I take a step behind the iconic green door of the Gateways club, an infamous setting in my 'Let's Get Dressed' series and London's most iconic lesbian bar.
A wonderful bit of history regarding the gay/ lesbian culture of the 1940s through the present time. Here in the states back in 1956 there was a popular song called, "The Green Door". I wonder if the Gateway Club ever had this song on their repertoire. For Evelyn and Betty, I hope that these places gave them joy, peace and comfort.
Ther's a piano and they play it hot behind the green door! Midnight what's that secret your keeping behind the green door! As a kid I loved that song!!
Very nice video. I wonder if they had to say if they were femme or butch and “act accordingly”, did that mean that femmes could not dance with femmes, or butches with butches?
