The Wii U was Nintendo's eight generation video game console that was released in 2012 ...and it wasn't very good. Follow for updates: HyperCharge_Sam?l...
If the Wii U was good for anything, it would be the virtual console. It somehow became my gateway to the metroid series after I bought Super Metroid on sale for 30¢. I then transitioned to Zero Mission and Fusion. If not for the Wii U, then I'd probably not be a Metroid fan today.
This is why I have no Switch. A lot of shit that was great is now gone: - no free online - no old games to buy (you can only 'rent' them and only the ones they feel like at the moment) - They are just porting shit lately having hardly any original titles - drifting
When the wonderful 101 is ported over to the switch, please record yourself throwing out the wii u!! Love this video, by far the best wii u critique/ripping I've ever seen
@Walther Penne The switch has twice as much RAM, and a MUCH better octacore CPU compared to the anemic trash that was in the Wii u, so i don't know how the switch wouldn't be capable of "hardware acceleration". Nearly every single game on the Wii uwas ported over just fine and improved upon, so I don't see why they couldn't port over the wonderful 101.
I will say the off TV play was hugely appealing to me as a kid due to the fact that growing up I basically only had access to one TV in my household because my family were... Not exactly super wealthy. Off TV play has its uses
Hypercharge you’re one of my favorite channels, which is surprising to me bc you came out of absolutely NOWHERE when RU-vid recommended your Wonderful 101 video to me... And I’m grateful every day... and I’m sappy bc you UPLOADED something, I’ve been blessed
I was searching for videos explaining "why the zelda timeline sucks" and found his 45 minute explanation of exactly that. That's how I discovered Hypercharge.
@SuperNobody64 You look it up at Google, and it is described as a "tabletop system." Oh, and guess what a portable game system actually is. Try to connect two and two together.
You know, you see all these people on the internet talk about underrated games, and not a single soul will tell you about the Wonderful 101. It's literally the most underrated hidden gem in probably the past 10 years and it's a shame.
You can like whatever you want, but from what I have seen The WiiU is just flypaper for resentful hipsters that love to be into a non mainstream console, the switch is better on every metric
The advertising for the Wii U was also horrible, not just because they had cringy adds for it, but mostly because they also made it seem like the console was for kids, by having little tiny ass midget 7 year olds Star in the commercials. While the switch’s advertising was much better, because they actually had some older adults on there commercials. Because of that, it makes adults feel comfortable with buying the console, and it makes children want it more because supposedly “it’s what big kids have.” You get my point here
Just once I'd love a video game retrospective video on RU-vid that wasn't mostly exaggerated yelling about why it sucks, but besides that this was pretty enjoyable.
Novembermann first off its *youre Secondly, I knew someone like you would have replied saying some dumb shit like that. Idk what it is with that video and dickheads like you shitting on it. It an entire trolljob from him. His entire channel has been this way for years. Idk maybe theres a lot of left wing SJW’s or right wing snowflakes who play smash cuz you guys seriously have a problem.
It’s a nice thought to think Nintendo stuck with the Wii U to not piss off their loyal fans. But in truth, the Switch just wasn’t ready yet. If they could have bailed in 2015, they would have.
On one point you seem a little out of touch. The "I'll just move it to my bedroom TV" was not an option for a good majority of people. The scenario you described as completely unlikely of a family having one TV is really not as unlikely as you seem to think it is.
The Wii U was a pretty dark time to be a Nintendo fan despite having stuff like Mario Kart, Splatoon, Smash 4 and a few other games. 2016 was the worst of it because at that point Nintendo had given up on it and the only game I got that year was Paper Mario Color Splash. Which was a game that I used to be angry about because of all the bad things I've heard about Sticker Star but I ended up liking.
Good news Wonderful 101 is coming to PC, PS4 and Switch thanks to a successful kickstarter Platinum created. So happy that this game is finally getting a second chance
Nintendo got what they deserve with the Wii U : they were lazy and hoped they could surf on the Wii's wave of success, but it never happened and they lost a lot of money. The only good thing is that it paved the road for the Switch.
@@BigSmokeMUFC I think it's work in the blank. They were aiming for casual players but since those weren't interested in buying a brand new console for the same thing as the Wii (almost), they kinda had to readjust their plan, which took a lot of time. They should have known better but they were greedy (as they always are, just look at the Nintendo Online Membership lol).
I clicked on this video as a Wii U fan thinking it was going to say proper things about it. I was just met with some troll in the corner of the Internet unappreciative of great consoles.
Hey man, just wanted to say your channel is one of the best gaming channels on youtube without a doubt. I always look forward to your content. I hope you are never discouraged just because you aren't huge.
You are one of the only people who can just drop a 45-60 minute video and I'll just watch all of it. It's always a treat to see a new video from you on my feed. I think it's refreshing to see someone with similar thoughts to me on these games. I hate the fanboys who justify Nintendo's stupid actions. At the end of the day it comes down to good games and you understand that. You know, the Wii U era kinda sucked, but with the complete lack of new games it gave me so much time to actually play some retro games that I never got around to in the past. It's inexcusable on Nintendos part for this situation even happening to begin with, but at least the Wii U had some great VC titles especially when it extends to the Wii Mode. In the last few years with the Wii U I got to play the Metroid Prime series for the first time which was amazing, as well as stuff like Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Super Metroid, Kirby Nightmare in Dream Land, and Ocarina of TIme. I even got to actually play DK64 and realize how disappointing it actually was. It was kind of a nice system to pick up some old games that I couldn't really have easy access to otherwise as well anymore. I liked this aspect to it (despite the choice to not have Gamecube titles being stupid). Like how are you going to sell Wii Games on VC when they're already backwards compatible, but pass up on Gamecube titles? The Switch had a really strong start but in honesty this last year has been a bit disappointing to me, and it's only been amplified with the online bullshit. I feel like they've been using Smash Bros all year as a way to justify literally nothing else worthwhile coming out and people just eat it up because its Smash Bros. Yeah, it's great, but its felt like as far as first party goes, it's been just that. The port spam has almost been insulting too as a Wii U owner, it feels like half their new games are just games I've already played and they just ignore making actual new titles. Then to top it all off, no VC is kind of a middle finger to me. They've recently added NES games to justify purchasing Switch Online, but honestly? Who cares about NES games. Maybe I'd feel different for SNES/GCN titles, even 64 games, but really, NES games is it? The marketting of the Switch and actually getting 3rd party support is refreshing at least. The gimmick is cool too, and I'm glad there seems to at least be a future for it because of 2017. But in honesty, I feel like this last year has also been pretty lacking on first party games also. btw, I agree with you on The Wonderful 101. I don't like it as much as you it seems, but it was a really enjoyable experience that I've even recommended to other people. Baffling how it didn't sell more, it even got cut to $30. I'd probably buy it again if it were ported to Switch, and I haven't even been buying the ports outside of Mario Kart because I really love that series and wanted the new content. Splat2 and Smash aren't really ports, but I do get what you mean that they don't feel super super different. They are definitive versions though.
I've been really enjoying the Switch so far, but the whole online situation is definitely a huge blunder. If they don't introduce some more interesting titles for their online service, I think I'm just going to not pay for it. I don't mind Wii U ports that much, but that's mostly because the Switch has a lot of support from other companies this time around, so I've been pretty happy with the games so far. I think the whole "port/not port" discussion doesn't really matter that much, because really, Splatoon 2 and Smash Ultimate were designed to be the definitive versions of their respective Wii U titles. I mean, obviously, their both technically new games, but they also borrowed A LOT from their Wii U counterparts. They were all built up with the previous games as a foundation, so it sort of falls within this weird grey area depending on how much "new" stuff there is. I mean, the first Smash Bros direct just straight-up confirmed the entire roster of Smash 4 within the first five minutes, and besides Link and Zelda, the rest of the cast has some pretty minor tweaks and changes (in comparison to the changes between Smash 64>Melee>Brawl>Smash 4). It's definitely has a lot of new content, but it also more of the same.
What do you think about the Wii U's 3rd Party support like Ubisoft's Rayman Legends which was originally planned for release in 2012 as a Wii U exclusive but ended up getting delayed and being ported to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013 and eventually to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014 and now a "Definitive Edition" on the Nintendo Switch?
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was ported to the Switch and had the same graphics engine as Super Mario 3D World. TT on Wii u had Wiiu exclusive features that the Switch doesn't have. They made the controls work on the Switch.
The Wii U was great. It just didn’t catch on. To say it was bad is completely false. Nintendo assumed people had brains, and should of been able to see it was a different console.
What was funny in hindsight is while they made garbage for the Wii U the 3ds was doing circles around the park. Like everyone I knew had a 3ds. I literally never bougut a Wii U because Smash 4 came out on 3ds first so then I went "Why would I buy it again when I can just go to someone's house to play that version?"
The funny thing is the 3DS was very much in the same position the Wii U was in when it launched, but Nintendo was able to throw enough games at it to make it successful.
@@HyperCharge That is also why I think Nintendo misunderstood how to blue ocean properly. You NEED big gamer titles to make positive word of mouth then sneak in the lazy shit in between to make money. You can't just ignore the big games because they don't make the money they give you a good rep.
While I love dragging the Wii U nowadays, it's scary to remember how depressing it was to be a Nintendo fan back then. I'm glad the Wii U's failure gave them a kick in the ass to make the Switch, which is fucking awesome.
WHAT!!! But the problem is the Wii U is Wayyyy better than the atrocity that is the Switch! Don't get me wrong,I LOVE the portability of the Switch and it's hybrid nature but it's game library is awful with lackluster sequels like Splatoon 2 and Yoshi's Crafted World and an over saturation of ports that add virtually nothing and feel soulless.
I'm so fucking glad Nintendo changed back to the good red and white logo which actually is nice to look at, rather than the white and grey "Who the fuck messed with the colour choice of this design? Because I can't see shit" logo during the Wii and Wii U era.
Holy Shit! It's fucking AWFUL! The incentives for the service are incredibly weak and Nintendo is essentially shaking people down for 20$ in order to continue to play games online. The inclusion of the NES games is laughably worthless, where as the cloud saving feature should be a free feature. Of course, it's a pretty good price for a year, but the only reason their doing that is because they know their service is absolute shit. If it included some more virtual console stuff, like SNES/N64/Gamecube games, that would be pretty good, but currently, it's basically just a fucking scam.
You know, when they were talking about the service in the latest Nintendo direct, they mentioned a "Special Bonus" later down the line, and I think that will most likely include something along the lines of a virtual console experience. Maybe access to x amount of games per month, or something like that. At least, that's what I'm HOPING for.
HyperCharge I honestly doubt it, considering there’s a monthly release schedule already laid out for their next NES games which they unironically think are interesting enough to wait for. I’m expecting a N64 classic before SNES games ever hit the Switch
You know, im happy that you Hypercharge chose to make something original insted of becoming like another one of those cookie cutter vloging channels. (with there doofy looking hair cuts.) sure you might have more subscribers but you would have just but you would have just blended in with the crowd. So what im trying to say is thanks for being original.
Back in like 2013, this system may not have had a ton of mainstream games that justified the purchase, but it was worth buying for Pikmin 3 and The Wonderful 101 alone. Also, is it a coincidence that the two best games on the system both revolve around controlling a ton of characters? Now that it’s 2021... just get a switch, W101 Remastered and Pikmin 3 Deluxe are there for you alongside the games everyone actually cares about
Yeah I recently found your channel and pretty much binged all of your videos I love them so much, I really hope you're making a retrospective on the switch because I would love watching that!
I remember that initial reveal day and remember being like WTF Reggie. I figured it was a new peripheral at first until my head scratching made me go deep dive to discover it was in fact a new console. Didn't get one.
A lot of Nintendo Land's games were actually pretty enjoyable. You could even unlock interactive statues and figures, which were placed in the central plaza area. But most of the fun comes from the multiplayer. Having to use the controller of another console in order to play with a friend was a little disappointing. Of course for people like me who already had a Wii, this wasn't too big of a deal. But if you didn't then you either had to go buy a Wii or be unable to play two player, which sort of kills about half the game. I list the Wii as a requirement because who the heck buys _one_ controller but not the console to go with it? Nintendo Land is the only game I've ever played that had two player functionality but only if you also owned the previous console. To be fair though, the chances of a person owning _two_ Wii U Gamepads just so they can play with a friend in a game that came out like the day before is pretty slim. It's more likely that they'd have a Wiimote.
"I've never seen a console get shafted as hard as the Wii U" Ahem Vita and DreamCast and possibly the GameCube got shafted just as much because they did half-assed ports just to be anti consumer and screw off customers with lack of new games. All of those consoles are underrated and great.
The DreamCast and GameCube weren’t anti-consumer. Mainly because the Saturn and N64 didn’t do too hot. They got blown the fuck out of the water by the PlayStation.
The main difference is that the DreamCast and GameCube got fucked by the PS2, which was a monster, not even the DS could outsell it, and that thing had like 3 revisions. Those were completely different situation, both DreamCast and GameCube had good games, some of which were only playable in said consoles, for YEARS. IIRC, not even the vita was treated as badly as the Wii U, at least the vita had its share of games appealing to the japanese market
@@DocTime56 The GameCube is unfortunately so shafted they won’t even rerelease it’s games on the Virtual Console or Switch Online. The DreamCast had its games ported pretty much right when the Xbox & GCN came out. But that doesn’t stop the Dreamcast from being great. The Vita was also shafted because its games were ported to PS3 and PS4 as Sony dropped the handheld market. But once again the Vita is also underrated. All 4 (Wii U, Vita, GameCube, Dreamcast) of these consoles are extremely underrated.
Loved the system. Ads sucked. Lack of third party wasn't all Nintendo fault, the overall gimmick sometimes worked and sometimes didn't...making me wonder how good this would've done if it was just an add on for a Wii (obviously a Wii Pro if they ever made one lol). Glad they kept lots of cool little apps like the Wii had (although not as charming) and unlike the switch though which doesn't even have menu music...why Nintendo?!?! Anyways I'll always love my Wii u and lots of its games...except for those like Amiibo festival, Paper Mario colour splash, and Starfox Zero which are pretty garbage. Sadly this wasn't gamecube era Nintendo. They done goofed some series (killing Paper Mario entirely unless they revive it). One last thing. Hardcore Nintendo fan here...yet I forgot the Wii u existed until late 2015 (only slightly heard of it in like late 2011 or early 2012 and thought it was the next handheld Nintendo console lol. I swear I never heard or saw this thing anywhere (not even in stores) until our friends got it one day and we instantly fell in love. 2014-2015 was its last chance and it's prime time and then it died hard and fast. This is just my summed up rushed thoughts lol
