In the second part of my wooden bandsaw build, I manage to finish the frame and both wheels.
If you want the plans of this bandsaw go at woodgears.ca

Great work Alain, you have contributed a lot in sharing the details of its construction, it helps a lot the people who bought the plans of Mathias Wandel

I guess that's one downside of using hardwood for the frame - it's a lot more work to clean it up! I could hand plane mine pretty easily.

Your doing a great job! Much better than I could do! Thanks for showing us how and all the mistakes. I think I'll use a circle cutting jig for the wheels and pulleys "if" I ever finally build one. And if I do it will definitely be one from Matthias's plans and videos!
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 7 лет назад
The thing is that even with a circle jig they're no assurance the bearings will be 100% dead center on the wheels, so you'll have to turn them anyway.
@MRrwmac
@MRrwmac 7 лет назад
Alain Vaillancourt Unless you use the bearing as your center point on the jig. Even then, it would be necessary to fine tune it as you did. I still think your doing a great job! Maybe someday I'll get off my behind and do it.

great job so far, fun watching you build this .i myself would nor could i ever do this job MAIN reason i can't afford all those clamps I'm lucky to have 3 or 4 i do have & done are long enough when i need them. thanks for sharing
@rickrudd

Funny - these vids make me realize I need like 10 more pipe clamps. The last ones I got super cheap on ebay (supply your own pipe, so they're as long as you need). What I thought first and foremost was how expensive hard Maple is where I live. The optimal situation is to be buddies with someone who owns a mill.
@couragewoodworks2843
@couragewoodworks2843 4 года назад
Just go to harbor freight and you can get pretty good quality clamps for only a couple of bucks. A great option if you need a lot for cheap. Also they all come with a lifetime warranty so you pay 3 bucks for a clamp and have it for life. A 6 inch clamp at harbor freight is 2.99 but literally the exact same brand on amazon is 15.99. Just shows you how high companies raise prices compared to how much they cost to make.

Your build is impressive and makes me wanting to do my own bandsaw for the shop. All of the ones I found for 800 USD here in Croatia are of bad quality, where the good ones cost upwards of 1500USD. This is way too much money for me to spend so I think I'll go with Matthias' one.

At the end of my last part I say how this weight and how much it cost me, so you'll be able to make your own mind if this worth all the trouble.

I bet that even if it cost 1000 USD it is much better than any sold here in that price range!

Hey, you could have gone off the first wheel and used a pattern bit on the second wheel instead of turning it. Also you could have run the farm over the jointer instead of hand planing, no?
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 7 лет назад
The problem with a pattern bit is that doesn't mean that the center bearings will be dead center after gluing them so I would still have to re-turn it anyway. After gluing a couple of maple board together this becomes too heavy and awkward to manipulate around.

You may want to consider using a router and trammel next time you need so many circles cut from plywood.

Pour la colle a bois, tu devrais aller te chercher des brosses en silicone au dollarama (section cuisine). Tu peux laisser secher la colle dessus et ca s'enleve tres facilement par apres. Ca fonctionne mieux aussi!

How do you get time for this? Do you work in office time or shift? I wonder on these questions, because on this 13 minutes you show us more then 1 week's story.. :D
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 7 лет назад
I wouln't say shift, but I always work evenings. My days off are all over the place so I almost never have a weekend off. It's the reason why I only post an episode every 2 weeks even if I have 10 finished and redy to be publish. I rather have snow in summer than one month without anything and stress over this.

The downside of cuting circles with a jog saw is inaccuracy much better to cut with a router or a table saw I prefer the table saw with large circles but a router will work just fine you can look up how to do the table saw cut on RU-vid
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 2 года назад
I never cut a circle on the table saw, but I saw it done on line. Like you said, when I want a nice circle I use a router. But for this I had to carve a crown and have a particular size, the jig saw saw fast, but less than accurate I can't argue with that.

I am liking the look of the maple. Now that you have been through all this, is there any changes you would suggest or things you would have done differently? I am probably jumping the gun for your wrap up video. Beautiful work Alain.

If you are going to use that flycutter to make big holes on your drill press you need to find some better way of holding the work down. If that thing grabs it can tear a finger off.

Hello Alain, I'am Daniele from Italy. I ask you an information: what power (you are 120V?)and how many laps a minute has the engine you used? Thank you
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 7 лет назад
For the turning I was using a ¼HP(110Volts) motor, but my final saw has a 2HP motor which run on 220V

would particle board or OSB work for the frame ? plywood is very expensive and almost impossible to find around here, same for hardwood
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 7 лет назад
Not for the frame. The frame has to be in solid wood, Matthias made his with pine, I wanted maple so it would be even more stiff. This is because the frame has to be very rigid and plywood or particle board are not. But for the wheels MAtthias says that OSB is OK but not for the flanges, the bearing put too much preasure on the wood that they might break or chiped over time.
@JoeGP
@JoeGP 7 лет назад
thanks for the reply, pine is a softwood, right ? i can get that, if not i guess i'll make it out of metal then, or is cast metal the only thing rigid enough for the frame ?
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 7 лет назад
Yes pine is a soft wood. Metal would be fine, but this might cost more than wood. You still have to have a big piece of metal if you don't want it to bend under the blade pressure.
@JoeGP
@JoeGP 7 лет назад
well if softwood works then that's all i need to know, the only way to get hardwood that i know of around here is from used pallets, that's too much work, and i don't have a planer, jointer, drum sander etc. Also i might be able to find the metal i need in a scrapyard, at around $2 CAD/Kg it shouldn't be too expensive.
@JoshuaJonah

Why don't You cut wheels by router, end than finish on lathe?
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 7 лет назад
It was easier to cut with a jigsaw, and I needed to turn it anyway to get the bearings dead center.

I can't say exactly, but at least 40 years, I always used it when I was young but since I didn't play with it before being a teenager I can,t be sure of the exact year but at least 40.
@andrewconnolly6145

Alain Vaillancourt I've also been having trouble finding a place that sells Baltic birch plywood, where did you get yours?
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 7 лет назад
I'm lucky, my local hardwood supplyer have a lot in stock. 4x8 sheets and 5x5. I buy 5x5 it cost less by the square foot. But before I was buying them in a big woodworking store in Montreal but it's far and more expensive, that's the trouble with big store they have more employees so everything cost more.
