THOSE ARE NOT KNEES! Soon after posting this movie, I learned that what we think of as knees (on birds, cats, and who knows what else) are actually ankles. The heron's knees are hidden in its plumage. Please click 'LIKE' if you appreciate the movie. Music for the movie is "That's What It Takes" by NEFFEX.

You've done it again, Jo. Wonderful, gorgeous footage and your delightful narration. More please!

Thank you, Laurie, for that generous compliment. Those herons are such fun to watch and film. In fact, in reference to "more please", I'll let you know that two more heron films are in the works. Their necks are even more fascinating than their legs and feet. That one will probably be up four weeks from today.

You have the gift of exploring and exposing the amazing talents of animals and that is a rare and precious function. I always chuckle when the Great Blue Herons, so plentiful hereabouts, are disturbed by my kayak. They always utter some distinct, guttural invective as they storm off. On occasion, they chose to decorate my craft and/or person with some ballast. Thank your Dear Jo.
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME 10 месяцев назад
Yes, I've heard those guttural invectives. Funny thing for those hoarse complaints to be paired with such deliberate, elegant wingbeats. I always enjoy tinkering with every script until it suits me. I've got a movie about heron necks already roughed out (decent script with footage matched to it). But it always surprises me to see how many improvements I can still make after a video is supposedly done. I'm like a dog with a bone about it. It's nice to hear from someone who appreciates the herons as well as my efforts to show them off.

I'll testify that it's possible to watch them all day--because I pretty much did that in filming for this vid. And I tentatively plan to do two more about them, one of them about their amazing necks and another about the differences in their hunting styles.

such a timely video! i wanted to share a funny bird moment with you. On one of my walks, i spied a young female house sparrow unable to fly but so close! Her father, was attentive and nearby, but i know cats lurk in that neighborhood. After watching for several minutes i decided i should keep her safe for the day or two she needs to fly. (i call boy sparrows Charles. and females Sally) As soon as i started to go near the young Sally, who almost got run over by a car, Charles the father started going nuts chirping. He landed on the sidewalk near me and kept sqwaking. i couldn't believe what happened next. Suddenly, 3 other Charles' dropped in behind him like super heroes. Their expressions read along the lines of "Whats going on? Who do i need to fight!?" I wished Charles good luck and went home, laughing the whole way because i just got stopped by the sparrow mafia. 😂

Yeah, those herons, they are remarkable birds. So stay tuned, Joanne. I've got two more movies about them coming up. I might do a short one about hummingbirds on Cardinal flowers in September, but I'm already at work on a video about heron necks.

Hi, Audra. And thanks. I immerse myself in every film I make, and doing so it was such a pleasure with this one. No matter how many times I watched that egret stroll up onto a hiphigh boulder or that little blue heron grip rocks, I continued to find it mesmerizing.

Great footage and information as always. We have Great Blue Herons, Green Herons, and American Bitterns here where I live. I find most of them to be fairly skittish at most locations. Getting footage like that would be a challenge, a fun challenge though.
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME 10 месяцев назад
Thanks, Jeff. Most birds are pretty skittish, as far as that goes, but I filmed some of this at locations where the herons had to put up with lots of human traffic, so that they were fairly tolerant. Even so, it’s not a game for an impatient person. You’re right about that.

I never knew their talons worked that way! Especially on jagged surfaces and on only one foot. I think flamingos do the same thing if I remember correctly. Yes? No?

@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME 10 месяцев назад
Nor did I really understand how their legs and feet worked until I researched for this movie. That’s what I like about this hobby, that I’m always learning. As for flamingos, I don’t know. I’ve had next to no chance to observe them. You could always Google it.

I am in Northern AZ.. 4 beautifulseasons. We have the Giant Blue Herons.. when you showed feet, they are so pre-historic.. Graceful when taking flight and not a sound,, They come from the big pines around the small lake and swoop down for their catch...it seems they dont move much of their body doing that either. They are graceful or have amazing flexibility ? When they take flight from a standing position , are they pushing off with those incredible strong feet n do those lanky legs have all the power ? They are beautiful and I will do research on my questions. Great videos with narration that is so wonderfully put together !

Yeah, I wouldn't have considered it as a topic until I watched that Great Egret glide onto a hip high boulder andsaw one preen itself all over while standing on one leg. I was simply gobsmacked. Oh, and, two days after I posted this, I learned that those knees aren't knees at all. They're ankles. The knees are hidden in plumage. Wish I'd known. I hate putting up incorrect info. This coming Friday I'll publish a video about their kinky necks. Does that sound interesting? Maybe not, but it is.
