state of nature comes a second one, this time historical and which can be deduced from observations of the modern day savages, where people live in small communities and are healthy and happy. Corruption appears first as envy, then as private property. So no, your point doesn't work.

I just wanted to add one thing to the criticism of science as a system that currently operates (note - this is not a criticism of scientific method itself) Back in University, I was working on my masters thesis, and both me and my supervisor were initially interested in publishing my research. However, the outcome of my research was deemed "uninteresting" by my supervisor, and they said that if I wanted to publish it, I'd have to have something that would be interesting. This kinda shocked me, to be honest. I didn't publish it, but graduated nonetheless. Fast-forward a year, I'm working in the industry and I met a guy from US who worked in similar field. I asked him about my research and if they did something interesting. They said they did and... Nothing interesting really happened, so they didn't publish it. Since then I was asking similar question to some people and I was surprised to discover that this subject has been pretty well researched and tested, but next to nothing was published about it. I realized that there's a lot of unpublished work where you could absolutely say "yeah, we tried this, but nothing really happened". The thing is, this outcome can be very valuable. It's not like it's worthless, but for some reason, people don't do that and as a result we spend more time than we need to on doing research on a subject that seems unexplored, but in reality just doesn't yield any interesting results.

As a person with a bachelor's degree in cultural anthropology, I just want to point something out regarding mr Dipshits claim about Margret Mead and her research. Mr Dipshit claims she was "tricked by the natives". It is true that her conclusions have been questioned by later research, but there is a VERY important caveat to that statement. Mead did her research, which was a long stint of what is called "participant observation", in Samoa back in the 1920s. Participant observation being where the anthropologist lives in the studied society for extended periods, trying to the best of their ability to participate as a native and live according to native custom, to understand the culture from the inside as much as possible. In order for Mead to be "tricked by the natives" the samoan community with whom she lived would thus have had to put on an elaborate pantomime for literally years. Her main critic was a guy named Freeman. He went to Samoa some 45 years after Mead, seemingly with the express intent to disprove her research, as he was opposed to some of her conclusions. He did even find and interview one of meads old informants, but not only was this lady 45 years older, she, and the culture as a whole, had been converted to Catholicism since several decades. The ladies interviewed by Freeman thus had certain incentives to distance themselves from the sexually permissive society described by Mead. While it is true that some other critics of Mead conclude that her conclusions are broader than what seems warranted by her research notes, Freemans work has been broadly panned as crap by the anthropological community at large (including the guy who thought Meads conclusions weren't properly backed up) and he mainly found supporters outside of the discipline, mainly among biological determinists like sociobiologists and evolutionary psychologists.

slight correction: newtonian physics was an accepted and entrenched idea for centuries, but the fact that it was incomplete and "false" to some small degree was known basically from day one. because of things like mercuries orbit only sorta kinda matching up with where it was supposed to be according to newtonian physics. there were discrepancies betweens newtons model and reality and we knew it didnt match reality 100%, it was just the best tool available and worked pretty well in most cases. same with relativity. we know it still has areas where it doesnt match reality entirely so we know it is "false" to a degree. just a smaller degree than newton was. whichever theory will follow up relativity will likely also have discrepancies to reality, but they will be smaller still.

@jakespacepiratee3740

Marxism and Communism by extension is inherently Humanist and Athiest. This is the greatest crime by religious conservatives - the idea any philosophy could claim all people deserving of food and warmth without all the hateful bullshit Christianity has built into itself is a supreme anti-Christ-tier threat to religion. Why to you think the Nazis wanted to pretty much exterminate the Russians? It wasn’t just because of their ethnicity, it was for what they believed in too.

The "iron rule" that he's talking about is a butchering of Newton's Flaming Laser Sword, a philosophical razor which states that "that what cannot be settled by experiment is not worth debating." This is obviously dumb when applied to anything outside of hard science, and it was created in 2004 by a mathematician, so idk why he's talking about this being some iron-clad rule that governed all of society from the 17th century on. Philosophy was a very rich and abundant field until basically the mid 20th century, and there have been critiques of relying solely on empiricism since the beginning of the scientific revolution. Many of the founding figures of that movement were also themselves philosophers, like Isaac Newton for example. It really does seem like whatifalthist just reads little short snip-its about a topic and then wildly extrapolates it to all of modern history.

I know this is a small thing but I would just like to point out that on his map at 5:50, Chile is pointed out as a country that is "Communist by choice". I have a hard time figuring out if he means for this to be historical or current day politics, Egypt's history with Nasserism could be considered somewhat socialist and two of Indias states are currently controlled by communist parties so I guess that could account for their listing as "communist leaning" by his definition (somehow India isn't part of the "communist rebels" tag despite the Naxalites?), but if the point is that he is in a somewhat contemptuous tone listing Chile as communist based on their latest election, it says a lot about himself. The last election in Chile was between Boric, a democratic socialist progressive, and José Kast, a far-right anti-abortion anti-gay Pinochet supporter whose brother worked under Pinochet and whose father was a Nazi lieutenant who fled Germany during the denazification. The fact that Mr. Crack Historian here seems to like to present himself as a radical centrist kind of crumbles when it seems his hatred of all forms of social support is so fierce that he seems to forget to condemn literal fascism.

To be fair wasn't women's liberation was both social and technological? The invention of birth control and mass produced feminine hygiene products, for example, gave women far more choice over their reproductive functions and reduced the pressure of pregnancy upon a woman's position in society. I'm not super informed on this so if I'm wrong someone let me know.
@HalFromTartary
@HalFromTartary Год назад
You’re right, that technology has contributed greatly. I think AltHist was specifically referring to the Enlightenment though, which is way before technology really started emancipating women. I kinda get the sense from him that he’d be against actual liberating technologies like birth control as he might consider it as contributing to promiscuity and the decline of morals.
