Watching Freamon's mentorship of--and later partnership with--Prez is one of my favorite parts of the seasons one through three. You can see the real affection and respect between the two when Lester comes to visit Prez at the school, too.
And not just Prez, Syndor, Carver, McNulty, Greggs all got the Lester bug. Cool Lester smooth was like King Midas, because every badge he touched turned into natural POlice.
Huge Foreshadowing here: Prez wrongly marks this as not pertinent information but gets corrected by Lester. Later, he again marks a call not pertinent information -- and this mistake costs Wallace.
Something that always amazes me about The Wire is how much story they can tell in a short space. There were much longer scenes and sequences in Season 1 when they had fewer characters, and scenes seem to get progressively shorter as the seasons went on. But look at this in S1E6. Just two minutes and 14 seconds, and without ever feeling rushed, they: - Show Bodie returning to the Pit and scanning it in confusion - Bodie pages Stinkum - Herc observes and calls the office - Prez and Lester get ready - Herc asks to speak with Carver - Herc tells Carver that Bodie is back - Bodie and Stinkum have their entire phone call - Prez logs "non-pertinent" - Lester explains why the call should be logged "pertinent" - Lester states the show's mantra In other words, in just 2:14, they advance three stories (Bodie's return, the Detail's investigation, Herc & Carver's rivalry with Bodie) at essentially three locations (the Pit, the police perch overlooking the pit, the Detail's office) while adding character development for Lester and Prez. That is true economy of storytelling.
It's really five words, if you add in that half uttered "alright" at the end. But yes, Clarke Peters has an amazing voice and delivery - might be my favorite character ever on TV.
When he says we’re building something here it’s not just about the case but a commentary on the show. The show was being built from scratch and every episode every season mattered
Exactly. I always stress to people that if they decide to watch The Wire, they need to fully invest in the experience. This isn’t the kind of show you watch while doing laundry or dicking around on your phone.
It's crazy, the ice cream truck melody we hear in the beginning of this video is almost identical to Omar's iconic whistle. I wonder if this was done on puropse and if so, the attention to detail in this show is next level.
This is the second or third time I've seen something like this: someone posting multiple comments on a video that look like part of a completely unrelated private conversation. It's kind of creepy in a way. Anyone else ever come across things like this?
