What a classic country music performance! Dwight's voicing is like a spoonful of honey. The interweaving of his guitar picking with Jerry Peter's country piano fills is perfection. Whoopi watches so intently and with such enjoyment. I appreciate how good this is because it's unlikely I'll see a better performance.
Fricking hell, where did this come from? This is one of the best entertainment TV conversations I’ve ever seen. Did Whoopi miss her calling? She’s fantastic here, and Dwight and the pianist are phenomenal too.
I used to work in TV for many years and back in 1992 I worked for a station that aired this show. I was such a Dwight fan that I got the syndicators of the show to send me an official VHS copy of the show. I found it in a box a few years ago and digitized it the best I could. Glad you like it...it is pretty cool!!
Wow. What an incredible conversation. Dwight is a captivating character, and Whoopi does a magnificent job making this feel like an earnest conversation. Great find.
I seen this along time ago when it was released, and Oh My God , I was Blown Away !!! One of the best Interviews I've ever seen ! 🙌 Bar None !!!!☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ Dwight is a True Icon and Living Legend !! His knowledge of Music and Heritage of The Blues and Country is Phenomenal!! His Singing is Incredible! The Gentlemen playing the Piano is Extraordinary! Whoopi was Absolutely Great 👍 She drove this Vessel and it is a Treasure !!! ...The total Package 📦😍 I was Soo Impressed by Dwight's, Vigilance in gathering information and knowledge of His Craft , ..... just saying .. The way they made Whoopie Smile uncontrollable is evidence this was Extraordinary, and So Captivating!!! Later!
Thank you for sharing this video , amazing , Dwight is amazing , he didn't sell his soul to Nashville to be pop country in the early 80's like they wanted him to , instead he went to L.A. He played with punk bands . He's so open minded , he's so cool , stuck to his style then when his time came there he was on the top of his game , Dwight is legend , absolutely legend ... To me he's the Elvis of country music ! Bless you Dwight , I went to the Saint Vinnies and got all these 80's 90's Wrangler , Levi's and R.M. Williams pants with Elastane I could get hold of , Dwight is actor , musician and fashion guru legend with his classic cowboy Levis denim jacket and tight pants , his light sand fur hat and his light tan boots , simplicity spiced with classic , Dwight is the man , never follow trends that's why he's legend to me !
What a gift this piece is musically and also the conversation that unfolds. The 3 of them just going at it and with such intelligence and JOY! Dwight, Whoopi, and the fine piano player connecting. Blessings to the great Jimmy Rodgers! I will watch it again and again. Thank you!
Dang, brother, this is why I watch RU-vid. This is pure gold. You are right, how intimate it is. I am so glad you were there to rescue it and it was not lost. Thanks.
This Album as all of Dwight's music bench marks good and sad memories of my life. I am a fan of all types of music. It's just some artists grabbed a hold of my sole. This man help guide my feelings and actions. Good or bad. Thank you Dwight.
This is just Dwight at his best - full of musical knowledge, singing in his inimitable voice and style. So easy, so natural. Just love his music - and what great interplay between Whoopi, Dwight and the pianist. Thank you so very much for digging this out.
Dwight is so great on many levels: great voice, fantastic song writer, honest genuine person, great showman, very articulate and extremely knowledgeable. Have always loved him and always will.
Dwight is one of the most intelligent guys out there. I read an interview in a magazine he gave back in the 80s when he was up and coming. The man is DEEP. We can tell he is very well read and self educated. I had a chance to see him, before I even knew a thing about him in 86, and opted to go see a 60s blues band, instead. WORST musical regret I have ever had. Been kicking myself since. He was booked with Steve Earle as a newcomer too.
I adore Dwight .Fantastic singer and entertainer. Love his antics that gets all of us , his fans going. Keep it up Dwight .Kind Regards Elizabeth .Perth Scotland. 🥰🥰🥰❣❣❣❣❣❣❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Nice to read someone still knows "unknown" names like Wynn Stewart. I find it really sad that artists - no matter if musicians, actors, authors etc. - are forgotten. I sound like if I was old :D
Yes I know all about that Backersfield sound. My mom was a singer and Wynn and Merle Bonnie Owens . And Buck all worked the Backersfield country. .Shows and all would meet up at the old .Blackboard Lounge . When not touring .And sit arround and pick and Grinn . Oildale Calif. Backersfield area. Great fun for all .played shuffel Board and Pool and they danced . .I was very tinny Bonnie would hold me till I slept. Bonnie maide all the guys dibby it up. To by me presents .She'd go down the road with my mom. Pick out littrl out fits. For me . She always maid up for missing my birthday . Mom kept pics of all the good times . All are now gone .to that big concert where the circle Is never Broken. Now their all together singing in the Heavenly quire .
This is an important interview showing Dwight’s in Terence and real personality. It’s historic in what it reveals about him and country music. Such a different view of him revealing so much. Some of his best singing and a view of his personality.
Yep! D.Y. ~ def. has a certain charm to himself. i• find myself returning to this video once every coupla' weeks. Powerful haunting melodies n lyrics ~ the pianist is 'oh my' proficient. Thank you for this content.
Dwight is so well spoken and charming. The man is a genius at his craft, and such a soulful vocalist. Whoopi does a fine job asking the questions, and Jerry adds some great harmony with his piano playing. Excellent video.
Thank you for sharing. I grew up with country music, and continue my education bij listening to Dwight Yoakum. And so much enjoying his songs. Again thank you for sharing.
Now you know folks what it takes to be a legend.Just an unique voice and songwriting and a great piano player and off you go.Simple isn't it.NO ITS NOT. I loved this.
What a treat this show is for Dwight's fans. It provides a unique view inside Dwight's thoughts, knowledge of country music history, and song composition, with the guidance from someone you would not think knows much about country, but she (Whoopie) does. Thanks for sharing this.
+isleJane Glad you liked it! It is one of my favorite performances. I have been sitting on that tape ever since 1992 and just got around to digitizing it. Thanks for the comment!
Will always love Dwight! His voice is just so beautiful and the magnetism that this man has is comparable to Elvis. As if that isn't enough, he is also intelligent and humble. Whoopie did a great interview here!
What a fantastic interview! I've always loved Dwight, have seen him probably 15 times over the years and he just never disappoints. He is smart, funny, and talented to no end. Thanks for posting this clip which I had never seen.
Wow Whoopi was very at home and genuinely likeable what happened to her she changed as compared to the view bring back this Whoopi and it would be better than Ellen and love Dwight
He is so amazing and so well rounded...i just love him... and still he remains humble....he always pays hommage to those who have impacted his life... such an attractive trait!
Joyce Connolly, agree wholeheartedly. I and my whole family saw him in Tucson a few years ago, my God it was hot and he had his suit on and just played one after another, no breaks. Damn, he sounded like a juke box, no tricks just so squared away and professional. Most impressive.
Dwight is simply amazing ! I've seen him three times live here in Pittsburgh. I've been a huge fan since the first time I heard "Guitars, Cadillac's" Now pretty much any Dwight will do
Just found this accidentally. Beautiful music. True conversation rather than scripted interview. Comprehensive history,.,of music and much more. Sweet, deep lyrics. Fine piano playing. Great surprise! I'm reminded of my sister, who always picked the best music, often ahead of me. I didn't pay enough attention to Dwight until after she was gone. If she were still here, I would tell her how right she was about him!
I could listen to him talk all day long!! As "they" say, he could read the phone book!! Thx for posting this gem...I've watched it several times & I'm sure there will be more!!
T. D., thanks very much for putting in the time and effort to create this video. It is special, and I’m grateful that you realized that others (like me) would appreciate it too. I must have saved this to my RU-vid library shortly after you put it up but I never read the backstory. Pretty cool in my opinion.
OMG, that’s Jerry Peters. Love this guy, I remember watching him as a kid with Lee Williams and The Spiritual QC’s. Such a big influence of this talented man, always wanted to meet him.
I can't stop watching this. Dwight's voice...and his chemistry with this pianist...Such a beautiful song at the end...32 people giving it a thumbs down...out of 1.3K thumbs up. Who are these 32 assholes?
His Voice brings visions of smooth. & delightfully rich chocolate. Oops... Now l m starting to sound like those cheesy album reviews from Corina Corina. But Damn... I Really Feel it .
Wow, Thanks T.D. I'm a big Dwight fan & have been to 2 of his tours here in Australia. He is not just a performer but as this clip[ shows a real musician who understands the music & he covers a lot genres with his distinctive sound. Thanks again
I have been a Dwight Yoakam fan since he first came on the music scene. Simply the best! Also love Whoopi Goldberg. She will forever be Guinan to me. ❤
It’s funny how he had all that hair hanging out the back of his hat, And underneath all that he was going bald...he’s the best always one of my favorites...
Love, love, love this interview. I’ve been obsessed with Dwight for a while ever since I’ve seen Sling Blade. I know him more from his acting then music but I definitely appreciate his musical talent.
A great video . Thank-you for sharing . I live in Miss. visited Memphis many times . An hour away . Love the self taught Dwight . Love listening to all his stories . Little brother Dwight could talk all day & night , I would be listening . My son Dan loved to talk like Dwight . Missing Dan always . ~~Ava~~ Love his singing @ 6/12 well all of his singing :)
+Sweetpea027 I'm a Mississippi boy myself & other than Dwight, my favorite artists mostly recorded in Memphis (especially Stax). What an awesome piano player here! Love his touch.
