''Americans are a pretty stupid people by and large. We pretty much believe whatever we're told.'' This line.. it feels like David Simon speaking directly through the character. It always stood out to me how on-the-nose and out of place it is in this scene... it's unlikely that in that situation the detective would have chosen to generalize the American people, as opposed to corner hoppers, or any other subset of people that could've fit the bill. There's a few jabs here and there that are like this during the series, but this one REALLY stands out and pierces the screen. I think they knew that and left it in anyways. I get that this was paired with the end line ''The bigger the lie, the more they believe.'', but that one is an example of Simon's commentary meshing seamlessly with story frame, while the first one really isn't. It's almost like ''Do you get it now you stupid bastards?''. No show ever came close to this one.

Randy snitching set off the whole story for the rest of that season and the rest of his life… little Kevin getting took because of it, Randy house getting burned down, bodie getting arrested out of anger because of little Kevin, then getting picked up by mcnulty and seen by monk, then getting killed by Michael. Crazy. It’s all connected.

"The bigger the lie, the more they believe." That sets the theme for this entire season. Seriously, think about it. One of the focuses is the Baltimore Sun and media reporting. The reporter, Scott Templeton, frequently falsifies quotes to make his stories seem better, but as the season progresses, the lies start to get bigger and bigger. Once his stories begin to gain traction, he pretty much stops at nothing to gain coverage. But as his lies grow bigger, so does his popularity at the Sun and even in the outside world - he's invited to a national talk show, and even ends up winning a Pulitzer at the end. But it was based almost entirely on bullshit. And then, you have the police angle with McNulty. McNulty literally creates a serial killer by manipulating bodies and evidence for the purpose of screwing the department and the city, and to get more funding for the department in general. At the beginning, everyone ignored his serial killer angle. But as he spread the bullshit through the press and got more elaborate in the manipulation with Lester, all eyes focused on him and the Homicide unit. As the lie got bigger, everyone believed it more, and they eventually got what they wanted - overtime, new patrol cars, etc.
@MRWINDYMETHANE
@MRWINDYMETHANE 7 лет назад
Nick L. But as Jimmy McNulty has said, he knows why he did what he did, and that was to get Marlo Stanfield behind bars, whereas in Scott Templeton lied just for a damn medal.

This is one of the best fucking scenes of any tv show of all time. First, the season, which is about crime journalism, opens up with a sequence that seems Bunk is being interviewed by some reporter, but in fact he's scaring the shit out of some idiot that killed someone in an alley Then the cops take advantage of the criminal's ignorance in order to get a confession, representing how degenerated is the situation of modern law enforcement agencies in deprived towns "The bigger the lie, the more they believe": That line summarizes the entire season

You'll find that in the majority of that time when it comes to all major subjects, that includes, math, science, technology, language arts, etc... the United States rarely ranks in the top 20 let alone the top 10 in any of them. We are amongst the least innovative 1st world countries in the world right now.
