Frank is my favorite tragic villain. He was doing the wrong thing, but for the right reasons. It was never about money or power, it was about all the union jobs that would be created by the Grain Pier. Had things gone differently, he would have succeeded, and the neighborhood would have flourished.
@@earldouglas4645 That's the game. Someone has something you think is yours. They have to go. Just like everyone else did. But ? Not everybody is like the others.
This montage is far and away one of the greatest moments in television history. It's brilliantly done and just absolutely gorgeous. The part with Avon in the court is just perfection.
Marlo was never the King until Avon made it so. He basically gave him the hookup to the Greek connect. Without Avon, Marlo wouldn't have gotten the connect from Joe. Even still Avon was King from inside. When he came home is boy Slim Charles had the connect when Marlo sold it. His time as King was shorter than dwarves.
zero I'm sure Avon didn't have anyone killed for "talking back". Or because he "heard" he was a being called a dick sucker. Doesn't matter, like I already said Marlo wouldn't have gotten the connect unless Avon gave him the blessing. Sergei otherwise would never have talked to him. He wasn't "King" until Avon said so. Case closed. Refute that!
he killed people just so d angelo would speak to him in prison. its shame you got head too far up avon ass to pay attention to the entire point of the show. all the the drug dealer were pretty much the same with only slight differences
Such a powerful montage, strangely my favorite clip was when Carver walks into the gym and looks at Cutty. I think that's the moment Carver finally realizes what Colvin was talking about when he said policing is more than just bashing heads, it's about being tight with the community. That gets me every time, like he truly became "real police" after the events of season 3, in stark contrast to Herc who never saw what it was all about.
@@positivevibesandmorelife7307 if that's what you took from that story arc, i think you need to be reminded of the whole theme of the wire... it's never just one person's fault, there's a ripple effect of ongoing factors, and those that want to help find themselves unable to. I think that was the point with Randy and Carver... Carver was the only one that cared about Randy and truly wanted to help, but they still got beat. It was all summed up after Carver drops Randy off at that last orphanage, and Carver breaks down in his car. He realizes the futility of everything he did.
@@JustAnotherBlader dude carver was going to randys house after the one altercation and putting police offers over there for nothing really but like you said the ripple effect
Funny how a lot of us wound up hating Bodie after Wallace in Season 1, but then we began to like him or at least respect him; he was a soldier and all heart. Great acting.
MateoKalifas420 True. It was sad because this is his last montage of him on the corner. It means nothing the next season because he's just the next dude to get killed on the streets. Fucking depressing.
Bill as cold as that was, Bodie didn’t even want to kill Wallace...dude was just a soldier following orders...he represented imo the loyal person/working man who still believes in the American Dream. Loyal to the idea of a greater cause even though it no longer exists
The song is about how fast life passes by. Avon telling the story about String stealing the badminton set. Then looking over his shoulder to where Sting used to sit in court kills me.
@@nateajv12 one person's theory was that Brianna wasn't even there and it was in Avon's head and that's why she disappeared when he looked back but not sure how true that was
@@fatalxdecaay2817 The Wire didnt play TV like that. There were no opening sequences that were "just dreams", nothing imaginary, nothing voertly expalined. Tt was real and right there if you wanted to find it. It broke their hearts to be forced to use the flashback of William Gant in the courtroom. That theory is compeltely misguided, Im afraid.
Season 3 really is a masterpiece. It's about two men on opposite sides of the law making big changes for the good of the world around them. Those two men being Stinger Bell and Bunny Colvin, Stringer was trying to reform the drug trade, and for a while, no violence was happening and they were making more money than before. Colvin was trying to keep the streets clean, and by moving the dealers to Hamsterdam, not only did it keep the streets clean but it made the dealers happy too. But not only do neither of them succeed, all of the good that they did resulted in the complete destruction of themselves and the organizations around them. And that's because the systems they operate in are so flawed that they completely erase all of the good and take them down with it. Stinger gets killed and the Barksdale organization falls, Colvin gets blamed and the dealers go back to the corners. Season 3 was amazing with these parallels and it's still my favorite season.
99.9 percent agree, but there is a link to season two here. Stringer having D killed (who also believed in reforming the trade) eventually brought their whole side down. The one time Stringer went hard fucked it all up for the Barksdale orginization.
People who have never watched this show for what ever reason missed out on some of the finest television & acting I have seen in a long long time. Man I still almost tear up watching the ending of season 3. Still probably the best drama that has been on television
+Bob Miter Nah, The Sopranos sold out by season 5 with all the blatant product placement and silly plots. I guess you can also say season 5 of The Wire was also kinda weak but The Wire is without doubt the best tv show ever made.
Loved that smile on mcnultys face returning to the beat, just walkin down the street being among his people in the city he loves, touching moment. He was “good police” and that was an important shot... a far cry from from what we have today.
One of television's most beautiful moments. A montage that finally expresses how hard it is to achieve anything, the sheer brutality of the struggle that is the endeavour to make the world more prosperous, happier, safer, or kinder. Major Colvin is my favourite character in the Wire.
Solomon Burke gave this song the "slow burn" treatment. His singing gets more intense and impassioned as it goes along, but it's a subtle progression. Then after the song reaches its peak, he takes us home by fading to a whisper. I bought this album, Don't Give Up On Me, as a new release in 2002 purely on the strength of reviews and because I knew and liked some of the songwriters who had contributed songs (Costello, Dylan, Waits, Lowe, etc.). I had never heard him. I quickly became a fan for life.
So many great scenes here. I particularly like McNulty in uniform working the West side beat like he's almost normal, the Frank Sobotka re-election posters, and Avom mouthing "Marlo?"
Wrong. In the previous shot he turns around and sees his sister , smiles ,thinks he is vindicated in his belief that "family and blood" is above everything. When he turns back a second time , his sister is gone but Marlo acknowledges him instead on the other side. Avon smiles not out of resignation (game over) but because he realises that he must tread the treacherous path of life alone ,family doesn't come along. Listen to the lyrics during these scenes ,they align with this interpretation perfectly !
Yeah my throat got tight when I first saw that. They hadn't really mentioned the docks the whole season so the poster hits you like a punch to the gut.
I was hooked on dope, heroin, for a long while. my brother od'd in 2014 on fetanyl... The Wire hits me so hard. living myself all my life in Baltimore too it's more relative. after every episodes end till now even it's just a silence as the end theme plays as your like "wow....." I'm tearing though now, best show ever. that's all...
@youtubeadsareretardedandga44 I know I'm 6 years behind with my comment but I hope you're doing well and staying clean. May 19th, 2023 will mark two years sober for me and ironically enough, it took me between 9 and 12 months to fully grasp the true meaning of "one day at a time" and even though I have come a long way from when I first started my journey to recovery, I HAVE to tell myself to breathe and take everything one step and one day at a time at least 20-30 times a day. One of the many reasons why The Wire is one of my top three favourite shows of ALL time as well as one of THE best shows in the history of television is because the show depicted the addicts as real people with real problems who, at the end of the day, wanted to get clean and change their lives for the better more than anything else in the world. Once again, I hope you're doing well and staying clean. Keep fighting the good fight.
Written by Van Morrison and sung by the late, great, Solomon Burke. As always, brilliant music to go with undeniably one of the best shows television has ever seen.
Idc what people say about S4, THIS was the best season for me. The fall of Avon and rise of Marlo, the relatable and thought provoking storyline of Hamsterdam, the clash between McNulty and Lester, the end of Stringer; S3 had everything. To me this was the peak of The Wire. Can’t wait to watch it again soon
@Randolph Worthington III Nooooo, just remembered the fate of Frank!! Such a nice guy, even if he did play a pedo in Devils Advocate and a rapist in 35mm
late to the party, just started watching the wire about a week ago, almost done with season 4 now. i've worked in several of the institutions examined by this show (e.g. corrections, substance use, education)...wow. the way that this show accurately portrays the helplessness/hopelessness that people like me encounter every day...i can't even put into words. i'm getting choked up IRL. greatest show ever - should be required viewing for all students at the collegiate level. thank you david simon.
That scene with Omar throwing his guns away made me tear, It like he puts on a face he tries to be the ubermensch making a code for himself, and trying to be above it. When he realizes in that scene all that he's under just a piece of coal that is to caught up to ever be a diamond.
Depends on what you're going for. Season 3 is definitely the "Avon Barksdale" season but it also ends with the transition to Season 4, which is a more depressing and bleak season. Season 4 is the "Marlo Stanfield" season and boy is it a dark one.
No matter how hard Marlo tried to be respected, to be talked about in the streets like Avon or Omar, or to be King. He still had to go through Avon to do certain things. That right there proves everything. The King stay the King - D'Angelo Barksdale.
I know Van Morrison wrote this song but damn if Solomon Burke doesn’t bring it home hard..World keeps turning, don’t stop for no one, ups and downs, highs and lows, you just keep on movin…we are truly all alone, but if you’re lucky, you can grab and hold on and live off those good moments and people in your life…till that fast train finally stops. It’s all over much too quickly. The game is the game.
Avon getting a glance at Marlo for the first time, and that in court, while already being defeated for now always gives me chills, and their little nods of "respect" from one king to another too...
What makes The Wire so good is it precisely depicts the good, the bad and the ugly in crime ridden communities and society at large. Without judging , just depicting it as it is.
So, no one picked up on the fact that Avon's sister was sitting on the Prosecutors side of the courtroom and how Marlo and Chris were dressed all in black as if they're at a funeral?
@@JSWang-ii8kd Avon isn't done tho. He gets 10-life, life meaning 15+ years. He could be out in 5 years or earlier with Levi being Levi and if Slim Charles doesn't get got in that time Avon would have a homie close to the greeks when being released.
@@zenmonk6456 Hope so! If we have to chose from Avon and other drug dealers like Marlo, I will pick Avon. But the game changed, Avon has to adapt, so maybe when he came out, he would play the game differently. Levi doesn't have to change, his battle ground remains the same.
@@zenmonk6456 wrong. He has to do the 5 years from his previous 7 year sentence. Then he possibly gets 10 to life. That “to life” part really means life.
I have recommended this show to countless people. Always with this caveat : "Even 6-7 episodes in, you will feel like nothing ever happens. Stick with it". In my opinion, it doesn't really get going until Kima is shot.
@@sashatt2842 this season was amazing no doubt. But I still give the edge to Season 4 because to me that was probably one of the greatest television seasons of all time.
I watched Season 3 all in one sitting so the story was fresh in my memory when everything wound down with this montage. As I watched it unfold, a wave of clarity rushed over me and the history of the human race flashed before my eyes. ...I thought it was somewhat memorable.
I love the scene at 4:10 when Marlo sits down in the court room and Avon mouths his name to ask if it's him. Marlo is pretty much responsible for everything: Stringer's death, the Barksdale organization crumbling, and Avon's incarceration, and Avon is just seeing him face to face for the very first time
How is marlo responsible for any of that? Stringers death is caused because he lied to Omar and tried to have him kill brother mouzone, mouzone reached out to Avon and told him what stringer did, so Avon let him have stringer. Avons incarceration was caused because Stringer snitched.
Factssss been looking for this comment seems like everyone be hating on Marlo and dick ride Avon and omar like Marlo’s wasn’t going too to toe with them
We must be watching two different shows, Omar is responsible for the downfall 😂😂😂😂 People make Marlo to be smarter than he actually was. Omar killed barksdale heavy hitter and already helped weaken the crew.
That's exactly what it is. He's conceding the crown to him in that very moment. And if you notice he doesn't even look pissed about it, just a look of resignation.
giedrius tautvydas The Wire had the best acting, writing, music, and cinematography of any show ever made for my money. Brilliant from start to finish.
Watching the series for the umpteenth time, I just saw another parallel. In this montage, Omar is throwing into the water the guns that he and Brother Mouzone used to kill Stringer. We hear a splash. In season 2, when Bodie (and Shamrock, I think) are tasked by Stringer with throwing some guns into the water, they accidentally throw them onto a boat instead. Stringer berates them and tells them they needed to wait for the splash.
Just finished season 3 and god damn I’m glad I started this show. Sad I’ll never see it again for the first time but grateful I got friends I can recommend it to so they can experience it for the first time too. What a show.
Best montage of all the seasons damn I can't believe I was 13 and watching one of the best shows ever made not to offend any sopranos fan but the wire is king in that type of program
It’s incredible. Seeing all the comments here from 10-12 years ago about how hard this scene hits. I’m watching (again) in 2023 and for some god forsaken reason this montage was never a thing to me. Now that I’m older, it hits SO hard. I haven’t lived a life close to anything this show depicts, yet I can relate to it so much.
What a brilliant show. The last couple episodes of this season were a fucking greek tragedy. I just finished The Wire a few days ago and already an yearning to start it all over again.
Yeah, seeing Bodie like a soldier with "no country" and Avon no longer "the king" so to speak were pretty heavy scenes in this montage. This is my favorite montage, but the season 4 montage was upbeat and looked like it was setting up season 5 to be a banger of a season.
Right! Yeah Marlo being at Avon's court hearing pissed me off the first time around, but the second viewing I realized it was a sign of respect. Best show ever, except maybe Breaking Bad.
Lol it's basically a joke on how fanboys of both shows say one is better than the other, Instead of appreciating how good and different they are from each other.
The court scene I still like. I read a comment where it says that Avon passing the crown to Marlo. Then I read another comment that on season 5, when they meet in jail, that’s Avon showing Marlo he’s still king. I love reading RU-vid comments on they analyze wire scenes.
You know this show is the truth because there isn't one dislike on here yet. That shit speaks volumes to how good/read/amzing this show was and is when re-watched and evaluated.
1:52 The child growing and laughing with joy, as children are programmed to do ... the mom crying, thinking of the let downs to come. Nothing but let downs ... at best.
