You may have come across the Wheel of the Year and the seasonal celebrations such as Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Lughnasadh, Mabon, Samhain and Yule - but what is this calendar and where did they come from? As anything, the real origins are quite surprising, and I delve into the history in this video. Enjoy!

In Wales we once celebrated the liminal times, the equinoxes, they were known as the great spirit nights - Nos Calan Gaeaf for the evening before the 1st of November (Halloween) and Nos Calan Mai for the evening before the 1st of May. Due to the celestial positions at this time they have always been used for otherworldly connection, as well as avoiding these otherworldly passageways.

Thanks for sharing :) I will admit I know shockingly little about Wales!

I was just about to write what you have put. When people talk about Celtic festivals Ireland is always mentioned but noone ever mentions Wales. The people that built Stone Henge were Welsh and the stones were moved from Pembrokeshire

Thanks for describing The Wheel of the Year as a Celtic/Germanic Mashup. That pretty much sums up the state of many folks heritage and my current state of spirituality. It’s a great way to mark the seasons and focus on each part of the cycle of nature and of our lives.

The wheel of the year was the first thing I encountered when I got into wicca and witchcraft and it opened up a beautiful magical world to me. It doesn't matter if it's not ancient or a mash up of different traditions. All these traditions contain a small piece of wisdom from the Cosmos and I think it's beautiful that they came together and created what is known as the wheel of the year . I love celebrating each Sabbath.

Being new doesn’t make something invalid. Modern neopaganism is a living practice, so we should be able to adapt while respecting our roots.

@@JDMtnHayze, I second that notion. We can’t live completely in the past though. Even in ancient times they were making adaptations and blending things. As a revivalist I’m of the opinion that it’s best to stick with a historical perspective but bring it into modern times, in a way that it would have likely evolved anyhow. At the end of the day we’re all individuals and will do our own thing, just as our ancestors did. The non dogmatism is one of the most liberating things about being pagan.
@JDMtnHayze
@JDMtnHayze Месяц назад
@@jasonjenkins812 well said! I think being too individualistic can be a hindrance, but ultimately transcendence will demand both standardization, improvisation and personalization anyway. The overlap of esoteric archetypes within various cultures and traditions is profound.
@jasonjenkins812
@jasonjenkins812 Месяц назад
@@JDMtnHayze, Spot on, I couldn’t agree more. We are each our own and our spiritual practice is our own as well. That being said; the truth of things does tend to create a general consensus.

Really looking forward to listening to this! It's also hard to conceptualise what the sky looked like for them, especially here in the UK. The sky would have been an entirely different world, full of colours and endless stars!

Part 1: Your video is so interesting and full of wisdom that I am dividing my comment and viewing into two parts. I think like the ancient people by emphasizing seasons as mainly winter or summer. Spring and autumn are gentle transitions, which I also like, but they are not so important. The contrast between Celtic and our modern Gregorian calendar reminds me of the Arabic calendar called Hijra. The Hijra is also a lunar calendar consisting of 12 lunar months in a year of 354 or 355 days. This makes a Hijri year about 11 days shorter than our modern Gregorian calendar which is used in most parts of the world today since 1582 when it was issued by Pope Gregory XIII who introduced it as a modification and replacement of the Julian calendar. The Julian calendar is still used today as a religious calendar in parts of the Eastern Orthodox Church and in parts of Oriental Orthodoxy and by the Amazigh people who predate the Arabs. Your topics are very interesting . They take me deeper and deeper into the wisdom passed down from our ancestors.

Luna, did u wash ur hair from the dew of a hawthorn tree? U are a Pegan godess in my eyes. I'd have feasts over u lol. This was great. It helped me to remember that time is a creation of people coming together. There's a lot "they" don't want us to know

Thank you for sharing. I always enjoy your videos, find them accurate and thought provoking. I value traditions and historical accuracy, but i also see how history shows us the fluidity and evolution of human spirituality - so why would that fluidity and evolution end with our era? People 5000 years in the future will view us as ancient people too. Perspective i try to maintain for balance discernment.

I think it's quite interesting about Ostara and Mabon not really having and origin. It makes me rethink the sabbats. Thank you so much for the historical aspects of your vlogs, I greatly appreciate it. I always enjoy your videos ❤

I take Sabbats/Solstices off work - most countries can count them as religious holidays. Plenty of festivals happen in most countries of the world so get out there and celebrate.

The way you pronounce that old mothers night thing makes it sound a bit like "middernacht", the Dutch word for the middle of the night. And because old English and old Dutch is so related, I do wonder if there is a relation.

Very interesting look into the history and historicity of the wheel of the year. Why do you have such an interest in the traditional wheel of the year? Do you value tradition and people of history as being sources of truth or authority? Or, would you say that even if certain times like Ostara have almost no historicity, you still want it to be part of the wheel?
@Lunaleodrune
@Lunaleodrune Месяц назад
That's a really good question. I think I am interested in looking back into history to see if we have evidence from our pre-christian ancestors and whether there are traditions to be kept alive from the old times. But I don't think it's essential that everything has a real history, we can definitely follow our hearts and make new things :)

In norwegian, måne = moon, måned = month. It is strange that we never learn something as basic in school. That a month is more or less a moon cycle.
