Pete going off on the guitar at the end WTF 😮 Two whole years ahead of Jimi doing similar stuff. Pete was definitely the leading edge of rock and roll getting MUCH edgier
John playing his Rickenbacker. Only three were sent to the UK at the time I believe. Those three sold to: John, Pete Quaife(Kinks) and Chris squire(Yes)
We are so used to seeing moon on the triple 14x8” Tom kits playing in a fully ambidextrous style we forget just how solid and skilled he maneuvers around a Ludwig Super Classic
You can really see what the band was trying to do here. What is impressive is how loud they are. The sound is very full because of how locked in Moon and Enthwistle are. Harmonies on Heatwave are nice- as is Daltrey's harp playing on the later track (Smokestack Lightening?). Townsend is very avant garde for the time
Pete is spellbinding. I mean they're all great, including what I could see of the neck of John's bass, lol, but Pete is just something special. Even at this stage you can see he's in his own world, already moving at top speed toward a bull's eye he can't really see but still believes is out there ahead of him. His musicality is inspiring but it's his intentionality & what motivates him that make him peerless. Thankyou so much for sharing this footage!
It's funny that Entwhistle and Moon were such amazing musicians that it held Pete back from becoming the incredible guitarist he is today. He's complained about having to play with them, but now that they are gone he has to step up his game as a guitarist and it really shows.
Right? Rogers killing it on the harp. All of them are killing it tho as always. Love the pounding rickenbacker bass tone I wish John Kept using rickenbackers though I can’t complain about his tone he’s always had a great sound.
Pete supposedly used a Bassman head thru a Marshall cab to record "My Generation" and most other early Who hits, this is most likely the same amp and speakers.
So heavy metal is being born before our eyes. It was Pete's idea, he talked to McCartney about an idea for a super heavy guitar riff based song. Paul went home & wrote "Helter Skelter." Pete wrote "I can see for Miles."
Oh I love those guys so much! I've had the privilege of watching The Who 3 times in the space of a year - so much energy! I love seeing this old footage. They really were incredible. I wish I'd been around then, too. Gotta love their power and innovation - they don't get enough credit for it.
They set the path for Jimi Hendrix, and are the main reason for me why I´m not interested in either metal or punk or so-called alternative. This is the original. Together with the Experience, the last real innovators in rock history.
+twezzo99 It's so good to see someone saying that they were innovative and set others on their paths. They don't get enough credit in my opinion- and although Jimi Hendrix was innovative in his own right, Pete Townshend was doing things whether on purpose or not that others latched on to later. Was it Woodstock where they tossed a coin to decide Who's on first (sorry, couldn't resist)? That showed people a thing or two...
Great stuff. This almost shows the power of volume. Keith really bashes out the beat, but as with those who do manual labor, hardly breaks a sweat. Nearing the end you the see the effect of prolonged amplification - it is body's inclination to violence- shown in Pete. Going deaf is like going numb and driven by the boogie, creates a lashing out response. All this in only 1965?
Man, Pete's 12 string Rickenbacker sounds fantastic. This was his arguably his best guitar tone- so much ring and treble, yet clear. His tone with the SG's and the Hiwatts was great too, but IMHO, this was better.
@@tonymurphy6227 No, in this video it is a 12 string. I froze the frame at 1:03 and you can see the headstock clearly. Rickenbacker 12 strings have the tuning keys arranged at right angles (I own both a '66 360/12 and a '91 360/6).
@@tonymurphy6227 Oh no need to apologize, I'm a fanatic about the early Who! In those days, Pete was smashing Ricks left and right. There is a picture of him sitting in the foreground and on the wall directly behind him are at least seven or eight smashed Rickenbackers. He started out playing the 1996 Rose-Morris import (I think that's what it was) six string Rick, they had F holes- man, they had a great sound...after he smashed that guitar (accidentally the first time), the story goes he carried on with a Rick 12 string.
@@Hiwatt100W1 I didn't know Pete had 12 strings as well as 6 strings. I love the Rickenbacker 12 string sound, and was a massive Byrds fan. Can't really push to buying a Rick, but I've been checking out the Harley Benton copy on you tube. (Wife:"how many guitars does one man need?")
Great early live footage of The Who when they were called the High Numbers and played Maximum R&B. Keith Moon is the poster boy for undiagnosed HDTD. They didn’t know what that was back then. He was hyper and he was crazed. He released an album with a picture of an Ass on it. Only thing is you can’t tell if it’s male or female. What a joker! Then he rode his Rolls Royce into a swimming pool. What a clown! 😅😊
OK, here's my tuppence worth ............ my Daughter brought a new boy home from school and the conversation was .... "Hello Mr Wheatley" (extending a handshake) "Hello Son, Georgia tells me you're into your music - 64 million dollar question ........ Beatles or the Stones?" Loooooong pause ..... ".... erm, Beatles" "Neither Son .......... The Who ........ every time!" The Who - the only band with a Lead Singer, a Lead Guitarist, a Lead Bass player and a Lead Drummer!
Wtf bruh why don’t they ever show John. I know he looks bored but damn show the man he’s dope af. Also love seeing the footage of him with a rickenbacker bass they’re my favorite. I’ve got a good quality Jazz and P-bass but my rickenbacker will always reign supreme.
@@flynncarter229 hmm just in the early days tho right? I remember Allison his first wife (I believe) said he wore wild outfits like the skeleton suit specifically so he could get the camera guys attention because they never filmed him and he wished they did
The Church of Soul is in session. Black AF, IDK why Hendrix was such a surprise in that scene later. Townsend is already doing a lot of what Hendrix did.
Samuel Feynman Tribute page 😂 I’ll go along with the genetics....but we was adorable even drenched in sweat....didn’t need the hairbrush-it’s just his mischievous young boy appearance
Looks like this was filmed roughly 15 minutes after they changed their name from the high numbers… why didn’t they show John? Pete’s Playing a 12 string here… With some of the higher strings removed so he can play leads?
The Who: I saw the difference quick amongst us young kids 13 14 year old boys and girls or clothes or attitudes and just love that Pete townshend's guitar playing
alonenjersey poor John....it's hard to take the eyes off Keith, John always seemed shy, I wonder if he didn't like the attention. Seemed like he was a bit nervous when the attention was on him....or maybe he was just surprised. It is a pity we don't see more of the greatest bass player ever....Love to the Ox!
You may be right. Then again, not much camera time was spent on other bass players from the great mid-60's bands (example: Bill Wyman, Paul Samuel-Smith, etc.) The lone exception being Paul McCartney.
By God Keith not only has a high hat but hes actually using it.I have seen him with a high hat in his later years with the Who but used it very sparingly.
Poor Pete Entwistle. The cameraman...had no clue, there was a bass player also...in the group. He thought The Who, was just a 3 piece outfit. Probably had never seen a bass guitar before. Maybe it frightened him.
