Beautiful doors. But that's not a workshop. It's a castle with tools in it. Absolutely gorgeous. As usual I love your videos.

wordsnwood Yes this is the lake in fron of my cottage. I went there 3 weekends ago, and I'm going again tomorrow :))) Finishing a project in winter is very long for me, I do a lot of snowmobiling.It's hard to imagine that last year at this time, I was making sawhorses and a year later I have this. :)
@Wordsnwood
@Wordsnwood 9 лет назад
***** It is a beautiful view. Have fun! The snow doesn't even look that deep. I don't think you ever mentioned how well insulated the cottage was way back in your "cottage tour" video. But with a wood stove and the -20 temperatures we've been having I bet it was chilly.
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 9 лет назад
wordsnwood My cottage is not very well insulated, so when we arrived it was -20 inside and in 5 hours we managed to bring it up to 10. Butt the -30 during the night brought the temperature inside to -1 when we woke up the next day.

What did you do about the broken screw? leave it? core around it to get it out? Also, when fitting doors (about one or two a year in a heavy year...), I usually leave the hinges screwed on and pull the pins. Less likely to mess up the fit that way.
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 9 лет назад
john john I left the broken screw inside the door and put a small 1" screw in the hole. It doesn't hold much but at least it doesn't show up.I always have problem alignining hinges together and adding the pin. The doors are too heavy to mess around and try to make the hinges align. It was easyer just to screw them with the hinges all assembled.
@deleetmeeh
@deleetmeeh 9 лет назад
***** Yea heavy doors are a beast to align especially if the hinges aren't exactly lined up. I'm a floor guy so every job I'm taking and putting back on doors. On commercial jobs the doors can be heavy, they make a special door jack with wheels to hold in place while putting on and off. Great job and thanks for sharing, I'm going to be doing a building like this soon except mine is also going to be livable in the loft and shop/business down below.

They look beautiful Alain. Out of curiosity, how come you used epoxy instead of regular wood glue for the dominos?
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 9 лет назад
Regular wood glue (I only have Tite Bond III) sets in 10 minutes, not enough time to spread the glue, put the dominos, spread glue on the mating piece, joint every thing, ect... So instead I use slow set epoxy, this epoxy sets in 90 minutes, so I can glue, film and don't stress during the glue up. But I must leave that curing for a longer time, that the only daw back.
@jonathaningram7529
@jonathaningram7529 7 лет назад
Thanks for this Alain - if the entire door is going to be sealed/primed/undercoated and then painted, would it be possible to paint the entire raised panel before installing, and then gluing it in place? I am going to paint my doors and wondered if sealing the raised panels before installing them would make them resistant to the seasonal changes and thus not require any room for expansion.
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 7 лет назад
If you paint your door, then paint the raised panels before, so if they schrink the bare wood won't show. For myself if they schrink then I'll just see exposed wood without varnish.
@jonathaningram7529
@jonathaningram7529 7 лет назад
Thanks. I was meaning more that if I were to paint the ends of the raised panels as well, would that stop them from expanding/contracting with the change of season (because they are sealed completely from the outside air), and if that were the case, then I could glue them in place so they don't move at all.
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 7 лет назад
Not really, the paint will block a little moisture but not enough to stop the wood movement, but being pre-paint, if they move, then you won't see it as much.

@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 9 лет назад
***** Yes most of the time. I know metric is simpler, we switch in metric in the 70' here in Canada, but since we're so close to the U.S. and they still use imperial units all our lumber and construction related stuff are still in imperial, we're used to deal with both measurement.

How come you use epoxy and not wood glue or construction adhesive?
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 8 лет назад
I use wood glue when I know that my glue up will take less than 5 minutes; this means most of the time. I use epoxy glue when I need a lot of time to assemble what I'm glueing, like a door for example. I'll use construction adhesive if I have, what I call sloppy joint, you know joints that are not perfect, so construction glue will fill the gap, or if I really don't want glue to drip everywhere, constructin adhesive is so thick that usualy it doesn't drip.

+Loszmi Only if it's a complicated glueup. Since I knew that gluing my doors would take more than 10 minutes, (the worktime of Titebond III) I used slow set epoxy, which give me something like 30-40 minutes of working time before the glue set.

+Alain Vaillancourt I understand! I've got problems last week with to fast glue, when I build safe gate for my daughter. But there many wood glues with long gluing time ;-)

+Loszmi Yes but I love using epoxy, it can be thicken, dye, or just used as is, in it's liquid form.

Charlie Griffin My next project is... Just a chair repair, it was taking space in my shop.But after I have several shop projects, I have not yet any means of storing my tools, so I'll make some shelves and a mitre station cabinet. But I'm not working fast so I'm not sure when this will be ready :(

I assume your wife has a 4 carrot ring after you finished the shop. I am pretty sure for her work, that works out to less than minimum wage :)

***** After spending that much money into my shop, we're broke. So the only thing I can give her is a wooden medal.
