That is America in a nut shell. Doesn't matter your reputation, if you have enough money, people will at the very least allow you to get your foot in the door.
@buster560
@buster560 5 лет назад
That's anywhere, it's not unique to America infact the US is most likely the least biased country in the world despite what you may think.
@jonesjay515
@jonesjay515 2 года назад
That actually isn't America. I believe that the whole point of this scene is to show how these destitute and criminal minorities still believe in preconceived notions about America. The cops can't wrap their minds around them letting him still play, because in their minds (and in the minds of the people who actually run this country) the idea of letting him still play is unfathomable. Why don't you try to get a job as a top 500 CEO with a criminal record? These positions don't hire certain people because of the college they went to... The opportunity provided in this country can be real for a very tiny amount of people, but the vast vast majority of Americans will die in the same economic/social class they were born into. It's all a lie perpetuated by the people at the top to keep the people at the bottom subservient.
@FreePlayMode
@FreePlayMode 2 года назад
@@jonesjay515 the entire hip-hop industry disproves your point. The vast majority of those people come from criminal and violent backgrounds. However, as long as you got the money to play the game, America will at least let you get your foot in the door.
@jonesjay515
@jonesjay515 2 года назад
@@FreePlayMode So because .1% of aspiring musicians can make money suddenly America is the land of opportunity? Lol. Sounds like you've bought into the lie way too much. Heres a fact, regardless of your personal decisions and aspirations, you are vastly more likely to die in the same social/economical class you were born into. Get over yourself

Good old capitalism! I first took it as if he was implying that America is the land of rugged individualism- aka it's every man for himself while he's snatching crumbs and running this rat race in a dog eat dog world. But still, America is all of the above, the land of opportunity and the land of opportunists, the land of freedom and the land of free dumb, the land of milk and honey, a melting pot for culture, and a beacon of hope for everyone else around the world.

ok... and on your DVD the commentary for this scene is what? Because I'm sure it's the same. Describe it in your own words then. On my DVD David Simon says that the "It's America man" line in the context of this scene is about how people that don't have access to the legitimate economy create their own realities.
@robotding1
@robotding1 17 лет назад
Hey did anyone actually work this case? I know McNulty got pulled off to do the case on Barksdale, but even before then it didn't seem like he was working the case. Or did he close the case at the scene with that witness?

When he says "it's America man" he is talking about a concept of what America is that only he and those in his environment buy into. The reason it's so funny to McNulty is because his concept is so off. Its all about how those who don't have access to the legitimate economy create their own realities.
