I'm Olivia Hops and this week I talk about the link between Autism Spectrum Disorder and picky eating. I've been a picky eating my whole life and used to (unknowingly) follow the "Autism Diet" or "White Food Diet", though I'm much better now!

For *years* when people ask me what I like to eat, I've said, "I have the palate of a toddler." Just recently did I realize I'm autistic, and this now all makes sense.

I experienced significant trauma from my picky eating as a kid 😔 constantly being guilted and shamed into trying food but I would scream and writhe when someone tried to force me to eat it. I wasn’t just “overreacting” I was genuinely terrified of the food being *gross* One time I was eating McNuggets and part of the outer “skin” came off, revealing the meat underneath. I immediately thought it looked like a brain and I was so disgusted that I spit it out and had a meltdown. Didn’t eat nuggets again for like 10 years. I was bullied, called “grilled cheese girl” for my entire childhood… wouldn’t eat at friends houses, events, or field trips unless there was something simple available. It’s definitely embarrassing 😔 I remember getting laughed at for ordering fries at a Chinese restaurant. (On multiple occasions) I’m still very picky to this day and it’s a challenge. Now it’s more around the freshness of food. Or how dry it is. And if it takes long/effort to chew.

Hey! Sorry to hear about the trauma you’ve faced. I’m suspecting that I may have autism (literally have so many ‘traits’ that I have written down in my notes app, and after having spoken to my mum, realised that as a kid, I also had many traits, like not sharing toys as a kid and becoming attached to objects.) I also had/have this sort of diet. Thankfully as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more health-conscious, and so now I’m slightly more open to things like vegetables, just as long as they’re alongside what I typically enjoy eating. I can relate so much to what you said about the chicken nugget and getting freaked out by it. I have a vivid memory of being at some sort of birthday party as a child, and they were serving beef burgers. I seem to have been chowing down on it for a few minutes, until I looked down and the meat was visible. I was absolutely repulsed and terrified by seeing lots of little holes in the meat, which also made me think of a brain or an organ. To this day, I cannot physically eat a beef burger. Chicken has always been the meat of choice for me. Edit: Omg, also can relate to the grilled cheese thing. So I’m 20, and I’m at university. Basically everyday for lunch, I’ll go to the library and order a ham and cheese panini. I’m just obsessed with them, and it’s all I ate for lunch last year at uni too. I think the staff probably thought I was so weird and malnourished. I swear one lady last year actually sort of smirked a bit to her coworker as I ordered my regular. Maybe they picked up on it and think I’m super weird? Who knows. But I basically felt ashamed and avoided it for some time… until I found another place just this year that literally serves the same paninis. Jokes on them!

As the mom of an also 26 yo w/autism, I've have to adjust my approach to foods with my daughter so it didn't become a battle. I didn't want food to become a negative issue so from early on, it's been eat what you want and we'll figure this out together. As she's gotten older, she's at least trying new foods which to me is a huge deal. If her food item is out of stock, then it becomes an issue because she has a routine to her meals. Your experience with food is something I certainly can identify with as a mom. Thank you for being honest and sharing your journey.

As an Autistic 26 year old woman who didn't have this experience with my parents and my eating interests, thank you!! You are 100% going about it the right way. I didn't start trying new things until I met my husband at 19, b/c he would order things I wouldn't eat and would let me try anything of his. My parents however (understandably bc money) would make me eat whatever food I ordered, which meant I wouldn't try anything new. Jacob's approach removed the risk.

Because most people on the spectrum have damaged gut function, (this is a commonly known fact in the medical community- they say the gut is our second brain and that is where most seratonin is produced as well as other things) we are often attracted to foods that help feed the overgrowth of bad bacteria. Elimination diets and the GAPS diet (Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride) are good things to attempt even if you believe it is simply a texture issue. It may be difficult but managing to change your gut can have far reaching health benefits and improved mental clarity.

A couple ideas for people that need more protein in their diet but don't like the texture of meat. Bone broth (not stock- bone broth) actually has quite a bit of protein in it & can be used to cook a lot of foods. For people that like white, creamy texture soups cook dry white beans with meat chopped in small pieces (chicken, pork loin or beef- chicken & pork loin will disappear the best due to color) in an Instant Pot until the beans are completely soft. By the time the beans are completely cooked the meat pieces will be soft & tender also. Remove some of the cooking liquid if needed & puree the beans & meat with an immersion blender or carefully in a good regular blender. Can add butter, heavy cream, milk &/or seasoning to get texture & flavor desired. I hope this helps someone.

If I could eat just chicken nuggets and fruit I'd be fine. I don't like pasta because it's mushy (I have gluten intolerance anyway) and I can't stand certain "savory" foods because of sweetness (certain breads, american potato salad, baked beans come to mind) but I'm really curious and will try anything. When I'm more depressed and struggling to cope I tend to fall back to the chicken nuggets and nachos diet. My sensory issues are more auditory/tactile for the most part.

Extremely important one that got glossed over is being a super taster. Being a super taster makes bitter much much more intense and can also alter the way foods taste. Junk foods are usually not bitter but many vegetables are

Yet another thing that resonates. I have always been a picky eater. I like most veggies raw, but cooked? Everything about them changes. The texture is slimy, they stink up the house, just no. If broccoli even gets hot on the truck on the way to the grocery store it has a smell I do NOT want in my refrigerator. And hey, since most veggies are actually better for you raw, why should I even bother trying to adjust my tastes? Avocados? Slimy. I’ve actually gotten guacamole accidentally in a food (couldn’t see it), and I even liked the taste, but still couldn’t finish it. Bananas? If they’re SUPER firm, I can eat a few slices (especially with fresh strawberries), but then my throat closes and my gag reflex starts up. Also, it’s just the idea of some foods that turns me off. Yogurt? Something about the word just grosses me out. LOL. I can cook with it but I’m not eating it plain. (And yet for some reason I can eat pudding, so the problem with yogurt isn’t the texture.) Mushrooms? No. They just look dirty and gross. I’ve had foods where they were “hidden” in the meal (like where someone used Cream of Mushroom soup in a recipe) and liked them well enough-until I encountered an actual mushroom piece, then I was done. Peanut butter? Not the regular kind-it’s oily and…slimy. Reduced fat peanut butter is different-the texture is fine (unfortunately it’s also much higher in carbs, which is not good on my low carb diet). I like fish if it’s fried or grilled and flaky. If it’s baked it’s oily and I won’t like the texture. I’ve found that I can bake salmon until it’s cooked through, put it on a paper towel to soak up the oils, flake it up and mix it with something like a tomato/cucumber salad and I like it. Anything to get rid of or mask the oils. And yeah, the ONLY plant I’ve managed to not kill is my 30+ year old Christmas cactus, which has bloomed exactly three times in all those years. LOL.

This is one of my favorite videos of yours so far because its SO relatable to me!! I'm 26 now, went undiagnosed until 24, and I was such a picky eater as a kid. I hated black pepper and wouldn't eat anything that even looked like it had pepper even if it was some other seasoning. I would only eat chicken fingers at nice restaurants and then I would pull the breading off and eat just the meat, b/c of the seasoning. My dad would fuss at me every time. 😔 Love fruit though. But onions 🤢 I don't mind the taste, but I hate the texture so much I filter my spaghetti sauce through a wire strainer into my noodles. Hilariously enough though my male cousin who is also likely Autistic (still undiagnosed) was even pickier than I was. 😂

@@ender920 my grandma is from Lebanon and it’s her recipe. It’s pretty simple to make. They are full of cinnamon which I personally love! I serve it over some rice pilaf. I’ll list it below: - 1/2 small yellow onion, diced - 2 carrots, diced - Olive oil - 1 can (8oz) petite diced tomatoes - 1 cup green (regular) lentils, dry - 1 box chicken broth - Salt + Pepper - Cinnamon - Onion Powder - Garlic Powder - Bay leaf Sauté the onion and carrots in the oil on medium-low until soft. Add can of tomatoes, lentils, and the spices to your liking and mix to combine. Add in the chicken broth until all the lentils are covered by an inch or so and cook covered on medium-high until the lentils are soft (usually around 30 minutes for me). Stir occasionally and make sure the lentils don’t get dry. If they’re dry, add more chicken broth. It should thicken up so you can eat it with a fork, but you can also thin it out and eat it as soup, too! If you try, I hope you enjoy! :)

Olivia!!! I am so thankful I found your channel. I was diagnosed with ADHD last year, and I as of recently, have realized myself (as well as my dad) are on the spectrum. I am waiting for an official assessment, but in the meantime-I’ve been spending all my time trying to learn everything I possibly can about ASD, and reflecting on my entire life (same thing I did with ADHD). My partner (male, my age, from the same smaller midwestern hometown) wasn’t supportive about the ADHD journey. I didn’t meet HIS idea of what ADHD looked like, so he concluded that my struggles were simply because of my personality. When I got diagnosed, he accepted it. It’s like he wouldn’t believe a word I said until a professional backed it up. Now, with ASD, it’s the same thing. I have never been able to find a good way to “convince” him. I realize I shouldn’t have to convince anyone, anything…that being said….do you know of any resources to educate a NT partner/family member/friend on ASD that isn’t so clinical?

It’s so interesting to hear another perspective of food sensory overload. For me, I can’t handle squishy foods, especially if they’re cold or room temp. This makes it really difficult to eat fruits and vegetables. Bananas and anything steamed are my enemies. My parents didn’t really know how to handle this, so I spent a lot of meals in tears because I couldn’t leave the table until I finished my plate. I’m not upset at them because they were just trying their best, but I think it led to me developing a lot of issues around food and disordered eating habits. In middle school I started broadening my diet and eating new foods on my own terms, and i now eat a much more diverse diet. The trick for me was baking or ban frying veggies to crispy and covering them in seasoning and sauces. I still struggle with eating raw vegetables and basically any fruit that isn’t a berry or mandarin orange, but I’m so much better than I used to be.

I'm glad you did a full video on this because I didn't know it was an Autistic trait. I can only have milk if it's super cold; I put it into the freezer for a while before having cereal. Breads & PopTarts have to be either toasted of refrigerated, not room temperature. Pizza always has to be hot, not cold or slightly warm. I commented on your Autism & Unhealthy Habits video, but I'm not sure if you saw this reply: " This is fascinating that were so similar. My food pyramid mainly consists of bread, cereal, pasta, pizza, crackers, pancakes, cheese, & peanut butter. My friends call me a yeast-atarian because the only veggies I eat are potatoes & corn. I like ketchup, pizza sauce, & pasta sauce, but not plain tomatoes. I like applesauce, but it was incredibly weird when I tried an actual apple as an adult a few years ago. I used to eat pears & bananas as a kid, so I really should try them again. Also, I'm still upset two of my favorite cereals, Product19 & Quaker Puffed Rice, were discontinued a few years ago after being sold for decades. I got most of my good nutrition from them & now don't have as much cereal so I take a Flintstone's vitamin every day. Water makes up over 99% of the drinks I consume. I only have milk with cereal & Gatorade if I'm doing physical stuff outdoors & need something more than water. That's awesome you're a vegetarian! I've been one since I was 16. How long have you been one?" I also take an iron supplement to build up my levels because I want to start donating blood.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with food!! More videos about this are so necessary when discussing autism! It is my 20 yo daughter’s biggest issue. I personally try not to refer to her aversions to temperature, texture, color, appearance, smell etc as “picky eating”. I’d love to see a different set of words used someday. It has a negative connotation and seems to infer it’s a person’s conscious choice to not accept a particular food at mealtime, like it’s willful. I love that you mentioned it’s due to sensory issues! So many sensory challenges are misidentified, especially in school settings, as willful behaviors…and that’s sad. I would have liked if you had mentioned the term ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder), especially as your channel focuses on young adults’ experiences with autism. It is no longer a diagnosis in the DSM only for infants or young children with a feeding disorder. Awareness is so important!

You're video was a very interesting perspective from another fellow autistic. I'm 25 right and I was late diagnosed at 15 and didn't realize or got diagnosed at earlier stages. Only ate my 3 "white diet" foods; chicken nuggets, pasta/boxed macaroni, or fries. But interesting enough I've grown out of that stuck diet of mine and want all the textures and flavors (but still go back to my safe foods still)

I have never had anything close to a white diet, so it took me a long time to realize that I am a picky eater. I will eat most fruits and vegetables and enjoy flavorful foods, but I'm very particular about HOW I eat things. Cold milk is a must, but it CANNOT have ice cubes in it. If I think the milk smells funny, I cannot drink it, even if someone else tells me it's fine. I will eat the crust of pizza and sandwiches, but they have to be eaten FIRST. I won't eat spaghetti if the meat and sauce are mixed into the noodles- I have to do it myself. I only drink ice water with a straw because I hate the feel of ice against my teeth. Bones against teeth are also a no. If I find a bone or shell in my food, I can no longer eat it. Any food the texture of snot, like meat fats or tapioca bubbles, is an absolute NO. Repetitive textures are a problem, too: peanut butter on sandwich bread is overwhelming, but I can eat it by itself or on toast. The way refrigeration changes foods makes leftovers difficult in general, but if I have an off experience with a meal the night it was cooked, I CANNOT eat the leftovers. It's amazing that I didn't know this was "picky" until I was in my mid 20s.

This video is super validating, thank you! I always hated the texture of meat. And old seafood smells make me gag. I can eat fresh seafood before it starts to smell, but once it starts to get that fishy smell, its a no go. Fish is fine, but shrimp, lobster, crab and shellfish have such a bizarre texture that most times I just cant!! Allergic to dairy so that's also a no go. Thank you for the part where you explain to people that they should not criticize other people's eating habits. I have been criticized and shamed endlessly for being such a picky eater, but really the shame is on the people who do the criticizing. What do these people care what other people eat? I was at a bbq once and I was about to bite into my veggie burger and one of my mom's friends said "Eugh! you wont catch me eating that!" really loud to try to embarrass me in front of everyone. Well I decided to call her out in front of everyone. I said, "That was a really rude thing to say. Why would you say that?" She got so embarrassed, the next time I saw her, she tried to kiss my ass saying "I brought you a veggie burger this time!" SMH.

I'm 40 and I've had an infamously picky diet all my life. Nobody ever suggested it could be autism. Not even when a conversation last year with my coworkers about my picky eating habits established there was a texture issue with most of the foods I disliked. I hate the smell of tea and coffee. As a child, the aisle in the grocery store with the fresh ground coffee made me nauseous. I also hate beer and wine, which really limited my options before I became a teetotaler. I love cold milk. I drink too much Coke because it's my substitute for a lot other beverages, especially at restaurants. One sip and I can tell if it's Coke, Diet Coke, Pepsi, or Diet Pepsi. I'm very picky about water flavor unless I'm really thirsty. Zephyrhills or Deer Park is great; Dasani is okay; Nestle is awful; tap water at restaurants is usually awful (and don't you dare put a lemon in it). Fish is a no-go (texture). No chewy foods - calamari is out, steak must be lean (ex: filet) and I don't like gum. Blackened food or well-done meat just tastes burned to me, even when cooked properly. I don't like most crunchy food; exceptions are certain chips, and some cereal. I love some french fries and hate others, depending how crispy they are and how much skin is on them. I love friend chicken, but only if the breading isn't too heavy; I don't like real chicken wings because of the skin. Can't be too greasy - I like pepperoni as a lunch meat, but not on a pizza. Love ketchup. Hate mustard - even the smell. I don't have much of a sweet tooth. Dark chocolate makes me nauseous. Chocolate milk and hot chocolate have no appeal. I dislike fresh-baked cookies and most fresh-baked pies, but I love soft, fresh-baked bread. I love pizza (but grilled chicken, white onions, and garlic are the only toppings I like) and pasta, but only red sauce that isn't chunky. I like radishes and onions - two vegetables that most people hate. I HATE pineapple. I dislike all yellow cheeses. So no mac & cheese or grilled cheese (except a good arepa, if it isn't grilled too much). I wont touch most foods that look slimy or predigested: syrup, caramel, potato salad, coleslaw, guacamole, canned spinach (the smell also), tuna. Pesto is good. Salsa is good if not too chunky. On a related note: I also have a terrible gag reflex. Not triggered by food, but by things like mouth guards or that thing they stick in your mouth at the dentist so they can x-ray your teeth for cavities.

I HATE MAYO! I normally eat dry sandwiches, sometimes maybe a little mustard but mostly dry. I have texture/taste ratios that I like I can eat the same thing every time I am hungry for MONTHS! Right now it's egg beaters with Colby cheese and 2 sliced of everything bagel toast. A couple years ago it was chicken strips, EVERYDAY FOR 6-8 MONTHS! From only 1 restaurant, cooked a certain way, with ketchup. Most food I prefer is bland, too much flavor is overwelming, I can taste the can it I eat canned peas, I WOULD NEVER! As a kid I wouldn't eat ANYTHING that was mixed together, it was too much and I would rather stay hungry, I still dislike my food touching! I have some really bizarre combinations I like, CFS and I dunk it in applesauce, I CAN NOT EAT IT WITHOUT APPLESAUCE! I like sausage, egg & cheese mcmuffins, I remove the yolk of the egg and put 2 packets of grape jelly on it, I CAN NOT EAT IT WITHOUT THE JELLY & ONLY GRAPE JELLY IS ACCEPTABLE! THERE IS A LOT MORE THATS VERY WEIRD BUT I AM NOT THINKING OF ALL OF THEM ATM!

Oh, and if the dentist even ATTEMPTS to put cotton in my mouth I will vomit everywhere. I dislike dryness in general, I have lotion in every possible place so I am never without it. I chew gum nonstop, it helps with CONSTANT CRIPPLING ANXIETY & keeps my mouth from feeling dry. I can pick certain scents out. If I smell perfumes I can tell you the scents that are in it, which flowers, musk, fir trees etc. My sense of smell is very sensitive.

I have ASD level 2 and eat a wide variety of foods. I rejected meat as a child and was vegetarian until I was about 30, but I like a lot of flavours. I was mainly vegetarian for animal welfare reasons though. I have some issues with texture like I cut meat up that's in a meal really small, I shiver when I touch egg shells, popsicle sticks/wooden utensils, paper straws, kiwi fruit, peaches, stuff like that but doesn't really limit what I eat. I certainly don't like a white or bland diet. I like a lot of flavour and spices. Indian food is one of my favourites and I don't eat like a child at all, so everyone is different. Also not sensitive to food being warm or cold. I never gag in response to something I don't really like. I get that there are commonalities and stereotypes, but you probably shouldn't say "how our brains work" and things like that because my diet doesn't resemble that at all

I have aversion to very spicy food and alcoholic beverages and acidic foods like tomatoes, olives and pickles. Most of that is due to inflammatory issues. I do love pizza and pasta but because I have inflammatory issues, I can't have tomato sauce but i can have alfredo sauce. Tacos also have to be modified (i can have beef, cheese, sour cream and lettuce but not tomato or salsa however I can have cheese dip it just has to be modified) Asian food is pretty easy because whenever I have gone for chinese or Japanese or Korean, I can just pick the least threatening thing on the menu.

I'm glad despite being raised in the age of you clean your plate or you don't get up from the table my mom never did that she expected us to try one bite of something before we could say we didn't like it and she taught me how to do things like make myself a peanut butter sandwich that was one thing I did really like so if I did not like dinner she didn't make a second dinner but she did teach me how to make things that I would eat.
