To me Avon was a good leader when he let Cutty turn to a civilian. If Cutty was working for Marlo and wanted to leave the streets. Marlo would have Cutty killed.
I thought Avon was a great leader. He not only had the uncanny ability to read/understand people, he places himself in a contingent situation to keep his operation afloat. Only thing that stopped Avon's peak was time. Great video brother man.🙏🏾🙏🏾💯
Probably a generation gap on my part but whether 70s or today he would be dead. He was afforded "privilege" during that time to be sloppy, and LIVE. He didn't know nothing! Not Marlo, D'Angelo, Stringer, Wallace, his lawyer, ect. What a joke he was. Always last to class. Everyone saw how he let Weebay rot, then left his men deserted and dead on the street. Nah. That connect was all he had. He had the Greeks! I would of crush that bASS with Persians💪🏾
Respect! He was a solid mentor to Slim Charles. I’m sure he was probably mentoring Slim Charles even more once Slim got in position being head of the co-op.
He was a decent leader but he failed in knowing his own people. He basically kept putting stringer down instead of giving him a win so he can fall in line better. Especially if he second in command
As someone who comes from the streets and made a lot of money in my neighborhood. I’ve been shot before and I really felt it when you said it’s hard to estimate how many ppl really dislike which is so fucking true. It’s always the ones you ain’t thinking about. Glad to see you back bro #Detroit
Find it crazy how Blackman brag about selling drugs to ppl in their neighborhood. To ppl that look just like us. Destroying your community is not something you should brag about. You should feel shame. I did also but only sold my stuff in white neighborhoods. Killing your own ppl smh
Avon had been peaked he was already the King of the Westside. Stringer ratted him out to the cop Bunny and his name was even on the paperwork... Avon was hustler but he was business to, and he also tried to warn Stringer about dealings with them uptown politicians like Clay Davis but Stringer wouldn't listen and he cross Avon for the good dope cuz Avon wouldn't let go of the corners Marlon was on. Stringer had already joined the Co Op with prop Joe, and Avon had brought the guns and was about to declare war on Marlo crew that's when they raided them Avon caught 5 more years because of his right hand man ( Stronger Bell) Traitor! That's why he ended up getting murked by Brother and Omar. Because Avon had let it slide about what happen to his nephew that was killed in prison.
@@patrickmacon9059 well actually Avon gave stringer up to prevent a war against new york which would be his end. Brother gave him a choice between giving up stringer bell or taking it up against new york. Thats why Avon said he had no choice giving up stringer and Avon didn’t even know about stringer snitching at that moment.
That’s why it’s good to read body language a twitch of sumbody eye says a lot. Reading people facial expression gives u insight into how sumbody really feel abt u.
Barksdale didn't just give up his best friend, though. Stringer Bell spun a web of lies in which he deceived even Barksdale namely by killing Barksdale's dear nephew. In addition to that, they no longer had the same outlook on their drug business. Throughout the beginning of the series we could see their friendship deteriorating for all these reasons. I would say they were no longer best friends evidenced by the fact that they were both trying to get rid of each other.
The way Avon confirmed that Stringer was trying to set him up was clever. Stringer was so organized and predictable. Avon used this against him. When Stringer couldn't remember his meeting time Avon confirmed what was going to happen.
What kind of leader didn't see and seperate himself from Snake Stringer. He wasn't a good anything. No code. Underestimated. No loyalty. He DID give him up. Let's not delude ones self. No need for that. He had a choice. He was scared to go to war. He also wanted him gone. Always needed someone to educate him on his "business". Family. Legal. Professional. It was a matter of time he ended up Willie Lloyd'd or Maserati'd. All he had was a connect. Like I said before, I would of spent my free time knowing Persians and anyone else who hated The Greek.
@@ButtersCCookie u make no sense my guy . Avon would lose the drug connection and Muscle connection from New York . Avon went to war w Marlo against stringer opinion . It was either set up Stringer or lose the connection at that moment wasn’t no war . Stringer already messed up too bad .
Great perspective I never looked at it that way you can actually see their friendship deteriorate as time goes on now that I look at it from your point of you
@@ButtersCCookie I always felt that the writers didn't do such a good job showing who Barksdale really was namely because they made the Stringer Bell character play such a big role in the series. It's really through the dialogue of other characters talking about Barksdale that the viewer can see how street smart and business savvy he really was.
I agree that had Stringer not gone astray that the Barksdale organization would have dealt effectively with Marlo & Co., as capable as Marlo was. Avon had a presence, on the street and in Jessup ("authority figure" - his accurate self-description). He was handicapped in S3 without the presence of Wee Bey, Bird, Stinkum, et. al., and by Stringer's wandering. But, that's what made this series so great.
You make a great point about Avon’s limited intel when he was locked up, and how his being slightly removed when he was out made him ignorant of the shit that Stringer was getting up to.
Avon was aware of the manipulation that Joe played Stringer against him in so many occasion. Avon had no choice but to give up his "friendship". Avon also seemed different towards String after admitting that he was part of d'Angelo's death. If I remember correctly, String asked Slim to kill The Clay Davies. That scene showed Avon has no trust for String whatsoever. - Great content as always, Thank you (Please post more often)
I've always thought the prison quote was about the feelings of regret (the day you go in) and anticipation (the day you get out.) The time in the middle is about acceptance. Regret and anticipation weighs heavier than acceptance. So it's like you're doing time when you experience those emotions. I think the reason why they always had two people volleying that expression is because you become a different man when you get out. You either become a better criminal or a reformed citizen. That's just my take on it.
I think it’s about preparing yourself mentally for the ordeal you’re about to go through and about keeping your wits about you so you can survive your sentence.
I really like how you broke down Avon killing Stringer and the wrong in it. Imo Avon biggest flaw was starting a war without the troops in the beginning. A good leader gotta listen sometimes see what Stringer got going on. Weebay was always who really kept the organization in sync that 3rd leaders importance can't be understated.
Yup if Avon would’ve put his pride aside he wouldn’t have backed String into a corner. Barksdale Org was starving but his pride wouldn’t see the bigger picture.
The point you made about understanding but not respecting Avon’s decision to give up Stringer was fire. I’m not debating with anybody that didn’t watch this video to see why. Good job brother 💯
Avon had to give string up.String got into the whole Brother Mouzone and Omar mess by doing fugaziness behind Avon’s back. Not only that he killed D’Angelo behind Avon’s back.Like brother mouzone said if Avon protected a known snake who went behind his back his word and reputation in the streets would be FINISHED and personally he wouldn’t be able to win a war against Marlo and brother mouzone
@@rouskeycarpel1436Respectfully you missed the point on this one. Avon didn’t have to give Stringer up. He could’ve easily made sure his brother died in a quick and honorable death (similar to Mouzone letting Omar kill his boyfriend) and did it himself instead of letting somebody else do what they want with him. I 100% get what he was saying in this video
@@TheRealLeonardWashington Avon had no choice but to give Stringer up. It was either that or lose his New York connect AND risk having to go to war with New York when he already had his hands full with Marlo, meaning that he would have to fight a war on two fronts, which would have been disastrous. Refusing to give up Stringer would have essential been suicide.
To your point about not giving up String, I get it. Can’t disagree at all. I feel like personally killing String would’ve been too much for Avon. There was still a lot of love there on both sides. I mean, he kept working with him after he got his nephew killed. They were family fr. Whether it was the right way to go or not…this one of those times I can say “I’m glad I ain’t gotta make that call” lol.
Thank you so much for putting your heart and soul into creating content for us The Wire fans! Nobody does it like you, so I really appreciate the effort you put in and I always love your commentary! You got me as a fan for life!
Avon was good as far as discipline and organization. However, where he failed was adaptability. He couldn’t change his way of thinking. There were “some” parts of Strings plan that he could’ve adapted to…such as moving above the streets and not be too rigid about getting corners. Also, following up with String and the rest of the organization
Unfortunately Avon was thinking too small. Him and String would really have made it up and out. Removed themselves from the streets and the gang. They were so close too but the streets called to Avon to the point he couldnt ignore it.
Yes and no. Oh man, that point you made about ‘not knowing how many ppl hate you’ that hits. Especially since in my younger and dumber days I was a slinger. I’ve been set up and the only thing that saved me from a beat down or worse, was intuition and timing. A lot of ppl watch the wire but have no clue how true to life it is due to them not knowing that street life. I’m not proud to claim ‘I’m from the streets’ I’m May be of them, but not from them. And there were the OG’s who saw me as something MORE than just another street dude. And they kept me away from them and then away from me. Great content bro! Best wire content on RU-vid!
One of my favorite RU-vid channels. Love seeing intellectual black men speak. I like how eloquently you put things into prospective when you’re breaking down this classic show logically.
Avon made himself clear on season 2 episode 12 "Yeah, you need to go to Prop Joe. I ain't gonna argue with you. You run it as you see fit. At least until I get home, you do." Stringer just couldn't let it go.
Been missing these gang I hope you realize you got a special gift and how much this shit means to ppl 💯 I know the numbers might not be a lot but keep going your time coming bro 💯
“Power can only be maintained through social interactions” along with those 3 principles are REAL LIFE gems bro. Ever since I started to approach life in a less emotional, more calculated way (Marlo) and more seriously (unlike Deangelo), keeping in mind the repercussions and picking the efficient options instead of the one’s feeding into guilty pleasures, I’ve found that my results in everything in life have been much more satisfying. I feel the difference in the way I’m moving and these videos keep me MENTALLY SHARP. I love this show and you’re a great speaker bro, truly helps me get my head together and help myself be a better man/version of myself. This may be your best video yet and for me it dropped at a perfect time. You’re doing your thing bro this is Top notch Content 💯
Your content has inspired me to watch this entire series… truly enjoy and appreciate your wisdom, street smarts, and perspective about this show and more importantly-human nature.
@@mikehunt3420 I placed the proverbial cart before the horse… I watched nearly every “A man’s world” analysis videos of the wire-which softened this 51 year old white guy’s eyes before watching the series… without his analysis-I would have missed so much upon first watching and likely even subsequent rewatches… especially with regards to the “long con” and people’s hidden agendas with regards to playing the long game… with watching these analysis videos-feel had a “cheat code” to see and appreciate nuances that gave me an even greater appreciation for the brilliance of this show…
@@kevinb2844 honestly the biggest thing this show reinforces for me is the idea of never ending movement. String dies and the show goes on for two more. D die, Avon goes to jail, Brodie hustles and Bubbles just does him so on and so forth. All that goes to show it doesn’t really matter what happens because the train (life) never stops. Avon went to jail and the show forgets about him for a lil but while Marlo takes over. I feel like that is a perfect reflection of the Wire but also life generally. The world is going to continue spinning regardless of who is on what corner or where the work comes from. It doesnt matter who controls the Towers or who is providing you the product. Because if that person is locked up or killed, someone else will just pop up on the scene. Sure none of these thoughts are revolutionary, they are street basics tbh. That said it applies to all aspects and to all walk of life. The world will still be spinning tomorrow regardless of any of our plans or ideas.
Glad you're back with the newness! One thing I just noticed while watching your video: when Stringer wanted to build a wall around Avon, that made me think of chess and the role of the Queen (which looks like part of a castle). The hoppers at the pit said to Dee that Stringer was like the Queen on the chessboard, and it fits with that quote regarding the building of the wall around Avon. In regards to Avon killing String himself because that was his close friend: I think that at that point in their arc, the friendship was pretty much as dead as Stringer would eventually be. Even though Avon was shown to want to be the one to pull the trigger when it came to Marlo, I honestly don't see him pulling the trigger himself. I think if he had done it, he would've hired someone from DC or elsewhere to do it (in a bit of poetic justice as that's how Dee died). I think that Stringer had done way too much to even be considered at the least an associate at that point. He played way too many away games and lost his home team crowd.
Great to see you back big homie 🔥 I believe Avon was a good leader because he truly incarnated stability as he had the charisma to manage both violence and the streets - which are some of the qualities you touched on at the beginning. However, when change started occurring the homicides, investigations, indictments etc. Avon didn't take the time sit back and reassess how quick things were taking shape. He was so in love with playing the game that he didn't get to re-examine events he could've certainly avoided the downfall of his organisation.
WHOOOOOOO!! just finished season 3, and on ep4 of season 4. i love the kids and their story arcs. season 2 is slept on! the last half of that season is wild! we missed you mane. we need a good video on lester freamon! happy thanxgiving from wv.
I considered myself well-versed and knowledgeable about the Wire as a series until I started watching your video breakdown and perspective. This was another great dissection of one of my favorite characters on the show. My only disagreement with your video is that you thought it was a mistake that he set Stringer up. At the end of the day, it was business. I believe he made the correct decision.
Great analysis as always. I agree it was completely out of character for Avon to let Stringer be killed by Omar and brother Mouzone considering the "personal" nature of their relationship. The fact he didn't seek retribution for Stringer killing his nephew or subverting his leadership is confusing when you consider how violent he could be with those he had no love for. That said, Stringer knew Avon's biggest weakness was the "friends and family" environment he valued in his organization so it's not a total surprise he couldn't pull the trigger himself. It's amazing when you see the dichotomy between he and Stringer - who had no problem sending Poot and Bodie to kill one of their best friends - play out in that epic scene "I knew you couldn't do it, but there go a life that had to be snatched Avon".
the one thing I’ll say in Avon defense of the stringer decision Stringer put the business over family(Avon blood family) and it wasn’t his right/call. Avon chose to hold that just cause he knew ultimately stringer was right from a “business” view. You can’t take the weight off Avon by calling the shot yourself fool. It’s his organization, play your part. Avon felt that weight though, to then turn around and go to war for him putting more people in immediate danger… Stringer was his weakness. His trust in him “You don’t expect me to put my people up against Brother shittttttt, That ********* got more bodies than a Chinese cemetery”
Avon is my favorite character on the show. His character makes for a great case study on leadership! PS like you rightfully said if Stringer was not distracted Avon & Stringer would’ve buried Marlo & Chris.
Yes your back ! And with a brilliantly done piece of work , im glad it’s not just me that thinks the wire is an amazing show. Much respect for your work from the the UK 🇬🇧 🇺🇸
Bro you are intelligent as fuck with these analysis of the characters. Top-notch commentary, juxtaposition and analogies. And you from Philly… makes me proud lol. A street nigga with intelligence
Happy Thanksgiving 🍁🦃🍽 to You My Brother!!!I gotta agree with you that if Avon and Stringer would’ve STAYED SOLID with each other then they really would’ve gave Marlo HELL!!!!!
Been waiting for another one. A lot of clones been posting, trying to do what you do but they're clearly nothing but D'Angelo's at it. Lol My man please do one on the most layered, complex and best acted characters in the series (to me anyway) Frank Sabotka. A tragic figure to say the least
Even if your best friend killed your family behind your back? Avon preached one thing above all when we 1st met him. “Family” over everything. String messed that up
No he had to go for sure. It’s not the death that I’m against. It’s Just giving him up to someone else rubs me wrong. Idk what they’re going to do to him. U feel me?
Love the videos Brotha! Ya intelligence is thru the roof. Love the educational bits that you put out. Defining propaganda and explaining how it relates to real life.
When the wire came out in 2001 it lowkey killed regular black mainstream tv shows era like the Parker’s, family matters, in the house, hangin wit mr.cooper, moesha, and Wayne bros…nobody wanted to see watered down shows anymore we wanted raw and uncut black tv shows…that’s why The Wire and reality tv shows like flavor of love took over the 2000’s.lol
Amazing video man ! I have a relative back in Hungary 🇭🇺 he has hundreds of antlers decorating his house, he’s apparently an influential person in the area… Love the history element to this video ! love the wire and love history ! I know it’s been said a million times but man this show was so well written.
Nah its definitely 2 days because in between 5 years dont really matter for nothing until the day you get out it's even on the paper work date in custody and release date so the statement definitely hold true. And yooo im glad you brought that brother Mozone scene up he definitely was about to kill Avon that "done" statement had little to no effect to connections. Omar told us your boy gave you up and we ain't even have to torture his ass neither.... Look at his posture he wasnt playing 13:41 watch how his hands drop and how avon look at him he did the same thing with Cheese pulled out the burner from a calm state
the background music gets me everytime. I definitely see where your coming from on alot of points too. always did feel like him throwing string his beeper did kinda feel like he was giving up his power (especially watching after the fact years later). u almost have to give credit to strong too, because he played all of it soo very well
If you taking any suggestions, I'd like to hear your pros & cons on the co-op, I'm sure that would be at the least a part 1 & 2 if not a many series lol..
“The best thing I can do for my friend, is kill him myself” I finished that line while u were saying it. Lol. It’s was the only way to deal with that problem with honor and a true test of a real leader. Can u kill a loved one. My mind didn’t even allow me to think that was a solution.
Barksdale never looked at him the same after string told him what he did to D! I mean he understood why he did it, but he knew he could never fully trust him as he once did again! String was jus to sneaky an barksdale knew it! 🤦🏿
When I was in 9th grade the first season of the wire aired on tv 📺 and I loved it but I just viewed it as another cool hood movie like boyz n the hood, paid in full, or menace to society..but when when I got in my 30’s and watched it again I see it like reading Shakespeare or something it’s hella deep.
