THE WILDE-TUNED ROCK HARMONICA

"I designed the Wilde tuning specifically for playing hard rock and blues-rock on the harmonica. As much as I love the standard Richter tuning, I have always found it frustrating when it comes to playing “rock guitar” style licks, particularly in the upper octave. The Wilde tuning addresses all of the problems I had with Richter, whilst still retaining the bluesy feel of classic second position harmonica that we all know and love.
Whereas Richter tuning was primarily designed for playing major chords and the major scale in first position, Wilde tuning is specifically designed for playing second position minor pentatonic and blues scale licks, throughout all three octaves.
I have always preferred the sound of draw notes and draw bends to blow notes and blow bends, as you can get more expression and a better tone & vibrato from them. So, on the Wilde tuning ALL of the draw notes bend (from holes one to ten) and your root note lands on a draw in all three octaves.
Holes one to five are exactly the same as standard tuning. Holes six, seven and eight are the same as holes two, three and four (just an octave higher). Hole nine is the same as hole two (just two octaves higher) and the reeds in hole ten are reversed (so that what was a blow bend is now a draw bend). This makes fast minor pentatonic/blues scale runs much easier and means you no longer need to overblow/overdraw to get the flat third and flat five in the upper octave as they are now available as simple draw bends.
I think that the Wilde tuning is the configuration that every aspiring rock harp player has been waiting for." Will Wilde

Hi Will... Love your stuff man, but in any creative area it's right and respectful to acknowledge ones sources. One thing I think you should mention here, and in other publicity for your Wilde Tuning, is that it was inspired by PowerBender/PowerDraw. As you know, you got in touch with me on Facebook back in 2017 about my 10-hole tunings, and I sent you a couple of free harps to try out: a PowerBender and a PowerDraw. You liked them a lot, and we had some good back and forth discussion about the plusses and minuses of different variations. In the end you decided to keep some important elements of PB/PD in the Wilde Tuning. For example, making the middle octave home note in 2nd Position a draw instead of blow (hole 6) as on PowerBender. Also the top end of your tuning is identical to PowerBender/PowerDraw. I like the variations you came up with in the Wilde Tuning - they gain some things and lose others, as we discussed. But, looking at the tunings side by side from a strictly analytical angle, the inspiration from PowerBender/PowerDraw is obvious - even if we hadn't specifically discussed all this together in a friendly way back in 2017. Personally I think it would be ethical to give credit where it's due when you are discussing where Wilde Tuning came from, especially when it's from a mate and fellow harp player who has treated you well. However you don't mention the real history once in this video, which is a bit disappointing...
@willharmonicawilde
@willharmonicawilde 4 года назад
Hi Brendan. I totally agree with you. I'm sorry I didn't mention it in this video, but I have talked about your Powerbender and Powerdraw tunings and how they were key to the evolution of this tuning in other videos, and at several Workshops/Q&A sessions. Perhaps I should make a video about the three tunings and how your tunings inspired mine?
@BrendanPowerMusic
@BrendanPowerMusic 4 года назад
Hi Will, I really appreciate your good-natured reply! Thanks for letting me know you have acknowledged the PowerBender/PowerDraw influences on Wilde Tuning in other places. No need to make a special video about the connections; just mention when appropriate (as you say you are doing), and that's enough. Everything is an evolution: after all, we both owe Mr. Richter big time as well :) Love the recent video you did with Elin - real class, in every way, and it shows off the Wilde Tuning really well. All the best! Brendan

So, I get the benefit of having the 'G' and 'B' as draw notes on Holes 6 & 7 but could you expand on your reasoning for the new blow notes for these Holes? I would have thought an 'F' on Blow 6 and 'A' on Blow 7 to be a better arrangement. Yes, the new tuning maintains a consistency with the lower octave but there would be much better control of Hole 7 with only a strong semi-tone bend . Also, an 'A' Blow at that Hole would be nice when you modulate to the V chord. Overall though a good option for pentatonic work.
@willharmonicawilde
@willharmonicawilde 5 лет назад
Good question... The blow notes are tuned the way they are to allow the draw notes in those holes to bend to the degrees that they do. I wanted draw 6 to bend a full tone so that you can bend it down to (or up from) the flat 7. The Repeated G on blow 7 means you can still play your root note as an octave (now a three hole tongue block- what used to be blow 3&6 octave is now blow 3&7) Also the fact that draw 7 bends up to a tone and a half (just like draw 3) means you can get a much wider vibrato on that minor third bend. I can assure you i have thoroughly considered the layout of every note on this harp and tested countless configurations, this is the one that works best for me. Check out Brendan Power's "Powerbender" tuning, it is closer to what you are describing, I think you might like it.

@willharmonicawilde

Pretty easy. The half step bend on draw 7 (for the flat 3rd) takes a little bit of practice not to overshoot , but apart from that it's no different to bending any other draw note.

So are you playing mostly a mix 1847 Richters and Wilde tuned Session Steel harps then? Or are your 1847's Wilde tuned as well? Overall I rather greatly prefer 1847's to Session Steels myself, and it seems you do too? I'm wondering why did you go with the SS for the Wilde tunes line rather than the 1847?
@trentmason009
@trentmason009 5 лет назад
I was wondering the same thing! I thought it might be because Seydel knows people are more likely to buy the Session Steel for an altered tuned harp because it is less money than the 1847. Maybe it is better if Will plays the ones that people can more readily afford and/or want to purchase?

Is there a tuning that lets you play power chords?
@willharmonicawilde
@willharmonicawilde 3 года назад
You can do them on standard tuning. A power chord is just the root and the fifth, so if you're playing in second position draw 2 is the root and draw 1 is the fifth. So draw 1+2 is your I chord as a power chord. For the IV and V chord you need to learn to do a 1 hole tongue split (like an octave) but where you just block out one hole in the middle with the tongue, so blow 1+3 would be your IV chord, and draw 4+6 would be the V chord. I'm not aware of any tuning specifically designed for playing power chords.

@@garysellars8914 Hi Gary, it looks close indeed. Holes 1 to 5 and 8 to 10 are identical with both tunings. But holes 6 and 7 are different. And with PowerDraw you dont have the root note in 2nd position on your 6 draw. PowerDraw is identical to Richter from holes 1 to 6. I too play PowerBender and I love it, but some classical blues licks do not flow as well as on Richter. Especially triplet licks like 4d' 4d 5d .
