those hippies were petrified after THE WHO landed at monterey, almost like the first Punk band blowing hippies minds forever...Vive le WHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best live acts EVER.... I've seen Jimi, Cream, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, the Stones (yawn!) & the rest but NONE compare to the WHO live. You had to wait until the late '70's and witness the Clash live to come close to their incredible dynamism & drive.
If memory serves from the Hendrix book... Jimi and the who were both planning on burning the stage... so they flipped a coin and the who went on first. While the who took it as a violent act... jimi went to sacrifice his guitar.... Jimi owned the stage that night and launched his career in the states.
Wish I could have been there but I was 6. I think it's pretty clear Jimi was "borrowing" elements of the The Who's act but I'd also like to believe that after some initial shock and resentment all was forgiven.
Dash Riprock Guess Jimi just took it to another level. Kinda like building a better mousetrap. What's amazing is that The Who is still relevant after almost 50 yrs. Bet nobody in 1967 saw that coming....
You know, people may remember Woodstock more or may think it's better because it had more famous acts(I consider Jimi's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner the highlight of not only that event, but even the 60's). However,if there had been no Monterey Pop,it's doubtful Woodstock would have happened.
Fucking shit hot, give them their due as its the biggest life changing, biggest gig of your life, watch the drum sticks fly up while they do Substitute.Great!
I once saw an interview with Jerry Garcia of The Gratefull Dead, who played at this festival.....He thought it was hella funny cause no one could remember the Dead playing this gig. The reason nobody could recall the Dead....they ended up playing right in the middle of The Who and The Jimi hendrix experience,LOL!
The Who played then Hendrix came on and copied everything Townsend had just done eg the feedback, destroying the guitar i'm not putting Hendrix down he was a rock legend but the Who fuckin owned that stage! POW
jei2574 RIght there with you. I will say that the BBC or PBS did a Doc on the Who and Rock in general something like that back in the 90s and they have the complete version or at least a better one. Its not the full thing either but its spot on. I have it on VHS...supposedly making a 2nd run???? IN the 21st century? Now there's WTF!!
Sergio Saenz The cat was just low key compared to the other 3 maniacs in the band. But I'll bet people would sure notice if someone else was playing bass. Wait, that's not entirely true. Not being arrogant but being a musician I would be able to tell pretty easily....
+Thundergod129 Entwistle is the god of the bottom end! No one comes close! His playing said it all and you better damn well believe that you can tell his presence (or absence)! No theatrics necessary. The Who is simply not The Who without Entwistle and Moon (R.I.P)
+Ray Sauter All the bass players I know do put The Ox on their short list of all time greats. He also was the king of treble.(at least that's what me band mates used to call him) I love this vintage stuff that just has that awesome raw fury. I plan to see them in Dec. when they play in the SF bay area probably their last tour. I think Zak Starkey on drums who does a decent Moonie impression and don't know who on bass but should still be great. Pete is a freaking genius and bona fide living legend along with Roger obviously. Love talking WHO. Cheers, Tgog...
I've seen some clip of them in concert recently (Daltry, Townsend, hired extras, Etc.). Bass player was good but rather subdued compared to Entwistle which is probably just as well! If he actually tried to play like "The Ox", he would've received a good thrashing from Ox fans all over for trying to be "The Ox!" LOL
+Ray Sauter I can't believe they cancelled the rest of their North Amer. tour AGAIN!!!!!. I am SO pissed. Daltrey has viral meningitis or something. My dream of seeing a Who concert are fading. Sorry bro, had to vent....
