In a recent exchange on RU-vid, one guy went into great detail about a verse of scripture in which he went into the Greek translation of the words. I showed him that the context of the passage taught differently from what he was trying to read into that particular verse. He tried to impress his audience with his great ability to read Greek but by ignoring the context, he missed the mark. I forget what the passage was or what he was trying to make it say but I just remember that just reading the rest of the immediate context, I was able to make more sense out of it than he was trying to prove. Context is king.
Im in 1 Thessalonians now. It's coming together slowly as I start each new book in milestone 1. This has taken 2 years. I had a lot of problems learning Mounce alone. I switched to BWNTG at BMA and had a hard time being consistent. I stepped away for about 6 months and then restarted BWNTG from chapter 4. I finished it and began milestome 1 in March of this year.😊
Always an inspiration Darryl, always! Since deciding to take a break from Biblical Mastery I decided to master 1 John and read it through, without helps, at least a dozen or so times. What I didn't realize is how much that exercise would help me in reading other books of the Bible as well. I've begun to do the same with Colossians and will continue my way through the NT one book at a time. Thanks again for always being an inspiration!
Man I'm just happy I'm finally understanding Aorist and Present Active Indicatives. I'm able to translate the basic sentences in the Plummer Grammar. I have been apart of your program for a few short months and its coming together!!
Darryl, thank you so much for this. Your videos and channel has really helped me on my quest to read the Greek New Testament. I've been using your vocab pack and I've already completed 13 books according to the vocab pack schedule. I'm on 2 Peter now. The real value for me with your vocab pack has been the order of the books and how you curated the words to study for each chapter without repeating work already done. I've been able to integrate your resource with what my Logos 10 greek resources so I am working through each book chapter and reviewing what the grammars have to say on that chapter/ verse. I've also set a schedule to read through what I've already learnt so I remember vocabulary. Thanks again for your ministry. When I started I worked with Mounce's work and videos which were helpful but your vocab pack really gave me a workable and enjoyable plan not to mention focus: being able to read the GNT. 😊 Great video Daryl. I’ve been figuring out my own path for quite awhile now. I’ve gone through Mounce, David Alan Black, both Plummer & Merkel books. Your plans sounded well thought out and organized. I haven’t achieved mastery in any way. I tested out of several seminary courses but still mostly self studied. I’m still plugging through and reviewing things daily, just probably taking a scattered journey!
Very interested video. It was fascinating hearing your story. I studied three years of Koine in undergrad. The coursework focused heavily on translating and grammar. When we translated, we had to mark grammatical points of interest from Wallace's grammar. The education was OK. It was excellent for translating. We also memorized English glosses down to ten times. On my own, after graduation, I just began reading portions of the New Testament over and over, especially The Gospel of John. I found my ability to understand grammatically complex passages to be sorely lacking, so I began trying to memorize all the parsing for luo, which I now see was rediculous. Since, I've spent ten years studying a heavily inflected modern language, and I think I would come up with a different approach now. After already having gone through a grammar and having a basic idea, I would just memorize grammatically interesting phrases, sentences, or passages. Currently, I do this in Russian, and it helps a lot. I personally find translating from the target language into my native language to hinder my ability to internalize the language, so when translating, I would go from English to Greek. So, I would takes sentences, and sort of memorize them, by making a series of flashcards for them. I could write the entire section in English and try to produce the entire translation, but I prefer to only convert to English a word or phrase at a time that needs translated, and leave the rest in Greek. I would also make flashcards that blank out a single word. And I would also produce sentences from memory based off the first letter and punctuation (Here is an example: "A o t, I s G." -> "At one time, I studied Greek."). This is basically the current method I use for Russian, and it helps immensely. The only think missing is that for vocabulary (which is the heavy work of learning any language), I currently use fill-in the black from phrases for words I don't know, but give hints that I create in the target language, or other example sentences, or basic definitions in the target language, or images). In Koine, this may be harder to do, but some kind of cards like this need created for vocabulary as well. That's the meat of what I currently do in Russian, and what I would do in Koine (maybe once a lower-intermediate level was obtained). Other than that, you just read as much as possible.
Darryl you’re such an inspiration and tremendous teacher, I just hope in time with hard work to get to the place where I’m a hopefully half the level you are with the Greek 😬
🎉 I got to Ch6 in BBG and I realized I had to work on my english first. 😅 I'm back on track and I was pushing way too hard. +3 hr a day when I could, several times a week. The Fog settled in and now I scan ahead with summary videos then go back and read and take notes for the chapters then work on the exercises in the books. Going solo is hard but I've found some resources to help. I would like to take a proper seminary course online or not, but my current work situation makes any sort of regular scheduled events nearly impossible. Currently, I am trying to adjust my pace to a more sustainable level. It is good to know approximate time lines, maybe I bought too many Greek texts too soon. But they're there waiting for me to catch up.
Do you know the cohorts at BMA are all recorded? so if you cannot make the live version you can watch the replay and then there is the community where you are free to ask questions. So you don't have to go it alone anymore!
Great video, thank you. Read most of the Bible in my native language English. Switched to reading most of the gospels in Spanish. Started Greek one month ago and within that month I managed to learn the Greek alphabet and learn the basic greetings in Greek. Now I am trying to focus my learning of Greek with the Gospel of Matthew chapter 17. Figured start small and read one of my favorite chapters within the gospels. By any chance would there be copies which exist written in Greek the Old Testament? I only see copies in English, Spanish but none in Greek. I don't feel like learning Hebrew at this moment. Hebrew is much harder. Thank you once again for the excellent video.
I'll admit I've probably had a leg up over you, since I had already learnt Latin to the point where I could read much of the bible and commentaries in Latin. I started properly learning Ancient Greek at the end of September last year, having already learnt the alphabet and a tiny bit of grammar. I learnt a lot of things learning Latin, so I set about much the same process: I read a hell of a lot. Aside from a month I spent with Reading Koine Greek, I didn't touch many textbooks that explained grammar rules. Instead, I went through about half of Athenaze Book 1 (which is for Attic Greek and is much more challenging than the Gospels towards the end), most of Logos Lingua Graeca Per Se Illustrata (this was less challenging), 1-3 John, Philemon, about a third of 2 Chronicles and over half of John without serious explicit studying Grammar that much and using a Reader's Edition and occasionally consulting the ESV-CE. This was between the end of September and about December. By the time I had reached the High Priestly prayer, I realised I didn't have too strong a grasp of grammar, so I blitzed through Reading Koine Greek in about a month, and cracked through about a third of Mark before stopping again in Mid February. Eventually, I picked myself up again and finished Mark, Matthew, Genesis and Athenaze Book 1, before bringing it to a close with Exodus 1-20 and about 1/4 of Luke around about the middle of June. I think in future, when I get some time (I'm currently divided between teaching Latin communicatively, writing a Reader for Latin technical vocabulary, and rewriting some software I wrote to gloss texts), I'll probably finish of Luke. I also wrote software to guess at the difficulty of various texts by their vocabulary, so I may use these insights to begin reading again. The easiest book is actually 2 Chronicles according to this, so I'll probably start with 1 Chronicles and crack on with that, likely leading into 1-4 Kings.
I wish I could edit the errors in my English above, but I would like to add I used the Italian version of Athenaze because it has significantly more text than the English version, and simply ignored the Italian (I don't know Italian)
@bma What advice would you give to someone with a learning disability, such as dyslexia, who wants to learn New Testament Greek or any second language? Do you have any recommendations for techniques or programs that could help make the learning process easier for them?erson with dyslexia?
Do you have any advice for someone that wants to go to bible college for biblical studies,theology and apologetics. But has to work full time to support family. I’m not trying to be a pastor. Idk where to start? Course,classes,degrees or anything. Of course I also would love to learn the original languages as well . But I’m really confused about what my options are even after looking online
