The Woodpecker Ep 135 - Wooden bandsaw part 1

I wanted a bigger bandsaw for a while now. So I decided to build my own with Matthias Wandel's bandsaw plans from woodgears.ca. In several episodes, I'm going to show the built step by step. In this particular episode, I'm starting to work on both wheels and cut all the wood I need for the frame.

Thumbs up for showing the CAD model location of each piece as you made them. That had to be a lot of work. Your videos have great production quality. I watched the whole thing even though I won't be building a bandsaw. Also, props for supporting Matthias. You are both great for the maker community. Thanks again.

Yes the 3d animations added a lot of post production time, but I figured it would be easier to understand. This bandsaw have a lot of pieces...

Not true, I am sure the shop build was longer than this will be, and that is my favorite series of builds on RU-vid. Probably a mixture of jealousy, love of timberframing, love of woodworking, and the great story telling. You can count me as one that will not be bored!

Hi Alain, Another enjoyable video, I only wish that the cost of wood here in the U.K. was as cheap as it is over there so that projects like this were more economically viable. Can't wait for the next episode, and as always please keep up the great work. Regards Steve

Alain Vaillancourt Yeah. I already had mine finished, and it works well. It was the 16" Bandsaw he made, but it is pretty much exactly the same design wise as the 20". But I had so much trouble with wheel alignment problems that I nearly gave up. It took me a long time to figure out a good method on getting them perfect, but I could have done it in a matter of minutes if I saw these videos. I'm glad your doing this step by step process! It will definitely check out the videos when I start building my 20" Bandsaw.

For the love of dog man! Clamp those blocks of wood when you use a hole cutter in the drill press. I lost the end of my thumb from the nail to the tip when the cutter bit into the work piece and my hand went with it. It happens so fast and most ofyen when you've gotten comfortable and over confident with your tools.

You're so right, sometime we don't think when we do things like that. Thank you I have the same reaction, but on something else, when people use a grinder in their wood shop, after using mine I've once set fire to the dust of my bandsaw which was 15' away. I also always leave a comment on the danger of doing this also. Thank you, I will be more vigilent in the future.

Wait a second... the frame is supposed to be made of pine panels from the garbage! This solid maple is not how you build a Matthias project! :-) Yours is probably going to weigh a bit more!

In the end it's heavier than my metal one. But works much better. But no pine in this bandsaw, sory to disapoint ;)

@ldwithrow08
@ldwithrow08 7 лет назад
I just bought Mattias' 20 inch bandsaw plans. Mattias was trying to demonstrate a concept: that you can build a really good machine out of cheap materials. He succeeds beyond anybody's expectations. But that doesn't mean you have to be a "wood purist" to build one. One of the reasons to build your own is to build it your way. For instance, I'm expanding to 24" wheels and stretching the arms and spine accordingly, adding two more layers to the C frame and making the lower hub out of metal so I can use a live axle and mount the drive pulley on the back. Still indebted to Mattias for the ideas and the engineering but doing it my way. I wish I could afford hardwood for the frame.

Great video. It seems like everyone cuts rough circles with a bandsaw and sands them. Why not use a router and circle jig?
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 7 лет назад
Since I'm going to turn this round anyway, why bother tryiong to make it real round. It has to be dead center with the bearing and the only way to be sure is to turn it.

congratulations! please, what characteristics should the band saw motor have? hp? laps? how many speeds? thank you
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 6 лет назад
Hi, I've installed a 2HP 220V motor. I only have one speed. But I'm not really sure of the actual speed. The motor turn at 1550rpm on it I've installed a 5" pulley and on the other side, the side of the saw it's a 16 or 17" wooden pulley I'm not sure 100% on the saw side, but it's in the plans.

@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker

By turning them on their actual shats, I was sure it.s all centered. I could had make a nice circle, but after gluing the flanges with the bearings I would still had to turn it anyway.
@terrysmith1310
@terrysmith1310 5 лет назад
hello alain terry from uk here just wondering how much heavier the maple is from pine that you used. I have a lot of white oak floorboards and wondered if the maple was the heavy sort you used and that's why is weighed 70 to 80 pounds
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 5 лет назад
Maple is heavy as iron.. Ok they're a bit of exaggeration here. but it's 2 to 3 time heavier than pine. Oak is lighter than maple I don't know from how much but it's easily noticeable. but If I had oak on hand I would have used it that's for sure

I will never understand why do you make woodworking machines from wood... I mean bandsaw, jointer or this kind of complicated woodworking machines. Furthermore you have original factory one, and it won't be as good as from metal.
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 7 лет назад
In fact since it's heavier than my metal one it's working beter than mine. Maybe if I had a $3000 bandsaw it would be beter but it's not the case so it's working beter, and on top it's fun to make :)
@petersalanczi
@petersalanczi 7 лет назад
Well, you can buy used one, for example I've bought my 400 mm bandsaw 40000 HUF which is about 140 $. That was great business, the average cost is about 140-180000 HUF for this kind of bandsaw in Hungary. Not just heavier but more stable and more precise... But that is really fun to build one, that is true, so I looking forward to see your next episodes :)
