Rag n Bone was in your 10 loved white stripes songs and yet you said you “don’t get it at all”, if there was such a large change of opinion I’d assume you’d at least understand the appeal of the song
Ok I thought I was going crazy. How do you go from thinking it's top 10 in their whole discography to specifically pointing it out as one of the worst White Stripes songs ever?
Yeah, but I actually like hearing some of his thoughts on specific tracks and how he feels it fits into the discographies. I wouldn’t like it all that much if all he did was plop it in a tier and move on.
Also with his get behind me satan review....which has "red rain" one of the most beautiful thoughtful songs every written in my opinion...like cmon now..."get behind me satan" and "icky thump" are beautiful albums
This is what I thought was happening when I saw this. Maybe we can get a Pink Floyd tier list since he doesn't feel like doing a worst to best on that.
Can't believe we let Anthony get away with the terrible atrocities he commits and let it slide because of the quality of his vids, it's truly a tragedy
A lot of the (weirder) songs on Get Behind Me Satan have a certain charm for me. Little Ghost, White Moon, and I'm Lonely (But Ain't That Lonely Yet) just have so much emotion to them. Jack and Meg's relationship was so mysterious and when they reminisce like this, it just gets to me. It's not my favorite White Stripes album, but I think it's got a lot of heart.
Get Behind Me Satan was supposed to not sound like Elephant. Whenever you have a hugely successful album (like Elephant) the smartest thing you can do artistically is to make the polar opposite of it. GBMS is one of my favorite albums and a lot of the songs on it, (Blue Orchid, The Nurse, Forever For Her (Is Over For Me), White Moon, and Red Rain) are some of their best and most "psychedelic" they ever got to sounding. Its definitely underrated.
@@OpaqueVisions47 No, but you should hurry up and buy one of these sleek minimalist wallets before Anthony murders your family. Then you'll really be missing something.
Hello Mr. Fantano, I'm sorry to inform you this but the icky thump seems to be out of place. You placed it in the D tier when you ment to put it in the A or B. Yours truly, 4/10
the fact that he mentioned the white stripes in a recent lets argue makes me think he's been listening to them a lot the past couple weeks so maybe his opinion changed
@@kriptodjali9235 Authorial Intent. ≠ Consistency. Also not sure what's so country about that album other than little ghost. Maybe relative to their other material you could say that.
Icky Thump is a great album and probably one of the most sonically diverse in their discography. I'd put it and White Blood Cells in S with Elephant, their debut and De Stijl in A, and Get Behind me Satan in B.
As a die-hard white stripes fan, Icky Thump is on most days what i would say is my favourite album of theirs. Maybe its just me, but Icky Thump, Im Slowly Turning Into You, Catch Hell Blues, Little Cream Soda, 300mph Torrential Outpour Blue, and Marty For My Love For You, are all imo great great songs.
Omg it finally happened. I finally disagree with the melon. Is this what it feels like? Having an independent opinion? Hmm. Should try it more often. For me personally, I like the experimental, dark and gritty vibe of Icky Thump. It’s not perfect (what is) but the 180 from the direction of accessibility to trying something different not because it would get them in the hot 100 but for the sake of experimenting with their roots at a time songs like Buy U a Drank (oof) were hitting the charts. I would have their self titled album and Icky Thump sit comfortably at C. Closes the circle of life in their discography, which can’t be said for the majority of bands. I LOVE the tier system for ranking discographies. I really enjoyed this and want to see more!
Deep Girl that wasn't a new track, it was an extra track on a moon shaped pool which was on the CD or something like that. They just decided to put it on streaming services not too long ago
I can understand Melon's take on all of these albums, especially the gradual improvement up until Elephant. But while I did not like the final two records of this band when I first listened to them, they've really grown on me. A deeper listen on the lyrics and gaining a better understanding of what Jack and Meg were going for kind of unlocked them for me. Different, and for sure lacking some of the initial draws for the Stripes, but still really good IMO
Get Behind Me Satan was recorded in jacks living room so he definitely wasn't trying to get away from the "minimalist" aspect. It's different for sure though, lots more piano and less grungy blues.
yeah id say icky thump is a solid B for me. GBMS id put at C because I got a lot of listens to that album as a kid (like, 10 year old kid) and its definitely more enjoyable than Anthony gives it credit for. But overall id say its ok.
Am I the only one who has the White Stripes self titled debut as their favorite record by them? There’s so much anger and rawness that’s so eye popping that I just love. White Blood Cells is a close second for me
I know that I am three years late, but I am really suprised to see a comment like that. I have never heard of anyone (except myself) that thinks that the self titled is the best. It's a really great and underrated album, I actually love it more than most of their work. Btw if you haven't listened to their tracks that they didn't include in the debut, you should listen to red bowling ball ruth, lafayette blues, and let's shake hands (I am sure, that you heard the third)
for what it's worth i like your tier lists better than "worst to best" because they arrange an artist's discography chronologically and more easily tell a story than just "i like this album better than this one"
I mostly agree with this list, except I'd easily put Icky Thump in B tier. The sort of throwaway experiments drag it down ("This Battle Is In The Air" is the first I think of), but songs like the title track, "Catch Hell Blues", and "300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues" could have fit onto Elephant without much problem.
Icky Thump is honestly my favourite by far. Probably because it's more experimental and varied in sound, and similar to what he did with the Raconteurs which I enjoy more than the White Stripes
Yeah nah Icky Thump needs to be atleast A Tier that album from start to Little Cream Soda is so enjoyable although I do agree with the rest. What about a Influential Nu Metal Records tier list? Just what you think the top 10 or so Nu metal albums are
I really love the one-dementionality of the self titled album. It makes it feel like they pressed record and recorded the entire album in one take. Just my feelings on it.
I agree but qotsa is boring post era vulgaris, Homme Should have experimented more with dyssonance and dark vibes instead of going full radio ballad and dadrock mode.
S - Elephant, White Blood Cells. B - Get Behind Me Satan, De Stijl. C - Debut. D - Icky Thump. Get Behind Me Satan is underrated, imo. Red Rain is one of the White Stripes best songs. Same goes for The Nurse.
A tier list for beck would be cool. I’m in the process of listening to his albums, and to me it seems like he covers a lot of different styles over a long time, not to mention it seems like everyone has a different favorite album of his. I’d love to hear melon share his thoughts
14:31 And yet, what feels like everyone and their mother now copies the "poly octave" style that he was the first to do on Blue Orchid. I agree, I'm not a huge fan of the song, but I cannot believe how modern rock in the 2010's almost completely relied on this style of singing and vocal tracking after this song did it.
You got me watching again because I've listened to all these albums but I skipped to the end to see how they all panned out to you and actually I'm different from most White Stripes fans because De Stijl is my favorite. After buying White Blood Cells and even Elephant when I bought this third or even fourth after their debut I was blown away. The blues covers are top shelf and the whole rest of the album matches that energy with its own stripped down garage rock meets the blues style. I love the slide guitar, I love Meg co-singing on "Your Southern Can Is Mine", the violin, electric or otherwise was a nice touch, and I honestly can't see why this wasn't their breakthrough instead of White Blood Cells as it did come out before.
Hey Anthony i really like this Tier List format. Maybe you could do it in a way where you talk more about each album, and maybe even rank them from WORST to BEST
For the most part, I totally agree with this assessment but with one obvious exception; personally, I absolutely LOVE Get Behind Me Satan! "My Doorbell is one of the most obnoxious songs that Jack has ever written"? WHAT?!? That song is fantastic! I LOVE those hard-hitting piano chords! I love the minimalism of the drums (I know - it's not necessary to remind me about it...) and the simplicity of the pounding piano and bass! It reminds me quite a bit of and exists sort of as a precursor to the song, "I Guess I Should Go to Sleep" and "Trash Tongue Talker" or even "Blunderbuss" from White's first solo effort and from his sophomore release, it reminds me to a certain length of "Alone in My Home" - (Alone in My Home is one of my all-time favourite Jack White/White Stripes songs!!). I love to hear Jack smashing piano chords and making amazing riffs with them!
great video, i really liked this format! now to complain about your opinions... i actually think GBMS might be my favourite white stripes album, and i know that might be an unpopular opinion. a lot of people aren't crazy about it because it's quite different from the rest but that's why it stands out to me. i appreciate the experimentation and i think there are a lot of really catchy and beautiful tracks on it. after GBSM my ranking is elephant > de stijl > white blood cells > the white stripes > icky thump (on which one of the best tracks is rag 'n' bone, FIGHT ME MELON). i'm not 100% sure about the last two, they could be interchangeable 'cause both have highs and lows and tracks that i love.
For me, Get Behind Me Satan is S Tier and De Stijl is A tier. Just two fantastic and lively records. Elephant is B, White Blood Cells is C, Icky Thump is C and self titled is D. Just my two cents. Also Melon you should definitely do more tier lists
I'm 24, teaching, studying, overcome by certain nostalgia and two of the time-machines that I'm out to salve it with, are the White Stripes discography - counting among my earliest music purchases at all - and Anthony's videos, that other foundation of my musical life. A big, random thanks to both!
Rag and Bone was my ringtone in 7th grade, I paid 99 cents of my parents money to hear “HOPE YOU GOT SOMETHIN SHINY FOR MEEEE” every time my friends wanted to go to the movies
This is a cool concept. You should do these for metal albums. Lots of metal bands with big discographies out there, that probably wouldn't be worth your while to do a "Worst to Best" on
Although a long shot, I would appreciate to see the late 60s - early 7ps band Love, their influence on the psychedelic era created some fascinating records I would "love" to see tier-listed
Love this idea for a faster discography rating system. Would LOVE it even more if you were to make a follow up video to this one where you start with the white stripes albums listed as is, and end with all of Jack Whites different solo and super group projects added! ILY
S: de stijl, self titled A: white blood cells, elephant B: icky thump E: get behind me satan How can you put icky thump in D it has catch hell blues and icky thump on it
